I explain how the BASIS role might just continue to exist after RISE with SAP.
I take you through some of the tasks a typical BASIS administrator will need to perform in a RISE with SAP subscription, plus I show how to check what is and what is not performed by SAP themselves under a RISE with SAP subscription.

I'm an SAP BASIS admin for 10 years, and this is the first time that I got entertained with an SAP tutorial vid. :D

Good summary. I've been an SAP BASIS Administrator for 25 years and have worked for many large customers. The main part of the job I have really enjoyed is architecting landscapes and getting them working. We have to be highly knowledgeable in multiple OS's, DB's, web servers, networks and security. With RISE, much of this is now transparent to the customer and BASIS Administrators, which in a business sense is good, it's just less 'fun' for us techies and it makes it hard to know how to develop our careers. There will be some customers who cannot use SAP RISE or other cloud-based applications, it will be interesting to see what decisions they take. It's important to have multiple proven 'pillars' in your skill-set - SAP BASIS administration, technical architecture, team management, project management, programming, cloud design, etc. so you can adapt your career path to meet requirements.

Hello, this is what I call a professional video. The content is very tight but with clarity. It starts with the background as what is RISE and then immediately focused on the day to day routine tasks by any BASIS consultant /admins either by a SI or Client side IT support team. Looking forward to more videos. Great work. Keep the bar high for others, who can learn more from this video.

This is my experience of working in an SAP RISE environment for the past 18 months to 2 years. I've raised over 1,000 SR's during this time, for everything from patching to system copies, to asking for 000 access, to having some O/S security patches applied, to adding file system storage. The SLA's are misleading and often unnecessarily lengthy due to the generic nature of the SR templates which causes headaches, especially if you have limited Production outage windows. Having to get buy-in on an eight hour outage for tasks we know take 30-60 minutes is frustrating at best. Not to mention you're not performing those day-to-day technical activities like in years gone by, so when the occasional need for them does come along, there's an element of needing to refresh your knowledge first before completing the task. It's a challenge, that's for sure. And difficult not to look back at the "good old days" of having access to being able to actually maintain what you're accountable for.

In short. You need to understand Basis well enough to log relevant SRs and verify info from SAP ECS and if the job was done. And what is left of Basis hands-on work are the boring day to day stuff.

Even though client has no access to OS or DB or infrastructure , it is still the sap Basis admins are deploying and working on it and working on customer requests. Also I see many client moving out because of this and some issues. I hope it will balance out as most basis admins will work directly or indirectly.

In my experience of migrating environments to RISE, it is a headache to look for the appropriate SR for each satellite system (electronic billing, btp, successfactor, etc.) or client requirement since SAP Rise does not provide you with any SR catalog to review. the concept, additionally it is frustrating not being able to enter the OS to make a change or to be able to enter 000 since for anything an SR is requested

SAP is a SaaS product in SAP RISE, so all this technical and murky SAP Basis stuff needs to be swept under the carpet, out of the sales brochures and into the small contract print. De-facto SAP basis as we knew it will be split into demand & deliver sides. Of course this is sub-optimal from a customer point of view, but as an SAP Basis consultant with 25 years exp. I know which side I will choose.

An after thought Darryl , wondering how basis consultant can investigate issues just having application level access. Core of the issues are investigated on OS or DB level ...By adding another layer of support , raising SR to sap just increases complexity ...We all know how long sap takes to respond to any issue . Have major doubts if this model is sustainable for buisness

superb articulation , slow death for basis guys in the years to come , as SAP RISE has taken the cream of the work we do . Practically it is really very difficult to manage SRs and tickets with SAP , as some one who has been through this approach of handling just the application only for eg a SAP HEC environment i understand what it means to be , we would be only raising SRs over SRs (God knows how they respond 😞) and we have limited only to application handling and would turn us as good for nothing as we would be down and out with out hands on. Since Basis guys are generally good to handle OS/Networking and Databases ourselves ,we can move to AWS/Azure cloud engineers or Database administrators and depends on individuals to take up new paths .. Opportunity. SAP RISE is slow down fall of Basis admins outside (may not be the same for people in SAP - Basis admins or RISE hosting partners - T systems)

So RISE = PaaS ... btw what does your "typical" BASIS admin look like ? - how many tenacles do they have ?! (Do classical BASIS admins feed on "typical" BASIS admins? - as a great shark once said "Fish are friends ...not food".)
@TechCubicleOnSAP

Typically they look like they have had no sleep, always twitching and do not like enclosed spaces full of people. Classical BASIS admins are like your very old grandpa. They always say "back in my day", don't know modern phrases and generally say inappropriate things at the most unfortunate times. Or maybe not. Who knows.

@@TechCubicleOnSAP Hello, Yes, you are right about the subscription or license model subject in the video will be great. I am more interested in understanding how the perpetual vs subscription model including the BOM components. Sometimes, I heard ‘named user,’ like FTE or professional user license. How does the overall cloud subscription model work (compared to on Prem erp)? I am more focused on passing on a clear message to the client about what is changing with the new licencing model offered in SAP S/4 HANA - one using the digital core, along with another application platform like SAP BTP- with data analytics, robotics, integration with 3rd party applications (EDI/IDOC INTERFACES), etc. As a client, it's tough to understand the whole concept of ‘how’ to capture the licence model in this context compared to my current ERP -ECC6. After watching your ‘Fate of Basis’ video in SAP RISE, I was curious if you, with a great understanding of SAP, can remove or cut the clutter in this subject. I know I am asking a lot as this is a big subject area, but you can build this in a structure and deliver it in multiple video series. I appreciate any help you can provide.

@@sambakorea Have a look at my video "What the FUE". It doesn't cover all of what you are asking (BTP credits etc), but it explains how the S/4 license metric is calculated (it talks about an existing ECC system, but still a good explanation I feel). Let me know the gaps in knowledge after and I can include in another video. 👍

I have worked as a TSM in RISE with SAP Implementation for one of the world's biggest IT company. This is a perfect video on how tasks are moving for BASIS folks within RISE. Just that now less would be with "inhouse" person and more with the BASIS guy who works in a partner for SAP. Troubleshooting performance issue will be a big time headache as we all know how consultant from SAP sitting on the other side of support portal work (only objective is to meet SLA). Also understanding the R&R is no child's play. I have worked with it for more than an year and still at times felt lost and had to read the fine lines again and agin to come to an explanatory statement. In short, as I have always felt, SAP just likes to make things complex and let everyone - themselves+customers+ consultants, spinning around it. Mind it though, this is what keeps the money landing in our accounts 😂.
