I was raised in the UMC and the associate/youth pastor we had when I was going through confirmation would always pray, "Our Father or Mother...." This would have been late 1970s and/or early 1980s, so this has been creeping into the UMC for along time. Even at that young age, I knew that was wrong and only prayed as Jesus taught us. Thankfully, I am now in a Bible-teaching, Bible- believing church.

I find it fascinating that they demand everyone to respect everyone else's pronoun preference... except God's. God obviously revealed to us He is a He/Him, but they won't respect THAT pronoun preference? Hypocrites...

My daughter and I were wondering why my mother said something about Hindus and Muslims being in heaven the other day until I saw your video about the Hindu deity on stage. I didn't know about this stuff at the time, but I said to her, "Mom there will be people from every tribe, tongue and nation in heaven but only if they believe in the biblical Lord Jesus Christ. From 3:50-5:15 sounds like vice principals at the inner city middle school I taught at telling the 11-15 year olds how to behave with each other at school. For this to be adults, at a church leaders gathering is mind boggling for me to hear.

The UMC has their Book Of Discipline, the Catholic Church has their Catachism. We have the BIBLE! We don't need any denominations own doctrinal books. The Bible teaches we are NOT to add or take away from God's Word!

The UMC doesn't have to come up with its own replacements of the Lord's Prayer and the Apostles' Creed. Two United Church of Christ ministers have already written them. One is "the Lord's Prayer for Transgender Awareness" by Kim Sorrells and the other is the "Sparkle Creed" by Rachel Small-Stokes.

Many Methodist churches have disaffiliated from the UMC and either joined the Global Methodist Church or gone independent. My church voted, by a large margin, to go with Global.

Yesterday, we had a Mother's Day sermon. We prayed the Lord's Prayer, as it was written by Henry VIII. (I learned that from watching "The Tudors.") But, my church had a seminary intern back in the 1970s who believed that God is a father for men, and a mother for women. I could hear his wife saying, "Our Mother, who art..." The problem with that is many women I know are closer to their fathers than their mothers. I'll be the first to say that I act more like my mother than my father.

Changing the Lord’s Prayer; the words of institution for baptism; Jesus’ many references to the Father are certainly on the to-do list. It’s already happening in other mainline denominations. There is no such thing as a progressive Christian; for the progressive loves the world and the things of the world (including themselves) and have not the Father.

I am not a UMC member, I am a Northern Ireland Methodist and would dissociate from their doctrine. However, would take issue on one point- John Wesley did NOT teach sinless perfection. His use of the word perfect had, for him, a different nuance.

Dear friend, You do not understand John Wesley's beliefs regarding sanctification and perfection. Wesley did not believe that perfection meant one would not sin. He simply meant that a person could be perfected in love, and have Christ-like love for God and neighbor. I am an ordained elder in the UMC. I am thoroughly versed in Wesleyan theology. The UMC deserves condemnation for the radical, ungodly shift in sexual ethics. I will be separating from the UMC soon. But please do not misrepresent Rev. Wesley and his beliefs.

The code of conduct was for the plenary sessions of general conference, not for the whole church for all of time. You mentioned them acknowledging diversity as a reflection of liberal identity. This isn’t what they were doing. This is a global gathering made up of handfuls of people from different countries and regions in those countries all across the globe. There is going to be a presence of differing opinions. They are just asking people be respectful. You were upset with them suggesting we shouldn’t touch someone without permission? Really? The apostle Paul’s holy kiss greeting is almost definitely not meant to just be a startling kiss unexpected. That’s literal sexual harassment. I should also ask, do you kiss people when you meet them actually? Or are you just trying to prove to people you memorized scripture? The scripture you memorized isn’t relevant for this discussion. You misquoted the female speaker right after her sentence ended. She said “including avoiding exclusively male language for God.” And you said “including avoiding male language for God.” These mean two very different things. Many men and women have been harmed by their fathers and we recognize that while they cannot yet connect to the image of God as a father because of their trauma, they may connect to God as non gendered names such as creator, redeemer, or sustainer. Why is it a problem to speak about God in a way that reaches these people? The request to avoid exclusively male language is a request to use other titles in addition to Father or other male words like Lord. We still worship God the Father of Jesus Christ. We just recognize that God responds to other names also. As does the Bible which calls him Yahweh, Elohim, Adonai, etc. We literally use the Lord’s Prayer every single time communion is shared in the United Methodist church.
