I've had mine a month and would swap back to the old custom immediately , tech is absolute nonsense , all driver settings have to be reset each time, to have no stays on rear doors is bordering on stupid , mine has a square steering wheel who knows why, far more noisy than old model , seems lower and the cab doors don't close due to air trapped in cab , not for me and I have had transits every year sing 1982 😢

Drove one for the first time today as they're newly added to the company fleet. Very unimpressed. I thought Mercs were bad after driving them for 15 years, but the Transit is a massive downgrade in almost all areas. Really uncomfortable as a tall guy too. Feels like the seat doesn't slide back anywhere near enough. The power steering feels ancient and I noticed the brake pedal sits higher than the accelerator which took ages to get used to.

I've just had a 1 hour test driver of the 'NEW' Transit custom, Australian customer. Overall? I am disappointed. I praised the last model, and hoped this one would solve the few issues. For Euro readers, we only get basically 2 trim levels, the 'Van' and the Sport. Both are high specced compared to what you would get in Europe. This is to minimise the stock that needs to be catered for in a relatively small market. Some of my notes may only be relevant to the local market. The Good: - Drivers seat is much improved, the old one was garbage, the new one just feels supportive. It is also lower to the floor. and feels more car rather than van like. - Barn doors now do not have protruding. - The stupid half glass side windows have been replaced with a full window. - Roof height lowered to help fit into low car parks, this is great, but obviously the internal height has also reduced. I suspect this is also because of the AWD option available in Europe. - Column mounted auto selector save space. - LED headlights standard (new) - Keyless Start Standard (new) - Automatic climate control standard (new) The Bad:, the list is long. - The instrument cluster is complicated looking and hard to read, its angle isn't towards the driver, its pointed down in comparison to your eyes. - Square steering wheel, like all square steering wheels is shit. - Brake pedal way so spongee and soft, I guess that could have been this particular vehicle. - Van has keyless push button start but NO buttons on any of the external door handles. You have to pull out the fob to lock and unlock. Absolute insanity. That was one feature I was looking forward to. Having you hands full of crap and needing to dig into a pocket isn't good. - Flip up roof racks were standard in the Australian delivered cars all the way back to 2015, now you have to pay $2000! - I was told no rear lift gate option until the MY24 models. This has always been a popular option in Australia for trades vans, keeps the sun and rain off. whist working in the back. Out vans are always glazed in the rear too, so gives better rear viability. - Dual sliding doors is an option. Again, many other competitors don't even offer one door, another $1000 option. - Has plastic wheel caps rather than silver steel wheels. These are work vehicles. Silver steel wheels just work, they tried this before with one model year of the previous gen and soon switched back. - Driving position HAS improved from last gen, but its not SUV good like a Toyota Hi-Ace or Hyundai Staria. The steering wheel reach doesn't come close enough either. - Passenger seat still sucks. Its a van seat. Competitors have a full bucket just like the driver. Some of us actually drive long distances with a passenger. - Pressing the park button in the auto DOESN"T engage the electronic hand brake, its another button to press right in the middle of the dash! Why would you have the van in park and the park brake off? When selecting drive, it will release the park brake, but its hesitant to do so. - Just doesn't drive as nice as the previous model. The last model actually had alive steering for a commercial vehicle, this feels like a computer game. - The thing as a whole doesn't feel as solid or well made as the last one, doors feel tinny. Other notes, - No more manual option for the Australian market, and this engine just doesn't have the right feel for an auto, and we get the the 2nd most powerful engine spec. - No AWD option for Australia, sure it doesn't snow much, but driving off road for building sites and maintenance is common place. I have waited a long time for this, I am not impressed Ford.

I see they have copied the Austin Allegro square steering wheel. I guess the designers are too young to remember how well that went down. Seems a step backward in quality with this model. They have cheaped out with no buttons for the heater controls, that would drive me mad. Also the thing about not being able to get 8x4 sheets in upright anymore, the old transits were smaller but were bigger inside.

No disrespect to Ford because in general they are a very sound and solid car maker and definitely know how to advertise. But I get that Ford are trying to make the Transit much more like the VW Transporter - this is why they have asked the German company for their input. The reason for this is the popularity of the Peugeot Expert and with that you can include a) Citroen Dispatch, b) Vauxhall Vivaro and c) the Toyota Proace. But it's very much the Peugeot that are selling more than Citroen, Vauxhall or Toyota. You see the Royal Mail, Police Scotland and many others using the Peugeot Expert these days and of course Peugeot took their lead off VW when re-styling the Expert and it would seem that they have found a winner, that's why many other Van makes have followed suit.

That's a good insight, Neil. Thank you. It will be interesting to see how this sells compared to its predecessor. The last Custom outsold every other van on the market. At one point it was the best selling vehicle on the road. It is a tough act to follow.

Sure is. It was developed in conjunction with VW as they will be sharing the common platform.

I have never had much of a problem with rust on my vans, apart from the early Sprinters I had. They were terrible. Mark.
