I think the Golf GTD is one of the best reasonably priced hot hatches you can buy. Sure it may be a jack of all trades, master of none, but that's exactly the point. To be the most practical and usable pocket rocket on the market.
How do you guys like this format? It's just a taste of things to come, as I said in the video unfortunately this video didnt have as much content as I would have liked - but the car is long gone and so is some of the footage! But it gives you some idea of the direction I want to take the content.

These 184 hp engines with a stage 1 custom remap are very quick cars! You can cover ground espesh b roads so quickly and the torque is immense! I had 150mph out of my seat Leon for 184 stage 1 map. Same engine

Bought one in December 2017 and I agree, I think it's one of the best all round cars you can buy. Fast, economical, loads of equipment, good value, drives great and looks even better.

They have the same look literally, just the rear diffuser on the gtd has two exhausts on one side where as the gti has one on each side and of course the red accents one the gti where the gtd has white

We’ve had our MK6 GTD new since 2009. Currently it’s done 66k miles other then the usual servicing, wear and tear items such as tyres, brake pads and disks recently. It’s never let me down in over 10 years of ownership. Still drives and looks good as a new GTD. 😊

KT Indeed, I like the sweeping dynamic indicators on the facelift but think these look just a bit more special. I have a really nice shot of the rear lights taken on a good camera that I sadly forgot to include.

John Doe I think they are more distinctive. The mk7.5 you could be looking at any model, whereas on the mk7 if you see these its so easy to tell you’re looking at a GTI, GTD or R

I currently own a golf gtd and love it. Sold my gas guzzling focus st which I did love but was sooo expensive to run. I also love the golf r which is an amazing car. I couldn't afford it so had to settle for the gtd. Not sure how you find the driving experience in the golf r to be "dead" with no personality. It is an amazing car and to be honest, as much as I love my gtd, it is lightyears away from the gold r regarding handling and all round performance. I drove the golf r and its just an amazing vehicle. The gold gtd is a warm hatch at best but is still a great car which I do love for its mix of economy and performance. But to say the golf r steering is lackluster and dead is a bit harsh I think. But I guess its all down to opinion. Nice video tho

Thanks for the feedback. The GTD is a great choice. In terms of what I said about the golf R, its just the 4WD that takes away from the handling a bit. Its an immense point and shoot weapon, and a great car. But I ended up getting a Cupra with the golf R engine in FWD format. Although the steering was still a bit vague on centre, the overall handling was much more engaging than the Golf R, which reflected what I said here. The golf R is hugely fast, but I just don't find it that involving. I loved my GTD anyway, and the economy of diesel is a nice bonus.

I have a 2013 Gtd with a remap. It's pretty comparable to a Focus ST 225bhp - maybe a little quicker. I pulled on one in 2nd pretty easily. Definite fast diesel.

Yeah they’re very similar in terms of performance (I’ve the ST diesel - stage 1). 235 on dyno with around 480nm torque.

Good video mate, bit off on the pricing tho! Seem to be a lot cheaper than the equivalent GTI due to the whole dieselgate thing. Perfect opportunity to pick up a bargain. Got one 2014 50k miles for £12,500 3 months ago.

Cheers! Yeah I realise its fluctuating massively at the moment. You got a really good deal there. I'm glad I leased because over the course of my 2 year lease I paid around £5500 total. The car was £29,995. I think the depreciation would have been way more than that. It may not be quite a GTI but its very close and you cant mock the torque.

RideWithMe I’ve more plenty of issues with mine I’ve fixed them all including reconditioned turbo and new clutch/flywheel. Just need to sort my boot opening then it’s up for sale

Not a chance in hell is that 240hp 400ft lbs and especially with a dtuk box, the turbos wont flow more than 220hp-230hp and the cp4.1 fuel pumps are maxxed at 240hp and cause rail drain at the pressure needed for that power, these tdi 184`s are doing 220hp 330ft lbs safely with a proper remap which are far superior to any of these tuning boxes.

i have the 2.0 tdi gt been thinking about getting stage 1 remap, i heard that if u get a remap u should get the delay valve removed other wise the clutch will slip, any thoughts on this?

I'm assured the clutch on these are good for the power stage 1 runs, and I never had issues myself, but of course it is best to seek advice on it.

Just about to chop our manual 7 GTD for a late 7.5 DSG. Overall it’s a decent family car. Throttle pedal calibration is naff as is the electric PAS & unreliable auto-handbrake but it’s reasonably competent. Needs a bit more puff as standard for my liking. Il probably remap the new one once the warranty expires.

The map makes a good difference, I'd recommend a proper remap. I agree that the modern electric stuff wasnt all that but it was much better in my 2018 Seat Cupra, so I imagine it will be better in the mk7.5 also. Enjoy!

ULEZ will come in and kill the resale value of those kind of cars, so best to tackle it now really. You'll probably feel this is a bit different due to the front wheel drive, but I think theres still plenty of fun to be had, and I think in black they look expensive too. I loved mine.

Couldnt agree more, such a good allrounder especially with a basic tune to 220hp but with my manual box I hate the flywheel judder. Thats my only vice. Next one I get will be DSG.

