My guest today is Andrew Gold. Andrew Gold is an ex-BBC journalist and documentary filmmaker, who now has an excellent podcast called “On The Edge”. Andrew focuses on weird and controversial people, for instance, psychopaths, former cult members, exorcists, and so forth.
In this episode, we discuss Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to leave the UK and the accusation of racism they leveled at the royal family on the way out. We discuss the Israel - Palestine conflict. We talk about the prospect of immortality and whether it would be desirable. We discuss the psychology of gender identity. We talk about pop music, social bubbles, and much more. I really liked this conversation because we dealt with so many seemingly unrelated topics, which is a nice departure from most of my conversations which generally focuses on one topic. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.

If a British person had married into the Royal family of a "protected" ethnic group and refused to play ball then they would have been accused of cultural insensitivity, cultural imperialism, racism and disrespect. In my view Meghan married into a deeply British institution and basically refused to uphold any of the basic standards of honour and personal reserve that is required by that kind of old fashioned cultural model. The sad thing to me is that there is a section of the British public (mainly the young and the metropolitan upper classes) who have also rejected that old form of Britishness - and unfortunately this seems to include Harry, who seems to have totally bought into the cultural left.

I love the comment about appreciating the monarchy as he has got older. I'm in my 60s. When I was young my age group didn't understand why we had a monarchy and thought it old fashioned. Newspapers claimed that Monarchy would die out as a consequence. Some one told me that the young never do understand the benefits of monarch, but they learn to appreciate it as you get older. She was right. Over the years I've watched polls on the monarchy. Nothing has changed. The young still get confused thinking that a head of state would be better if elected. As you get older you appreciate that there are too many evil Presidents who never want to leave power once in office. I don't want a Putin, Trump or Biden as my head of state . The African presidents have been equally as bad. As each generation grows up, they change their views on monarchy. This generation will do the same, once they grow out of this woke cult.

Although the royal family are supported by the British public, very few 'worship' the institution. Does she not take any responsibility for her level of un-preparedness? Can you imagine Harry being able to tell her anything? She definitely had a plan, she is a self serving narcissist. The TV show Suits was medioca at best and she was average in it. · Brand Finance estimates the capital value of the UK Monarchy as a business at £67.5bn · Monarchy’s annual contribution to the UK economy in 2017 is £1.766bn · Annual cost per head is less than £4.50 a year, equal to just over 1p a day They had already accepted Megan into the family so suggesting that the comment regarding the skin colour of the baby was a racist one is illogical and probably suggested by an actual racist. I don't believe that Harry is supporting his wife all of the time out of loyalty or love . I believe that he knows that he would be in trouble if he didn't. And all husbands know what you don't get if you have upset the wife....

After the Netflix drama he was interviewed by a British reporter on TV and was angry that the reporter quoted his accusations on the RF being racist… Harry said ‘ I never said they were racists’ !! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Anyway the wedding would not hv taken place if they were racist. Wow I'm really surprised Coleman is a Markle apologist. I could debate every point he made in defense of Meghan lol. For instance, she dated Harry for a 1&1/2 years before they married- she had plenty of time to "do her homework." In their engagement interview, Harry even says he explicitly warned Meghan about how her life would change being in his family. I wish Andrew would've pushed back a little more.

Her character was getting written out of her show. She had no prospects and at her age, she was floundering. She was not on the up and up at all. 🙄 She was looking for a meal ticket. She was given every opportunity to be prepared for her role. She was given a 30 page dossier with all the instructions that she needed. The queen offered her a mentor and Duchess Sophie, and she turned it down. Her staff of 14 people met before she even came to discuss how to make her integration into the family, more comfortable taking into account her mixed race and the fact that she was an American actress. The queen avails every opportunity every resource to her so that she would be prepared for this. So to say that she wasn’t prepared or didn’t have the resources for this is asinine.

@@caspianhall My my sugar, aren't we upset and sensitive? I'm a retired 62 year old but I'm not an actress so my age isn't relevant. However, the fact of the matter is that in Hollywood where I live she was a d-list actress, 6th on on the call sheet and she had no job lined up. Her highest income was 500k and she rented an apt. That is an absolutely respectable income and there is nothing wrong with renting an apartment but as a point of fact and considering whether she had motivation to marry up, she most certainly did which by itself is not prooof but in light of all the other evidence and her past history it is compelling.

The stuff he's come out with seems so vengeful. Some of his "revelations" in the book are incredibly petty. I agree 100% with Coleman about the accusation he made about racist comments by a "senior royal". By not naming who it was he threw all of them under the bus. He later made a statement that it wasnt prince Phillip (who had a history of saying racist sounding things in public btw) or the queen, which seems to further reveal just how much animosity he has for the rest of his family. He knows it would be virtually impossible for them to reply to his accusation given the expectations and huge amount of pressure put on them to not respond publicly.

My husband and I are from 2 different races. When I was pregnant I was asked both from his and my family , friends, co workers, almost everyone we met. I was asked in an innocent way, sometimes with sarcasm but it’s normal to be asked what color the baby is gonna be. Harry and Meghan are for sure have some agenda to their claim. Liking M: Now in the beginning me personally was so excited when Meghan became part of the RF but then their Oprah interview opened my eyes to how nasty Meghan is and how whiny Harry is (present too). Overall the public didn’t look into her race why she was hated it is her character that really irritates me even up to now. She’s a very phony individual.

