I review the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T with the 440 Six Pack V8 engine and 4 speed manual transmission to see if it's better than the new generation Challenger RT. THIS is the best era of cars. 797 hp challengers of the showroom floor 640hp Cadillac sedans with extreme reliability. 50 years from now were going to be drooling over the cars we see on the lots today. Now is the ERA

That's because it wasn't designed on a computer. Everything beautiful & timeless is before computers... Golden Gate Bridge, the Titanic, the P-51 Mustang , etc, etc, etc.

My favorite thing about Dodge is that they kept the general idea for the design with the modern challenger. It’s a modern take on a classic. When you look at the two side by side they don’t look too different. Obviously it’s changed a lot but they’re the same but different. Especially when compared to Chevy and Ford. The modern Camaro and Mustang look nothing like their 1970 version. Same goes for the Charger. Dodge knocked it out of the park with the Challenger

Long live the Mopar E body.. This is the car that makes me appreciate the new ones even more, staying true to their roots. These and the 70/71 Cuda are just so amazing to me.

My dad had a 70 Cuda that he used to race, but then street as well. I loved that car and still wish I could own it. He sold it long ago, but still has some idea as to who has owned it recently. Maybe someday I'll track that car down...(dreaming, lol).

B Body is still the best, but E body isn't bad. Cuda and Challenger both were gorgeous designs. I really wish they'd bring back REAL retro designs on newer cars instead of the "modernized retro" look like they do with the newer Challenger and the new crappy Charger EV.

Only a fool would think new cars and trucks are better than the old ones. I own and drive a 37 year old Ford truck and I wouldn't trade it for 20 new trucks.

This car.The Charger. Superbee, Galaxie 500s, Mustang Shelby GT 500 67-70, 1998 Trans Am WS6, Roadrunners, 66-70 Chevelle, 64-70 Pontiac GTO, 68-72 Camaro, 60s El dorado, Ford GT 40, 68-72 Corvettes,. Chrysler 300s 50-60s, 60/70s Cadillac, 68-70 Mustang. Buick 6Os Rivera, 66-70 Coronet, 50s T-bird, C2 Corvettes, 55-62 Corvettes, the Cudas, Daytonas, 1932 Ford coupe, 1939 Ford coupe. and the 62-69 Impala, 67 Nova, are the best looking American cars ever produced. Hands down.

Shepard dude what the fuck are you on about? Are you implying convenience = lack of skill? Because I’d say that’s a pretty ignorant blanket statement. Also cars nowadays are a LOT more powerful and capable. But I guess a 70s challenger with 425hp is more raw than a Hellcat challenger with 707HP and over 600 ft/lbs of torque because it doesn’t have “”gizmos”” lmao please fix yourself

I've always loved the '70 Challenger and the 440 6-Pack motor. The image that pops into my mind instantly with the '70 Challenger is that of the film, "Vanishing Point" from 1971. The era of the American Muscle Car was truly an amazing, and fun time for Car Guys. I owned a '70 GTO Ram Air IV with p/s, but no power brakes while I was in 12th grade. Some kids had no idea what the car was while others adored it. I had it for over a year, and daily drove it to work and school before the motor blew up on my 18th birthday. Love these older muscle cars, and vibes of the classic simple lines of American Muscle. Great review Matt.

This is my dream car. A 1970 (specifically because i like the grill for that year) dodge challenger R/T. And i do want a 426 hemi with a manual but i know those are rare for an original one. Luckily mopar still makes them as crate blocks.

Oh and also i have a theory for the speedometer going to 8000. There was an option to get the 426 hemi in it, and those things revved very high for their time, around 7200

My friend had one of those cars back in the day, triple black. To say which one is better is not a fair question. It's a matter of choice, comparing the older one to the modern one is like compairing apples to oranges, the only similarity they both have is the name. The old is the old, and the new is the new, both great cars, but as for me, I prefer the old but thats me. I have a soft spot for "old school" Muscle cars.

I owned two 1970 Challenger's & now own a 2014 R/T with the Hemi which is a vastly superior car in every way as gorgeous as the '70 looks, you can have a blast with close to 400HP as a Hellcat is overkill.