Yeah agreed. I have a Cupra 300 DSG now and love the box. Dual clutch can be a bit jerky round town compared to a traditional auto but out on the move its epic.

Great video man, I've decided on a 5 door diesel for my next car. I'm currently stuck between getting a 16plate gtd or a 14 plate audi a3 2.0 184 tronic. Any thoughts on the audi? Still not 100% on an getting an auto either haha

I've driven an a3 and found the overall interior quality to be a bit nicer, but its the same engine so you won't really notice much difference otherwise. Personally I think in GTD trim the golf looks more expensive than the common audi, even the S3 in that pre-facelift form is starting to look dated now. I think the GTD had aged really well. The DSG box is great, manual was good fun in this but I'd have to have the DSG for the day to day ease of living.

Have been thinking of a Mk7 GTD next when it comes to trading in the Mercedes A200D. I like the fact the GTD sounds good too unlike most other diesels that sound like tractors. My questions are: Do they come with different spec? Optional extras etc? Do they all come with those tartan style seating? I'm not a fan of them :( Good video 👍🏻

Matthew Robbins They dont sound much different to any other modern diesel. There is some artificial sound pumped into the cabin. There was an optional ‘sport and sound’ pack which added a speaker on the exhaust which gave more false sound. There are plenty of different options available including bigger wheels, panoramic sunroof, audio upgrades etc, the usual stuff. As for the seats, the only way to get rid of the tartan pattern is to get the optional full leather.

Leaving it the recommended settings I never had any issues. Having a proper remap done is always better but this is an easy and cost effective way to do it, and is reversible so great if you want to return the car to standard.

8:01 get it remapped, you can drive it like a petrol car (my torque doesn't drop off till 4.500 rpm, but is still higher than stock up there) and yet you can still shift early for Economy 👍🏻

Yep, had my Octavia vRS tuned by REVO and it’s transformed the car. Really underpowered stock and sluggish in 1/2 gear. With a map it’s very brisk

I've driven the gtd, coming from a mk5 gt tdi I don't think it feels that much quicker surprisingly. Maybe because these are so refined, looking to drive a gti soon and decide between the two. I drive less than 8000 miles a year so I think the gti makes more sense.

I'd probably agree if you can afford it. Theres no doubt the GTi is the better 'drivers car' and I prefer the way the petrol feels overall. I actually prefer the looks of the GTD though in the case of the MK7. The GTD is a great compromise though if you really want good running costs.

Absolutely agree. I recently got a 15 Passat TDI SE Manual and she liked it so much she started looking at Golfs. I was honestly surprised that the interior has more room than her 2016 Rav 4. She LOVES it. I’m jealous of the paddle shifters in the Golf. Makes it so much fun to drive.

That's pretty high mileage for a 7.5 considering it must be 2017 or newer. Diesel engines go on for a long time but if I was spending that much money on a car I'd probably look for one slightly lower personally

jack smith I’ve driven a DSG GTi, and of course the engine and powerband feel very different, so the way it delivers power isnt the same. But the chassis on the GTD and the handling is nearly comparable. Its a very capable car, more economical than the GTI and personally I think the GTD looks better. Of course if you want a proper hot hatch then petrol is the only way to go, but this is still ‘hot’ in my eyes!

@@ItsDanLatham I have a deal available at the mo for approx £12 for a mk6 r runnign approx 280 bhp. But there is quite a price difference between the gtd at 5k and the r at 12k (both mk6). I do approx 12k miles a year.

I got 27 local in my Cupra 300 DSG. 32 for a diesel isnt the best but on a motorway run you'd wipe the floor with it !!

Standard this, the sound you hear is just artificial being pumped through the soundactuator. The sport and sound package adds an external one too.

i have the skoda octavia mk3 184 and if im not wrong thats the same engine as the GTD right?

Correct! They use the 184 engine in a few different VAG cars. So expect similar performance with a remap - well worth it if you are still on standard power in my opinion.

35mpg ish round town realistically. I was 20 at the time. Insurance was around £1500 with admiral with a few years ncb.

I've not seen proof dtuk boxes get 240bhp. I wouldn't trust the fueling from a box. Diesels need good maps and testing to avoid catastrophe

It was leased not bought, you wouldn't get close to these numbers on Finance at the time but the lease deals are long gone now. Your best bet now is probably to finance a used one.

Gifted Not owned it for a few years now but at a guess around £55 to fill at current prices, and that would likely get you around 500 mile range if you’re driving mixed and without a heavy foot.

RideWithMe he definitely doesn’t drive like a granny.. he’s chatting out his arse hahaha, you’ve pretty much confirmed my purchase though I have a 1.2 polo currently and it costs £60 to fill and I only get 320 miles so that’s some upgrade for me as I do 180 miles minimum on motorways a week 👀

Gifted I have had it cost £60+ but really depends on fuel prices. Its still a fair bit more range than you have now and a LOT more power and torque. I think as I mentioned in the video its one of the best engines in its class for price/performance economy wise. I had a Cupra 300 after this which uses a similar engine to the golf GTi and that would get me about 300 miles to £55 which I didnt think was too bad for a 300bhp petrol.

