Living in the Netherlands sounds pretty nice in general. I feel that the United States needs to really improve public transportation as well as embrace holidays and vacations more. I like how the Netherlands (and the same with other European countries) try not to have you go over 40 hours in the work week. After all, it is better to work to live than live to work!

Public transportation is such a plus over here! Obviously, it's not super great in rural areas, but still better than in a lot of the US. But the work thing...yes, absolutely. We work to live over here (also with a lot of vacation time) not live to work.

I guess the doctor will say ‘just get some paracetamol’ when people come in with minor ailments that heal on there own and don’t need actual medical attention. Just take it easy for a few days (and take a paracetamol ;-) ). If the symptoms persists, then you go in. In some countries it’s more common to go to the doctor for every little thing and get a prescription. Even getting antibiotics for a flu, which doesn’t make any sense, because it’s a viral infection, not bacterial. This way antibiotic resistance will build up. I like how the doctors here in the Netherlands aren’t eager to prescribe drugs and rely on the amazing self healing capability of a human body unless it’s really necessary. That being said, I did have to insist to see a specialist on two occasions when I knew something was wrong but didn’t have clear symptoms. I’m glad I did, because both times I was right. So advocating for yourself is important. I do think not getting medication/drugs for everything might have helped here as well, because you learn how your body feels and reacts to different situations.

Great video. Lke your energy :) One comment. For an average citizen in the NL, public transport is pretty expensive nowadays. Especially the train.
@aWanderlustForLife
@aWanderlustForLife Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I pay for the abonnement for NS and GVB (Amsterdam), so it's cheaper and many get reimbursed by their work for commutes. Some can use the NS business cards for more than regular commutes, too! My main reason for bringing it up is that many people in the US don't have the option and need cars which is very expensive. I dont think I made the comparison well, because someone else commented this as well!

@@lennyvandercoelen2961 Yeah, in the US it's quite a bit more expensive to own a car. I did the math and I can get an unlimited off-peak / weekend rail pass, plus a monthly two-zone tram pass in Den Haag for two people and still save 200 euro / USD a month. And that's for a pretty basic car under 20,000.

The 14 day right of return does not apply when you buy items in a physical shop. It does apply to on-line purchases where you can return goods without even having to explain why you return them. In physical shops you do not have this right. The seller may accept your return, but they can tell you that you're not getting your money back but instead get store credit or they can simply refuse to take the item back. Of course the shop owner must accept returns if the product is faulty, but they have no obligation to accept items that you just regret buying. The 2 year warranty is also not as clear cut as you think. In general there must be a reasonable balance between the price of the product and the warranty. You can not expect 2 years of warranty on a € 35 Chinese tablet. On the other hand a seller can not reasonably argue that your €2200 laptop is out of warranty within 2 years.

I work 38H a week, get 182 hours of paid vacation. Also get around 40 hours a year, to safe up for retiring earlier. Since I have around 40 years 😢 to go, I get retire a year earlier. NS may have its problems, but the Dutch railway is the most densed railway in THE WORLD. So yes any problem (a failing train for ex) has influence over the other trains as well. People tend to follow their experience, while facts actually state the NS is pretty good. An ambulance would only cost you 380, once… the second time is free and so on. Doctors here don’t wanna prescribe heave drugs (like oxycodon etc) Sp yea they will probably say take some paracetamol.
@mauricebenink
@mauricebenink Жыл бұрын
Ive heard the take some paracetamol from some expats colleagues too. However what they would do is go to the doctor becuase they had some flue symptoms. Or they twisted a muscle just very minor things. They also quickly learned that the doctor is there mainly for something that 1. Doesnt heal on its own 2. Causes serious discomfort 3. Is a threat to your overall health At our office new expats also get told stuff like this. They get reminded to take their holiday. Told to go the f home if they dont feel well.

This summer has been atypical. Maybe it will be typical in the future, who knows. And I know one better country (looking from the outside in) to live. Switzerland.

I guess when you don't have a car, car insurance, and parking to pay for, public transportation doesn't seem so expensive. And I have the abonnement for discounts. When you phone for an ambulance you phone the emergency line and a policeman answers and asks what's wrong and if needed he calls the ambulance. I've called 3 times and no issues so I don't know why they say it's difficult.
@aWanderlustForLife
@aWanderlustForLife Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's a matter of it being difficult to call, but the gatekeeping as to whether you need an ambulance or to go to the hospital. It's normal (or at least it used to be) to call an ambulance for anything in the USA. Even here, I've been in a situation that my group had to call an ambulance for an unknown medical emergency. They checked her out and dropped her at a bus stop. This specific emergency, I would have expected they take her to the hospital for observation. And they definitely would have in the USA.

