Interesting. I learned about the Max Hoffman connection as there is little info on the early history of US sales. A few comments on the video. Those bumpers we have were mandated 5 mph bumpers. They are not only bigger, they are made out of aluminum alloy and have shocks installed to absorb small impacts where as the "euro" bumpers are bolted directly to the car. Very desirable car however few understand how to care for one of them, they require a large amount of servicing and hard to educate mechanics about it, you repair them not replace parts. You adjust or lubricate stuff constantly before it fails. They last and last but the upkeep is considerable. To bring one for servicing at modern shop rates is very expensive, it is not just oil changes but lubrication, valve adjustments, injector calibration, lots of specs to check and adjustments to do, To bring one back from the dead is a huge amount of labor, not just bodywork but getting all the systems working is a big undertaking. Also, when highlighting a vehicle like this you should find a nice example that is not missing a bunch of parts and so worn. There are very well cared for examples around that are correct in every respect and not a mix of parts from different areas of the world. Yes, they are referred to as "euro" parts, however in truth they are rest of the world parts as only North America got the bumpers and lights and certain options. Easy to sell these cars? Hardly, they sit for sale on various sites for long lengths of time. They are not valuable unless at the highest degree of restored condition or completely unmolested original low miles examples. Few are nice, these were work horse cars. Please when featuring cars demonstrate it running, show the powertrain, highlight what makes them desirable. Use the turn signal stalk and show how it cancels and feels, turn the headlight knob, use climate control (set it and forget it, the first of its kind really). Open and close the doors even after 40 years the hinges are not sagging or worn out. In the rain the water does not drop into the car (drip rails on the roof and recessed door sills). Lots of things go unknown on these over engineered cars.

Another awesome video! I remember when Mercedes-Benz produced cars like this. I was still too young to drive at this time, but I knew people who drove these old Mercedes-Benz Diesels.

If I were to buy a '79 Mercedes, it would be a W116 450 SEL with the 6.9 and ABS. Weak Diesels are cute but not for me. Give me big V8 gas power all day.