The thing with the royal family is that they are not supposed to live their lives as individuals. They are symbols and they get all the privilege that they have (money and status, real privilege) in trade of their personal life. It's not a good place to be in, I reckon. But you know, we all have our share of hardships. So, they are expected to give in their lives as individuals to embrace their function. That's what Elizabeth II did. And I think that Harry's behaviour is so harshly judged by his family because being a simple normal fallible human is just not an option in the world of British aristocracy. And actually, it seams to me like a faire trade: having to give up your personal freedom, if you are given such wealth and power for free, just by the grace of being born. Real privilege should come with a cost (that's why people saying that calling someone "privileged" is not a slur are wrong: if you call someone "privileged", you expect something from them). But, I get it. I bet a lot of royals would have prefered an other destiny. I guess it's also a symptom of the corruption that inevitably ends up spoiling such organisations. "The Firm" may not be a symbol worthy enough anymore that anyone would want to fiercely embody it. So, here my thoughts about the question.

Singing (while carrying a tune) uses a different part of your brain than talking. That's why the accent disappears. You can hear the accent if the singer is reciting lyrics rather than carrying a tune. Emily Blunt has a stutter and one of her grade school teachers noticed the stutter wasn't present when Emily talked in character voices. Talking, singing, and speaking in voices don't use the same part of the brain.

She was also given a lot of advice by members of the family when she became engaged to Harry (Sophie among others) and was given a dossier that outlined in great detail Royal protocol. Her passport was not taken away because she travelled a great deal during her stay in the Palace. Her narrative is full of proveable falsehoods and her agenda is clear.

Interesting hearing CH apply reason to people lacking it. It’s less gratifying listening to intelligent people talk about topics they don’t have a deep understanding of. But again, my interest is psychological and cultural. They capture a irritating aspect of the zeitgeist. Unfortunately, Coleman seems unaware of her constant lying. It’s tiring to debunk her lies. It’s been done elsewhere but she lies enough that I don’t trust anything she says.

I’m glad Gold did his homework. It’s sad that Coleman didn’t bother to do so this time and just takes Markle’s claims-amply proven to be lies even when this was recorded-as fact. Very disappointing.

I have a strong suspicion that Coleman Hughes has/had a crush on Meghan Markle, It's been years since she came on the scene and anyone with any knowledge of the BRF started to notice her lies and smears. So it was a bit of a surprise to realize that Hughes, who I consider a bright young man, spoke as if he had a soft spot for her. But such is the power of persuasion and influence that MM sought. She is gifted with a charisma and beauty that cannot be denied. It is a pity there is no substance. CH was harsher towards Harry who deserves more compassion. Yes he has shown himself to b a bitter and resentful ingrate after marriage but neither low IQ nor the undeniable trauma of losing a mother at 12 is his fault.

I don't see the point why the royal family would hold a special grudge toward black deadbeats versus any other deadbeat. To me the most racist element is that some people aim to deny other people to have a negative opinion about a person that happens to be from a different race, in particular when that other person has some trace of blackness in them which really I have quite a bit of trouble recognizing in Megan. The reality is that they are simply extreme snobs and that the queen disliked Harry's mother at least as much as she disliked Megan. And Diana was pretty white, so no while it cannot be excluded as a possible factor racism is definitely not the main drive for the royals to reject other people.

i’m curious what coleman hughes opinion is on meghan markle at present, after learning more about how she is and how she conducts herself. i think he is very articulate. and i like how andrew gold calls markle off - i agree with his understanding of her. markle is an arrogant, empty headed person. coleman needs to educate himself more, because he seems to have based his opinion of her from her tv character.

Elvis’s music was a white boy playing black music has been said. It’s not bad music. He didn’t have a lot of support and fell into the hands of a extremely controlling manager. He wasn’t able to develop as an artist. Artists need that.

Elvis made it possible for black singers but people like you just have a go ..Elvis once bought 200 Cadillac cars just to give to fans. Name one other so called celebritity that has or had the generosity of ELVIS .no body does.

I’m a Brit and I strongly believe if Megan was some ditzy white American actress, we would have hated her even more. When we see a mixed young woman on our screens over here, they are generally quite well spoken, intelligent, invariably attractive - normally presenting some expose documentary or something quite interesting. So we reacted with that expectation when when presented with a newbie royal. I think a lot of the “hate” towards Megan is more a sort of an outaged dismay at the disappointment. Maybe that’s racist I don’t know, certainly at her being a so American.. nonwhite, possibly but very much less so

Markle would have been told before exactly what it would be like marrying into the Royal Family (the lack of freedom, the unfair treatment from the press, the obligations etc). In fact there would have been someone who’s job it was to put her off. But she thought she knew better. That’s what it boils down to.

Young people need to stop focusing on what happened in the past and work on making their time in this world of benefit through their personal contributions. What is done is done. Move on. I am so frustrated by the time, energy, and money that is being wasted on things that don't exist, are exaggerated for control and power, are no longer happening, and are dividing rather than bringing peace and solidarity. So much talent and advancements are not being developed due to all this pettiness going on. Focus people, focus!

You can't heal relationships by pretending the past didn't happen when people have deeply hurt other people. And slavery was a wound that pierced souls for generations. It is real because the relationships haven't been healed and it lives in our understanding of each other and who we are and how we got here

@@erin4885 How is that working for us? If that was a solution we'd see things getting better, but that is not happening. If something did not happen to you personally it is a bit shallow to cry about it. Of course, we remember, but to dwell on the past has never brought healing. Ever. Focus on our future, not on the past is the only way forward.