Wow, a fantastic profile on my absolute favorite muscle car of all time Matt, a great job man! I had a Vitamin C Orange '70 R/T with 440 4-barrel & 727 automatic with 323 rear gears as well as a Black '70 318 Challenger of the many Mopars I had, only $2700 for my 440 R/T in the late 80's! I own & love my 2014 R/T Blacktop Edition with Super Track Pack & a 5.7 Hemi, it is a far better car in numerous ways compared to the 1970 as beautiful as it looks!

@@tylercouture216 My 1970 went 146 mph & my 2014 tops out at 155 mph, not slow at all & I have owned 90 vehicles, many the very best muscle cars from every manufacturer.

There is just something about that rumble and feel of an original muscle car. Just seeing him sit in that car as he started it for the first time triggered really fond memories. I drove a classic Mustang 289 for nearly 20 years and even without power steering or power brakes, it was so much fun to drive. Modern cars are so much easier to drive that it kind of numbs the experience.

@@elizabethash-petta4830 , this is a 1970 in this video. Kowalski’s was a 1970 R/T with 440 Magnum, four speed, in Alpine white. It was also a very early production model because it had the body color fuel cap.

I have a new one and have to agree. The old ones are wider and lower, whereas the newer ones look too tall in comparison. They got a lot of design cues right, but it's just how modern cars are made unfortunately.

The classic Challenger is THE muscle car to me. Everything about it is perfect. I really hope I can own one someday. Which is becoming harder as each year passes. They've been crazy expensive & rare for a long long time now. They are becoming rarer and more expensive each year. One day...... one day.

I couldn't give a flip about his over-analyzing the issue. If I were to go to a dealership (& I did), used any of the technological mumbo-jumbo that he spews here (& I did not), I would buy myself whatever Challenger FELT RIGHT for me (& I did). Except for the Charger. Todays Charger looks nothing like the old chargers. I love both charger and challenger but being someone that loves old cars especially old muscle cars, i just feel more attsched to the newer Challengers because of the omage (sorry for my spelling) it looks like a uplifted version. Still getting a 73' Challenger next year when i move

Great vid on the sweetest looking vehicle Detroit has ever built! Nothing sexier than an E-Body! Crazy that they basically made an updated version of the 70-74 and has sold so well that the basic style hasn’t changed on the new Challenger it’s entire run. Pretty much proves how timeless a design that body style is. On a side note, you look like you could be actor Jimmi Simpson’s brother.

Great job Matt relating your observations to our present day cars. I thought my 1969 Highland Green Mustang GT was incredible but it too jumped out of gear. Thank God it had disc brakes. It doesn’t even compare with my 2019 Bullitt.

The white exterior on the 1970 Challenger is one of the best color choices IMO. This example is MINT and appears to have been rotisserie restored better than it left the factory.

The new challenger is great, fast and exciting I’m so glad Dodge stepped up and did it right, still the sound,the feel, the ride in old muscle is amazing makes you smile no matter what crap happened in your day, no bells and whistles, no in dash display and bunch a nonsense, just a key, spark and loads of fuel sucked in through a big block 440

Nicks car has only 1 four barrel, not a 6 pack. Nick’s challenger is very true to the Vanishing point car. Right down to the correct fuel cap.

Was this car all original? Pretty cool to see how something like this is up close. Maybe I’d get lucky to see one at a cars n coffee but to see the interior details and learn how it drives us really fun. I always looked at them as much bigger than other pony cars, it was surprising to see how small it was inside. Great video!

Horn problems were relatively common on many cars back then. And the sensation of riding with 4 or more people all smoking cigarettes, each with their own ashtray, in a vehicle freshly loaded with 20gal of gasoline! Those were the days!

I have questions about the one I had. 1970 challenger R/T 340 4barrel 4 speed. AHRA scatter shield, high speed clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. High rpm cam with solid lifters, adjusted to 10 thousands. What 340 heads were adjustable? Oh yes, long tube headers with 3 inch pipes

Rash that the stock 5.7L RT, which we think of as not being that fast would absolutely blow this car out of the water. Progress is a wonderful thing.

Jedi391 No they wouldn’t. They’re about the same performance-wise. Now the 392 Hemi, well that’s a different story. Also, for shits and giggles, throw a set of bias-ply tires like what’s on this car on your 5.7 whatever and see how it performs.

