Built by oilman W.B. Skirvin in 1910, the Skirvin Hotel is believed to be haunted by Skirvin’s ex-lover. I’m Paul on behalf of graveyard shift and this is the story of the mysterious haunting of the Skirvin Hotel, in Oklahoma City.
According to legend, W. B. Skirvin had an affair with one of the hotel maids, who found herself pregnant with Skirvin’s child. In order to avoid a scandal, Skirvin had the maid, known among former employees as “Effie,” Despite giving birth to the child, Effie remained locked away. Losing her sanity, Effie grabbed the infant and threw herself, along with the baby, out of the window.
Over the years, hotel staff alleged they have seen objects move by themselves and have heard strange noises at night. Some versions of the legend depict Effie as "a woman of loose morals,” and male guests have reported being propositioned by a female voice while alone in their rooms. But what is perhaps the most ominous, is the sound of a baby crying in the night, but a baby is nowhere to be seen.
Some of the most notable stories and victims of the haunting, are from NBA players. In 2010, members the New York Knicks blamed their loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder due to a restless night at the Skirvin, and the Chicago Bulls reported hearing strange sounds outside their rooms.
“I don’t think Effie exists,” said Steve Lackmeyer, a reporter for the newspaper The Oklahoman who co-wrote a book, “Skirvin,” about the hotel’s haunting history. According to Lackmeyer, there is no record of any housekeeper who leapt to her death. An explanation for this could be when Effie leapt from the window, her death wasn’t reported in newspapers.
