The best car in history when it comes to reliability and efficiency. The only problem with the car is drinking. The car is a gas hog. I love the old guy very much. I’m not selling him because he’s family.

As an 80 series owner, I push mine to as many limits as I can. I have 263,000 miles on mine and she has never skipped a beat. The only issue I’ve ever had was that it used to over heat from time to time, but it turns out I just had a leaking radiator. It has since been fixed and no other issues have arisen. Greatest car I’ve ever owned and I’m proud to just say I have one.

You have a very capable and fine looking rig there, your investment has certainly paid off! I love it! Back in the late 90's, I brought both my new born baby girls home from the hospital for the very first time. Since then I have built the 1fz 80 into a serious off road rig and I love it like a family member to this day. Here's to the 80, one of the best off road trucks ever built by Toyota!

162,000 miles (260,000km) on my LandCruiser. 1995, and the best part of it is what the USA didn't get. The "multivalve" 1HD-FT engine. For the uninitiated, a 4.2lt straight 6cyl turbo diesel. Direct injection but all mechanical, it'll run with no alternator. Gets about 18mpg on average. H151 5 speed manual. I've added bullbar, brush bars, rock sliders, a 12,000lb winch with synthetic rope. A 2" lift with King springs and Bilstein shocks and ARB front and rear air lockers.

I'm lucky as I've ended up with an 80 and a 100. The 100 is my daily and the 80 is converted to my trip truck. It's a 97 so has the later engine, but still no race car. However, I just got back from a 7500 mile trip this summer and it didn't skip a beat. Did some pretty decent trails down to campsites that only the locals knew about, and I wouldn't have wanted to be in the hundo. Not because it couldn't do it, because I don't mind the pinstripes on the 80. Oh, and the gas mileage, we did out trip right as gas peaked, and I spent about $2200 in gas for the trip. I tell myself it's a wash since I slept in the rig every night but one. But yeah, they drink mucho gasoline.

I splurged when I was in my early 20s and bought a 97 model back in 1999 or 2000 and loved it (back when my car sales career first started taking off and started making killer money) . my only problem with it was I am 6ft. 4in and I never had adequate legroom and the gearshift dug into my knee so uncomfortable on long trips. Had the inline 6cly. it was a beast and would go anywhere. I wouldn't mind buying another one but not for a everyday driver to add to my collection. Just want one all stock that has been taken care off and not ran thru the mud which is hard to find.

Beautiful truck. I really dig those wheels! As a fellow 3FE 80 owner; double check that that alternator fits your rig. I believe only 90 amp alternators with the internal fans are now available, and some modifications are necessary to fit them.

Had a ‘97 for a few years. It was cool, but still slow and terrible gas mileage. My only off-road excursions were on dirt fire roads, so nothing too challenging. It didn’t make a ton of sense as a daily.

The 80 is my favorite. I like the flared fenders and off road ability. In 94 we had one on the lot I worked at in Massachusetts for $55k. I asked my boss who was going to buy it as we weren't in a wealthy area. It was sold within a week to a dealership in Dallas. They were that hard to find. However, considering the resale, I would buy the LR3/LR4 in the background of this video for off roading and beating it up.

I bought mines looking for a snow duty rig as I was an essential worker (even before pandemic lol) the more I toyed with it the more it grew on me. Not knowing 6 years ago how sought out they are. Scored well and got rear and front lockers, started off fixing old leaks and hoses then accessories. Trans starting to jump from 1st to 2nd but at 310,000 miles its stil a solid rig.

The 1fzfe is 212 hp and 275 lb torque. The 3fe in this video is 155hp and 220 lb torque so im not sure why he said it has more torque and is better offroad than the 93-97 80 series? I still like the engine tho and would own one but it cant compare to my 97, just different.

I have a 1995 Ford F250 4X4 that is one extremely tough truck. I have two third generation 4Runner 4X4's that are exceptional, rugged, reliable and fun. I have a 1996 Lexus LX450 and she is the QUEEN. It is a legendary classic. There is something that can be said for triple lock. I don't know why xxx isn't standard on all 4X4's.

Does the FJ80 really have more torque that the FZJ80? I owned a '92 and now drive a triple locked '97, apart from the faster speed on pavement, I don't feel any difference on the trail, in terms of torque. So, that's interesting to know.

I've been daily driving my 92 80 series for over 15 years. Salt is eating it.Thats about it. I don't care. Just turned 200 K miles last month. Purrs like a tank.

Nice 80, too bad it is missing the magic dial on the left side of the dash... My LX450 just turned 250k and I love it. Poured many dollars in parts into it though over the past 10 years. My biggest gripe is the engine. It would be fine if it retained the same shitty MPG but had a lot of power, or same shitty power but was way more efficient. But no.

They did make a 105 series, which was the 100 with a solid front axle. But I think you would have to import that one. They have them in Australia and Africa. It's kind of the best of both worlds.

They are hella slow and inefficient; put some 37s and you're slow cookin for sure. Thinking about making a custom sticker for my rear windshield that says, "I'm VERY slow, please be patient," for my 80 lol

This is a nice rig, but 9 mpg on the highway?? People keep justifying Toyota fuel mileage in vehicles such as this, and the 5.7 trucks and SUVs. It’s NOT acceptable, definitely is not a good thing and kills one of the requirements if a great Overlander and that is range! In the interest of mythical claims of reliability they are willing to overlook a glaringly serious failure. I agree they are likely the most reliable out there, but they are not infallible. I learned that the hard way, TWICE, in a 2014 Tundra TRD Off-road double cab I had, left me in a mountainside twice, which was more than inconvenient because we were trying to outrun a serious storm the second time. I just left it there hoping it would get caught up in an avalanche!! 😂😂. No such luck!! Bought it as a dream truck,,,, had the dream for years, but I sold it 2 years later as a turd. It stranded me twice in the city as well. The truck was babied as it was my personal truck, dream truck at one time, not one of my many work trucks. I still don’t mind the Tacoma, but if it has the 5.7, or any of the fuel guzzling 6 cylinders (except the diesels) I don’t want it. They still can, and do, break down, not unlike anything else on the road. The extra $$$ you shell out up front can be put into proper maintenance of almost, not quite, but almost any other brand and get solid reliability as well. The difference in reliability, especially nowadays, doesn’t entirely justify the costs up front as well as the long term costs of ownership. Just do a little research before discounting other models of other brands vs the same competitor from Toyota. It’s not always the best choice. Mileage and range aside, the Land Cruiser is a beautiful vehicle with some extremely high capabilities off-road. They are definitely reliable as well, just not the only reliable brand.