The 1 series is plummeting in value and definitely makes a good proposition as time goes on. Depends on what you're after - drivers may prefer the dynamics of the BMW but many consumers will trust the Golf name and know that maintenance and reliability will be in favour of the VW.

MK7.5 is the facelift, which received new bumpers, lights and some revisions to the interior like virtual cockpit and a larger infotainment display. I'm sure there are differences in the standard trim also.

I had a mk7 GTD for getting on for 2 years now and have always wanted the dtuk box but couldn’t stomach the 429 price without solid proof that it does improve the performance Is it worth it?

Well worth it, especially as you can sell it on if you get rid of the car. Just be sure to keep it on the recommended settings to avoid it putting the car into limp mode. The torque difference is awesome though and its just as fast as some of the permanent remap solutions I have seen.

Jason Buckham nothing noticeable at all. These modern DPFs do a lot for getting rid of that. It would probably produce if you changed the exhaust setup considerably.

Jason Buckham My GTD was manual but my new Cupra 300 is DSG. Super smooth through the gears, you don’t even notice the change. As with any dual clutch it can be a bit jolty in traffic between 1st and 2nd but not too bad. But as soon as you’re on the move you’ll be shocked how fast and seamless the changes are.

RideWithMe nice! Swapped the manual for dsg which also has the sport/sound pack that makes it sound much better for a diesel. Just have to convince the wife to get the dtuk now! 🤞🏻

Had it on for over a year. Only issues I had were on 2+2 mode (most harsh torque curve) sometimes on a hot day under hard acceleration it would go into limp mode, too much boost pressure I guess? Turning the car off and on again would clear it. I put it back into 1+2 which is the recommended setting and it was good as gold after that. When I got rid of the car I sold the box on for 2/3 what I paid for it so its a decent way to do it.

Jason Buckham Not as far as I know. I had my friend check with vagcom (he owns a skoda dealership) and he said there were no easily detectable codes or anything. I’m sure a tech could delve deeper but I had no issues when I gave my lease back.

Ivan Yunda i got rid of it at 15k so not a lot! Its electric speed sensitive so very light at low speeds

These engines generally average 170 bhp on independent Dynos just remember that when going for a stage 1 tune.

Never owned a diesel before but I'm thinking about getting a GTD and getting it mapped. Currently driving a Fiesta ST MK7 and doing about 15k miles a year. Is there anything to look out for? Also could consider a GTI.

I've driven one of those and this feels way more refined. Might not feel as 'fast' but the torque more than makes up for it and the chassis on the golf is excellent. In terms of faults, look out for door rattle, clutch failure on manuals (people who drive it a bit rough) and issues with the electronic handbrake. The GTi is definitely a better car overall in terms of driving machine just because of the heritage and the petrol powerband, but I had a lot of fun with the torque and the economy is way better especially for yourself with high yearly mileage. The GTD still has a very similar feel. I think you'd be very happy with it. Looks way more expensive/smart than the fiesta too IMO. Currently drive a 300bhp Seat Cupra and although its rapid and sounds great it doesnt match the sheer grunt of the diesel. Good luck!

Steve Hampson My mate has a virtual cockpit in his Audi A4 and it is awesome, definitely would want it. Also I love the new front lights on the mk7.5. However I prefer the rear lights and the wheels of the mk7. 7.5 will probably hold better money too. I guess if you can afford it then go for it, but if not the mk7 is still a very good choice.

DTUK call it 'Stage 2' But really its a small bump over the Stage 1 map. Although I had induction done on this. Its not your traditional stage 2.

Birmingham racing On the strongest map setting the boost would sometimes put the car into limp mode on a hard launch. I changed it to the recommended setting and had no issues running it for over a year. Then when the car went back I sold the box for 2/3 what I paid for it so not bad really.

I would agree.. The Octavia vRS is the bigger, comfy, better spec'd vehicle on the same MQB Platform but cheaper by a decent amount, plus you can get it in more interesting colours like Rallye Green and Race Blue too

I have a 2015 gtd if I was to rate out of 10 I’d give it 4. Not really fast or impressive, handling is so so, interior is a bit cheap, infotainment is quite poor, economy is shocking! 23mpg round town changing gear at 2k rpm - motorway 40-50mpg ( VW are lying when they say 60+). Ok car... could be improved massively.

@@bengenovese6591 Depends where you live I suppose. 4WD is handy for launching away from lights and stuff but the main benefit is in snow and ice, or muddy conditions etc. I live in London so it snows maybe 3 days of the year and I still manage to get ahead of most stuff from the lights in this day to day so it suited me fine. I went FWD for my next car too, a Cupra 300 DSG. I preferred it to the 4WD Golf R to drive personally, but again, I see why you would choose the 4WD.

I think AWD only really matters when you're buying that level of car when you're really wanting to tune it and get the power down. I've got the Scirocco R 278 and it's basically pointless putting your foot down cos you wheelspin for days

VELOCETTEify Each to their own. I had it for two years and thought it was a great all rounder. There are better cars out there sure, but pound for pound the GTD is good value. Plenty of people seem to agree!