Hi! Can you help me with the lights in/on the car? Does the dashboards light up when you are driving the car? Does it have an interior light? If yes does it turn on automatically when you open the door and fade out after closed? What lights are on the front and rear, when do they light up (break light, reverse light, how is the turn signal works on the rear and the front)? Thank you for your help! -Tom from Hungary

The steering on non-assist manual steering has that play in it by design. It is because when you hit bumps in road the steering won't jerk the wheel from you and cause loss of control. On the steering gear box there is an adjustment screw for the gears so you can adjust the backlash if to much play is there. If it is to tight you can't turn the wheel, to loose and of course you won't have control because gears barely mesh.

I've had both and while you'll never forget the experience of the 70's version, you'll want to forget how much tinkering they required. They were constantly going out of tune, blowing header gaskets, leaks, carb issues, and electrical issues. Really fun when they worked but you spent a lot of time on them. They were also evil handling- 14" bias plies and the rubber back then wasn't anywhere near as good as what you can get today. Had an '09 SRT 8 Challenger also with a manual tranny which was also pretty heavily modified. No comparison in build quality, creature comfort, reliability, and handling. And yes, with some mods my '09 was considerably faster than my '73. Loved them both but the modern era cars are vastly superior in every way except how much attention you get at a gas station; the 70's cars always attract a crowd.

The 70 Challenger has been my favorite car of all time since I was like 14, when they came out with the newer Challengers, it sorta felt like they did it for me, cuz no one ever seemed to talk about Challengers, but man I always thought it was the most perfectly muscle-car-looking muscle car out there! The lines and shapes are tasteful and not overdone, there's a straight lines look to it and a curvy look to it at the same time, I love every inch of that car! Maybe if I hit the lottery or get a crazy paying gig, i'll make the one I see in my head and my dreams, lemme paint a picture for those who would nerd out about stuff like that, haha: hard top only, matte gunmetal gray with matching bumpers with a matte black hood stripe, I want the shaker popping out of the hood, but I still want the classic hood with the iconic shape and racing stripe, just fabbed with a hole for the shaker, matte black 71 AAR Cuda side stripes (my 2nd favorite car of all time) with the duckbill spoiler painted gunmetal, blacked out trim and grilles, tinted windows and lamps, rollcage, little bit bigger fat drag rear wheels and a flat black set of the kinds of rims on diesel trucks and trailers and shit, the industrial stock steel rims, only a nice looking set, going for a very Batman/Punisher/heavy metal vibe. I also always wanted to add the little vent trim pieces for the side fenders, there's one on the 71 Challenger right in front of the rear wheels, and on the 73 and 74 right behind the front wheels, I don't want the racing stripes that come out of those,, too many racing stripes, haha, but i've always wanted to add both of those to the sides of a 70, might sound weird, but that's just me. Black interior, maybe suede, with Hemi orange accents, pistol shift and as cheesy as it is, I sorta want a spare chain style steering wheel, but I want it painted to look like it's burning hot metal, I also want the engine bay and trunk and shit to be Hemi orange, the trunk mostly rhino lined though, I want the interior floorboards to be rhino lined too, I don't want it to have fabric, and I want custom matching rubber Challenger floor mats, easier to keep clean, and i'd want a badass stereo system cuz i'm a death metal guitar player, and if the engine's gonna match the caliber of the look of the car, i'll need to overpower it when I do actually wanna hear my music :P maybe with a Hellcat dropped in there, idk haha, if we're talking lottery winner status, I'd find a shell and build a new car underneath as much as I could and just have the look of the 70 just cuz I'd want it to last and be reliable cuz I'd drive that thing every day and would want to pass it on at the end of my life.

@@shadykhades oh shit nice :) 14 is a guesstimate, but ya somewhere around there, my parents used to take my brothers and I to Route 66 a lot, after a few years, I started to really hone in on the ones I liked more than others, and at some point I was like, ya I keep comparing everything to the 70 Challenger and the 71 Cuda :P

Had mine in 77-82 rt/se with the raised sixpack hood ,,also had the 340 which handled way better in the corners,,just to have the one today but ,,,,every time i see one just shake my head in regret

The prices on just about anything Mopar have gone through the roof as well. You end up looking at Darts and the like to try to find something even relatively affordable.

I miss hearing the gear whines from a 4 speed and a posi rear, the even-from-the-factories-lumpy-cams and the whaas of 4 (or6!!) barrels coming on. Sigh.