If you make a claim on the house insurance does the excess go up next year
@williamgeardener2509
@williamgeardener2509 Жыл бұрын
Not in the Netherlands. You pay a premium based on the insured amount which is the value of your house. If you claim for a broken window your premium will not change because the value of your house hasn't changed. Same goes for your contents insurance. However if you make a claim too many times, the insurance might tell you that you need to stop making claims or they will ban you. Once you're banned it becomes very difficult to get a new insurance, even with a totally different insurer.

As a Dutch citizen I feel you're correct on the infrastructure. It's good. It's not great, but pretty decent most of the time. Depends on where you live though - the people living in the North really hate the guts of the NS for blocking the connection to Germany by the Deutsche Bahn (German rails), just to prevent any competition. That's another reason they use Arriva instead of the NS. Also, train signs on stations are pretty bad if you're used to London or Paris. It's just... not set up to deal with people who don't already know where they are. A bit parochial, I'd say. On the other hand, you can generally get a train to where you want to go, when you want to go, and it will get you there safely.

What we do wrong....were keeping a prime-minister alive, in a political sense, who is coming up short, finding solutions for some serious problems we have. But we don't have a political successor who can follow him up. So now we just do it as in a Dutch phrase; pappen en nat houden...stick to it as long as we can....We are not the best country in the world...but if you as an expat looking for a fairly well organised country, with a high standard of infra-structure on many levels, then the Netherlands can be a good country to stay. the whole doctor will send you of with the advise to take a paracetomol is a myth, in all of my 58 years ive always been taken seriously when i go to the doctor and never send home with paracetomol advise... the perfect country does not excist but the netherlands comes close in my opinion. sure we got high taxes but we actually get a lot for that in return back. sure we don't have a lot of housing available, a reason for that (1 reason, not all of it comes to that) is the many refugy's from war torn country's coming to us for shelter. it's a small country but we are very smart people, at least half of all technology comes out of the netherlands and we are the kings of water management. most dutch people only work 36 hours a week by the way... about our directness: some people (americans in particular, no offence to that please) are always beating around the bush and never speak the truth, i find that very hard to swallow. i rather have somebody tell me the truth then having to figure out if he/ she meant what they said and so on. it must be hard to hear the truth for some people even if it isnt said or meant to be hurtfull, but that's just the dutch attitude i guess... it all comes down to beeing efficient.

The water management, cleaning waste etc, all the public facilities are still good organised and funded i gues. BUT las 8 years VVD did slowly make entrepreneurship very difficult, very expensive to have people working for you unless you are a large multi-nationals, because like other gov, these multinationals apparently dont have to pay tax, and have special privilages, strange that is. So back things are ok. What is your opinion on the electricity and gas prices going litterly, so this march up to 2.8 times the prevoius price? Where do normal income people find the money to pay the electrical bill. So it is a bluff a large scam everybody, and especially the normal people feel it now. And there is a saying one that controle the food, controle the life of people, what is your opinion on the fake "nature regions" that force 50% of the farmers out of bussines. So suddenly, the so high efficient and technological high invested farmers need to go away by 50% . and Rabobank and other banks do want there loans immidiatly back. Suddenly the Bankers take the farmers long family tradition away. Cant youi see it, we are normal people living lux, buying food, but next upcomming years we will see the food price development. You have to udnerstand netherlands was so great country because the high quality food production, Campina and Ahold still makes good food quality, the price was just enough to fund the high quality at AH and people did buy at AH and still buy, at Jumbo, but you have to understand already now and next year it will be Little and Aldi, and maybe some crazy grocery with food from other countries? But back again, what is your oppion on Davos. Rutte has agreed on the plans, and the 50% farmers reduction is an expression of the plan, Rutte was never so rude and raw, normally he had passion for the countries policy, that is why Netherlands is still great, but cant you see, if food export goes away then Nethelands will become poorer and less wealthy, and people are dependend on organisation that give them food, and that is the goverment. How do you earn your income? I dont understand, you believe in the more lithion battery infrastructure, cant you understand that lithion and other battery stuff are so dangerrous for the enviorment, that is where it is produced and also the waste were the batteries are dumped? They say obviously there are ways to collect these lithion batteries and process them, but it is not done in large. A conventional benzine motor polutes yes, but the gases are not dangerous to the nature and human, lithium is also for the drinkwater. Did you see how pulted the Rijn and Maas is because the Multi nationals are allowed to drop bad cleaned waste fluids in the water? That is the VVD. will you have a look at Forum for Democrazy, that political party? and do a comment on that instead of cheering how great Netherlands is. Also i understand the new doctor is not taking your complains seriously?
