The Amicus has become my go-to stove for backpacking. My ONLY issue is the piezo crapped out on mine. Soto USA was amazing, sending me a replacement igniter, and when that also died, they just sent me another stove. I also have the Soto Windmaster, which is also an amazing stove. If you are patient with your boiling and cooking, meaning using a lower flame and more time, the Windmaster has been the most efficient stove I've used. Really the lower-flame approach is best for ANY stove, if fuel-usage is a factor. For me it is... I keep track of my average fuel-usage per day, and take a cannister that has enough, plus a day or two emergency reserve. I find that I use about 20 grams per day, so I round that up to 25 to be conservative in my daily-use calculation.

I bought the one without igniter. It’s also without the springs on the pot support. Not use if it’s a different generation of product. Even if the igniter is rubbish I think I’d prefer that version. The one that I have, without igniter, feels e bit more tacky.

Every stove should have 4 pot stands. It's just so much more stable. Sure it adds ever so slight to weight and there's other properties to consider for a stove. But 4 vs 3 make a HUGE difference in stability as tipping point is moved quite a bit away from center compared to the 3 stands.

The one to really compare it to is the Soto Windmaster. The Amicus is the "little brother" so to speak

Finally, we get a review of some great Japanese stove technology. One thing you forgot to mention is that the Soto Amicus is built with a brass Valve & Fittings as opposed to aluminum which strips much easier. The venerable Soto Windmaster is even better in the wind then the Amicus! I've been using the Soto Amicus for years and I've never had a problem.

The Amicus really held it's own. I've been very happy with mine. Great value, too. Curious to see how it stacks against the Soto Stormbreaker. There isn't a good review in English of the Stormbreaker on KZfaq. But do we need another stove review? Yes, yes we do.

Yet another great gear video, Bones. I think the Amicus stove doesn’t have the built in regulator as the windmaster does for cold weather. I wonder how much of a diff it makes?
@jandal8905

The only difference is that the Windmaster will burn more consistently when the gas canister is nearly empty. To be honest, I don't care about this - I prefer to see the flame getting smaller so I know I'm nearly out of gas.

You should compare the deluxe with wind master not the amicus. I have the amicus with toaks 750 along with Optimus wind shield and diy cozy. Lite and can boil faster while cooking real food regardless of windy condition in the desert. Perfect cook set.
@joefrank7159
@joefrank7159 3 жыл бұрын
I just don't understand one thing. If going small and light. Why most stoves can't handle the small cups? Some not even the 750. Make no sense if you need to use a big and heavy pot to put in the small and light stove. This one look good and work well.

Valid question! I always feel that a wider pot will catch more of the heat. Maybe that is the reason?

I arrive at the same conclusion. They're not the same and my newly acquired Amicus (tested today) is definitely taking the place of my Pocket Rocket Deluxe for those dayhikes. It's also replacing my BRS-3000T, which is tiny but scary to use at times as it stutters like a 1940's rocket engine. My gripe with the Deluxe is that it's too tall to fit inside my 650ml pot, the 3 stands are too far apart for some of my minimalist pots and for my 1 cup mokka Bialetti clone. Meanwhile the amicus can fit in my main cooking pot, the 4 stands are more stable indeed but they also cover a bigger range of small gear like a 220ml (dia 65mm), a 350ml (dia 80mm) and that 1 cup bialetti clone (just 150gr and a diameter of 65mm at the base). I'll keep the Deluxe for bigger pots, like those 11cm wide ones that can take a larger canister. Thanks for the advice and all your videos because they really helped me selecting a great stove.
@davemacdonald7928
@davemacdonald7928 3 жыл бұрын
But... you neglected to mention that the pocket rocket deluxe has a preasure regulator. Hence the higher cost but better fuel use when the canister gets low. I'd like to see a test that determines the advantage of that
@jandal8905

I don't think fuel efficiency is any better with a pressure regulator. It just means the flame stays the same size for longer before it peters out.

I was all set to get the Amicus cook set (with the 2-piece nesting pot/lid) when I caught the Windmaster on sale for the same price about this time last year. I agree; four pot stands are better than three. I'm noticing less of these little hiking cooking gadgets are coming packaged in hard cases. Almost everything comes in a pouch. I wanted a windscreen packaged in a hard case which doubled the cost. I wonder if this covid thing has caused a shortage in that plastic?
