Thank you for this video! I just got my bachelors a year ago and after a year working, I really am considering getting an MBA. I want to get some more experience and really make my goals public so I can get some support. I feel like I have natural leadership qualities, but I want to learn more about how to apply that to a business field. Loved your insight on networking and the pros and cons of in-person business school vs online. Again great video! Cheers!

Thanks for the tips Ryan, I'm planning on doing a part-time MBA while working full time since work wants to pay for it. The programs I'm applying to aren't really prestigious but they are big state schools with over 100k (one with over 200k) alumni networks which is one big reason and another reason is to pivot internally with my company to a higher salary position.

I’m split between pursuing Law School or the MBA. I’m leaning towards the MBA because it’s much less demanding in terms of requirements, it’s far more affordable, and it’s attainable in half the time. Plus, there is no after-test like the bar to prepare for, and it’s applicable to anywhere in the US, whereas as an attorney you are restricted to the states in which you’ve passed the bar. The main question is this though: What kind of jobs is the MBA applicable to that you couldn’t get or would be much harder to get into with just a bachelor’s? The MBA sounds great as an opportunity to advance to another level and to network, but it also feels too broad to really be worth anything. I think the following joke could probably get the point across of what my concern is: “That’s great that you know how to handle PowerPoint, but we really need a brain surgeon”

Thanks for sharing your insights on pursuing an MBA and tips on how to maximize it. I'm in my mid 30's and dabbling between pursuing an MBA or a MS and found this helpful. I'm looking to study in Europe or Australia, mostly for the life experience and immersing myself in a different culture/paradigm, but also in hopes of securing a job afterwards to live abroad for a few years. I believe AACSB is regarded as the top MBA accreditation in the US. The MBA programs that I was interested in abroad are IACBE, not AACSB. I was wondering how much weight the type of accreditation has post grad/job search, and if hiring managers actually care about it? Though my goal is to work abroad, I'd like the MBA to still hold value if I were to look for work in the US. Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for making this video man. I think I'm pretty set on getting my MBA, but I have a huge caveat that I want to get your opinion on. I'm one of the people who can't really justify getting an MBA. I plan on moving states after I finish up college. I'm going in-state to save money, but my states finance sector is nonexistent so I gotta move. I don't want to doxx myself but it's basically a bottom 5 state by every measurement, so even ignoring work opportunities, I still want to leave. What this means is that while my college is #1 for the state I'm in, it's not relevant nationwide. And where ever I move to, I won't have any connections or networks. What is your advice on getting around this big weakness, if you have any? I could move states and get my MBA there, but I'd REALLY like to avoid out-of-state tuition. I'm a penny pincher like that. I want to get my MBA just to get that edge up on the competition and to be honest, just because I love the field of study so much. Thank you for getting around to this if you do.

What are your feelings about STEM to MBA? University of Alabama has a program where you can get your Engineering degree and MBA in 5 years.
@pranavpillai7778
@pranavpillai7778 2 жыл бұрын
I think that STEM to MBA is usually unnecessary because people with degrees in tech, engineering, and math get good jobs with good pay easily. Science not so much. I think that it can be a good options if you want to switch careers. All depends on your goals. A degree is a piece of paper with an ultimate destinantion.

@dentakleen5204

The biggest mistake people make when doing an MBA is they do it to run a company. Most MBA programs are meant to get you a higher paying position than what you came in with. They are not meant to instantly get you a top paying position. I ended up getting a position that paid 50% more than what I previously was making but Im not an executive nor did I expect to be one. But most people in those programs expect the 100 to 200k salary shortly after completing the program (realistically, it would take at least 8 years after graduation to make that kind of money-in some cases 15 to 20 years).

What role did you get that wasn't executive with an MBA but still gave you a 50% salary increase? Was it manager at least? Or were you in investment banking?

I have the same story as your into. I was on campus for two weeks withdrew immediately because I found an online option that was 60% less while curriculum and ranking for the online program was slightly better still both great schools. First two weeks networking was okay but I found myself networking better online through linkedin reaching out to alumni. Also networking is everywhere. As an online student you can study on campus if you have a nearby business school. Lastly, opportunity cost. Online route you can work and live anywhere increasing your income for 12-24 months increasing your quality of life and networking while working is also a huge opportunity and to me I perform better studying online without outside distractions and professors spending half the class talking about their dog and forgetting what chapter we are on but providing that standardized test.

Great video and good advice, I have a few questions tho. I'm 28 going to college for the first time (I'm almost done with year 1) I have a 3.8gpa. If you don't get a STEM degree it seems like you won't get a job easily. Tons of people make low low 30-50k jobs with a MBA or business degree. Maybe irs over abundant and rendered useless now? Second, I want to work on wallstreet as a analyst or trader. What can I do to pursue that? Is finance or MBA or economics reasonable? Can I give to a ivy league school?
@JackDaniels-ee1fo
@JackDaniels-ee1fo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Josh, in my personal experience and observation, it would seem like the only business degree that is actually in high demand within the job market would be accounting. To work as an analyst or trader is seemingly extremely hard to get into without someone in your network to pull you in. Especially for Wall Street. Also, you might need to take the series 7 exam. I love economics, but it’s useless for finding a job unless you go all the way to PhD and become a professor. It just helps improve your perspective and understanding of how the world works, but it doesn’t give you any particular skill. The MBA also seems to suffer from this. My advice regardless of what you decide, if you would like to stick with looking for an employment opportunity in business, would be to pursue a job in a new venture. I heard they tend to be more flexible with their standards, and you can use the experience to try to eventually jump into a better firm, or choose to stay and grow with the new venture. I would also recommend looking for a place to volunteer in teaching about whatever major or career you want to get into, in order to develop some experience for your resume. Good luck!

Thanks Ryan for creating this video. I am wondering If I can get your thoughts on this: - I have been working for over 10 years and have been feeling stuck in my career. - During coffee chats, I was suggested to consider MBA or MS Computer Science (I don't have an undergrad in CS but saw there are some bridging programs out there for those who don't). Wondering what do you think about MBA vs MS Computer Science? - I think MS if usually for those who usually have around 2 years of work experience but may not be appropriate for those with more work experience. - I think with MS CS one tends to become a software developer writing code. Pays well but just writing code. - With MBA people usually tend to go into 3 buckets (consulting, IB/financial services & tech). My perception is that the work life balance of consulting/financial services isn't great and also getting there in mid 30s is tough but tech (product management seems to be the most popular role in tech post MBA, though the current tech economy isn't great with layoffs) seems more open with better work life balance. Would love to get your thoughts.