The fact that the old V8’s did 6.3 seconds 0-60 shows how far engines have come. My brand new 2023 V6 challenger I had a best 0-60 so far of 5.6 seconds

I owned that exact car. Well,maybe not "exact" mine was blue with a black vinyl top. I did a lot of extensive work on it. Subbed and tubbed,4link suspension. Motor work bumped it up to 563hp and 598 lb.ft. of torque. I was basically pro street before the term was coined. Nobody ever beat me during the 3yrs. I ran the car. Of course, had I known the factory version would be worth so much today I would never have changed a thing on the car! Nobody had a clue how the market would end up! But, I still had a helluve good time in my hotrod! I have yet to drive a Hellcat but just reading the specs tells me not to get in one. I can't afford the sticker price! So why torture myself!

Size wise back in 1970 this would’ve been considered an intermediate it is actually incredible that in the year 2021 the new challenger is actually longer with a longer wheelbase than the 1970 model so much for downsizing

My dad had a 1970 Challenger R/T 440 Six Pack and 3 speed auto. It was Plum Crazy with the vinyl roof, you can actually see it in my profile picture. He also owned a 1970 Charger R/T with the same motor. He said the Challenger's front end used to lift up at higher speeds but the Charger was a great high speed car. I have a 2015 Challenger Scat Pack Shaker and love it. It's a far superior car to the old one obviously and a great high speed car. I would say if you're comparing the 1970 to the 2008-2014 Challengers, the 1970 wins looks wise by a bit. However, comparing the 1971 to the 2015 and up Challengers and the new ones win. Comparing the New Charger to the old one and I have to say the old is my absolute favorite Mopar of all time. Great review of an awesome classic Matt!

I had a ‘70 Challenger 440 6 pack Banana Yellow in the late 70s. Totally fun to drive but had recurring starter issues. For me driving a new Mustang is more fun - power and handling are great and the price point is more reasonable.

I have the one of one built 70 R/T that I got from Factory rep Lee Joyce. It ran a 9.67 right off the trailer at US 330 in Schererville Indiana Halloween week end of 1969 and was the first titled Challenger in my home state of florida. NO it is not for sale at any price so don't ask. The daily driver is a 68 road runner 440 six pack 833 and dana 60 super track pack 4.56 that I found 25 years ago outside of mount dora florida.

I have a friend of mine that has a 70 Challenger RT/SE with the 440 six pack / automatic transmission in Burnt Orange. It is totally restored. He got 70K in it.

It is better! (Just my opinion) - I would never look twice for a new Challenger but for this one, I would happily break my neck why following it. Great Classic Review again!

They are both so different, but distinctively the same and is why the gen3s outsell Camaro right now to. Not only that, the red eye is packing almost 800 hp and is King of the blacktop as far as production cars. My 4th Mopar was a 70, and love the classics as well. But for an entirely different reason, as the OGs are more raw and in your face. Whereas the late model cars are comfortable high HP machines that you can take to the drag strip on Friday night, and then on a trip cross country. Yeah the 09-14 front grill and tail light assemblies were designed after the 70, and then the 71 from that point on. Same thing with the interior, and was redesigned for the 2015 model year as well. I own a 2010 SRT8 and is a blast to drive, especially with the line lock and other goodies that I've added 😃

I have owned both, a 70' 440SixPack, 4 speed with a super track pack...(4.10 dana) back in the 70's and kept it for almost 30 years, and a 19' Scat Pack Challenger 6 speed manual....they might look somewhat similar but the rawness of the original is just so much more appealing to me, mainly because I grew up driving the original....The new Scat Pack to me feels comfortable, but big and bulky and out weighs the original by almost 500 lbs....the original looked and felt more sporty albeit a dinosaur by todays standards ....I guess apples to oranges....but if I was given a choice between the two today....the 70' with no hesitation.

Yep, that pretty much nails it. That raw driving experience is a big difference. No matter how much horsepower they put into these new cars, it's all muted by computers and damping and modern technology in general. Those things make the new cars much safer and much better drivers, but that's not really the point for any of us that grew up with a classic car. I still brake too early even what, 10 years now since I sold my 67 Mustang? 20 years without power brakes (and drums to boot) will do that to you, lol.

I once owned a 1970 Challenge RT/SE back in 1973. It had factory air. front disk breaks, and a 383 Magnum. Slap stick automatic 3 speed. Rust bronze with a white vinyl roof. I kick myself every time I see a challenger on the road. If I ever see another one that comes close to the one I had, I’m going to buy it. Miss that car. It was VERY FAST.
