We live in the mountains outside of Denver and have a stock 94 with about 165k miles. Because of the low mpg (around 15) it can't be a daily driver. We use it for commuting when the snow gets deep, Costco shopping, driving around Colorado, and picking up in-laws at DIA. Ours has the cloth seats with manual controls so they are still working and in very good condition. I like it because it feels more sporty than later Land Cruisers. It isn't fast but it doesn't matter. That is part of its charm.

Currently have 4 LandCruisers, and a Tundra. They're the 1965 LandCruiser LV, 1967 FJ40, 1971 FJ40, and my built 1997 LX 450. All factory original. Pretty much translates into me being a Cruiser nerd. For instance, these had 215 ponies with 275 torques on the FZJ models (1993 - 1997), 155 ponies and 225 torques with the earlier FJ80 (1991 - 1992). On my Lexus LX 450 (the same as the 80 series), I blew a head gasket (which is common around 200k miles) and that ended up with a new short block from Toyota. All in all, cost more than a new base Tundra. It's triple locked from the factory, and it being the Lexus model, has all the options. They are bomb proof, no doubt. The factory bronze tinted glass is a beautiful addition to them.

My son and myself both had 80’s. We had so much fun with them. Unfortunately my head gasket went and possibly the head as well. At the same time my sons 80 got T boned so we did a complete heart transplant. He now has my 80 with his heart in it. I went and bought a 100 series, which goes well but, damn I miss my 80. His one is so good to drive, so much smoother than the 100 and his 6 nearly matches the power of my 8. The 80 is so easy to work on and under. I put that beast through hell and she never gave up. Buying a 4x4 was the best decision I ever made. It allowed us to have a common interest and bond even more. Camping, 4x4 ing, hunting & fishing. So many great memories and all due to buying an 80. Can’t do that with a sedan. Long live the 80.

A couple of notes. It was the last solid axle landcruiser in the US, but the subsequent 100 series was also available elsewhere with a solid axle - called the 105. One problem I see is that the aircon receiver is hanging out under the bumper. You will damage it if you use the clearance the bullbar has. You can relocate it or do what I can did - build a strong guard bolted to the chassis. As to speed, yes its happy to cruise @ 80, but have maxed mine out a few times. It gets up to 110 mph if you have enough empty straight road. But that is with an un-lifted car on standard wheels, manual transmission & part time 4x4. Maybe because its a manual I don't find towing a real problem. I tow a 3300lb trailer which is about the same width & height as the car. On normal roads I can maintain my target speed of between 60 & 70 mph. Although I have to sometimes have to drop to 4th (I live & 5700'). On mountain passes I have to row it with the gear lever, but I can stay close to the speed limit.

@@prawnshop4573 Really?.Mine have never leaked grease .What I do have is a slight ooze of oil., I did replace the seals (OEM), but it still leaks. @@DaciaProject have you not seen the vehicles roaming America? We have no "engineer" approval for modifications. We don't even have any real annual safety inspections on private vehicles. Putting 40s on a Land Cruiser is nothing as the axles are full floating heavy duty units capable of laughing off 40s. There's Jeeps running around on even bigger tires with weak Dana 35 axles. California for example requires a bi annual emissions inspection and that is all. If you register a vehicle from another state in California, it must pass a very simple "Brake & Light" inspection which is exactly what it sounds like. All lights and brake system should pass one time only.

I prefer the v8 4runner or a gx v8. Really the only reason to get one of these is the sfa and its a cruiser.

The factory lockers blow. You have to drive snake patterns for miles to get them to engage and replacing them costs the same as new ARB air lockers. Full time locked or LSD in the back will fishtail, click and mess up handling in normal conditions, I’d air lock for sure.

Ditch the petrol motor and put in a 1HDT on 20 pounds of boost, stick a manual gearbox into it with a VDJ79 gearbox and you will fall in love.

Prob just as well if you don't know what you are doing, as long as you have the dosh to pay someone who does. Back in the 80 & '90's I knew my way around a car, enough to service it, change a gearbox etc, but these days they are too complicated to work on, at least for my brain cell :) Best wishes...

Nice Land Cruiser, I like the wrap. I have a 1997 Lx 450 on 33" tires with a 2 1/2" lift also, very capable vehicle. Thinking about selling it soon. What do you think it's worth?

Wow 3,000 bucks for the wrap? Very expensive to have it done in the US… in Indonesia, for big SUV like VX80 probably its gonna cost around 1,000USD .. however, the price for a good condition 1996 VX80 is around USD30K - USD35K 😁

Four link rear end, three link front end from the factory, you can fit 35s with a mild 2-inch lift and even the "unlocked" ones will get you through most obstacles you'd find on the average trail. Where the Land Cruisers shine is how they are built. Climb under an 80 and start measuring the diameters and thicknesses of suspension components, frame, etc. and you'll begin to understand that aside from a few weaknesses that are easy to correct, there isn't much that can stop a TLC. The A44xx transmissions, while a little awkward (and a performance limiter, IMO) are built for buses and extremely stout. The 1FZ is a high revving masterpiece of an engine. There's a reason that there are 300K, 500K, and 1M mile benchmarks for these trucks. Pound for pound the 80 Series is the best 4x4 ever built.e
