xTool is never content to sit idle. They have recently introduced the xTool F1 Ultra, which is a 20W fiber laser combined with a 20W diode laser. This new powerhouse, provides the next evolution in laser technology for home and small business.
In this video, I'll walk through some of the key features of this new fiber laser and show some examples of it's capabilities.

While it is true that this fiber laser has a 220 by 220 work area while others typically have a smaller area (110 by 110). It is important to note that the larger the work area, the larger the laser point will be. So in having a larger work area you are lowering the lines per inch and thus your resolution. But there is a second advantage to having a larger working area and that is that the range that the laser is in focus vertically is greater the larger the work area. This is because the lens is positioned further away and doesn't have to bend the light as much as it would for a small work area.
@SteveMakesEverything

I'm on the fence about the larger area. It's certainly nice to have, but there are times when you want to confine all of the laser power to a smaller area in order to increase the energy density into a smaller area. My Commarker B4 20W has both100mm and 200mm lenses and I always use the smaller one because most things that I do on a fiber laser are smaller engravings.

Hi all, I have a question. I have never used a laser engraving machine and would need it to engrave letters to empty computer keyboards (it has no letters on it, so just blank keys). Material is usually plastic (don't know what kind of plastic). My engraver uses a laser but don't know what kind and results are great. Now I would like to start doing this on my own, so as a NOOB, my questions to you experts are. Is it complicated to do such engraving? Will I learn it quick and do I need to know how to use any additional software? As i looked Xtool F1 Ultra would be suitable for this? Thank you!
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything Ай бұрын
My reply got lost so here it is again. The F1 Ultra might be overkill if this is all you do with your laser. The keys on a keyboard are typically ABS or Polystyrene and either should engrave with pretty much any laser - even something like a 5W diode laser. You'll have to play with the settings of course. If you are using an xTool laser then no additional software is required. xTool provides XCS for free and it works well. If you are using others lasers, you might have to buy a copy of Lightburn, but it's priced reasonably.

@@SteveMakesEverything Thank you so much. Well I would like the F1 ultra as I hope in time I will be ablet to do a lot more engraving. Just 2 more questions please. Would you recommend to use the conveyor belt for engraving the keyboards as I will need to move them 2x to engrave the whole keyboard without the conveyor? And if I understand correctly, it should be quite easy to set up the laser for engraving letters on different type of keyboards?

Amazing stuff! But the batch process just confused me. It looks like the engraving was totally misaligned (rotated) on the wooden batches. Just camera angle? Is it really usable like throwing the stuff in the belt like advertised?
@SteveMakesEverything

Some was camera angle, but I did have two with alignment issues that I’ve passed on to Xtool. They are working on this and it may already be fixed but I haven’t checked yet.

I guess that the diode laser is not the best option for cutting polyester fabric, but can it be doen at very low speed? Maybe with dual at the same time?
@SteveMakesEverything

I’ve never cut polyester so I can’t help much, but the diode laser would be your only choice. Btw you can’t run both lasers at the same time.

Hi Steve! Just found your channel and finding it really informative! Thank you! I’m debating between the F1 ultra and the S1 was wondering if you (or anyone else!) is able to help me in deciding please?! I want to use it to engrave business cards both metal and plastic and potentially acrylic items too, and thoughts? F1 and the conveyor belt? Or the S1? Thank you
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything Ай бұрын
Either laser will engrave cards. You could use the slide on the F1 or the S1. Either way you will need a jig if you want to do multiple cards as a batch. The S1 is more versatile but less portable than the F1, but the F1 can engrave more types of metal

@@brotherlybbert Unfortunately most of these appear to be cheap things made from old scrap metal, but you can try them. The copper ones should be avoided because when I tried one with the F1 Ultra, it just got black and crusty (xTool warned me that this would happen, though.). You can try the ones here (limitlesssolutions.org.uk/) though I haven't used them. They keep coming up in our weekly livestream and appear to be pretty capable.

I have to say that more examples and less face time would have been nicer. You obviously did some tests but they had very little screen time. Compared to some of the other reviews I saw at the same time, this was a little disappointing, especially considering yours are usually pretty good.

Noted, but I didn't see a point in making the same video everyone else is going to make-especially with beta hardware and software. Instead, I'll do a more focused video in the next few weeks to show what you can actually do with this laser in the real world.

Is the conveyor more valuable than the slide extension? The slide extension is totally underwhelming. The slow speed of slide is horrible. I wish they would change the firmware to advance the slide 4 inches at a time and let the super fast galvo head fly, then repeat.
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything 2 ай бұрын
Unless you are doing some sort of volume engraving, or plan to engrave projects that are larger than 220mms, then the conveyor is probably not necessary. As far as movement, they actually do move some measured distance and then stop to look at the workspace to see if there is anything there to engrave. It's reasonably intelligent.

Well this was pretty low effort. I guess you just needed to pump out a video for the free machine.
@Firstleaker
@Firstleaker 2 ай бұрын
100% definitely seems that way. Totally rushed and slapped together. Even the conveyor was low effort. Couldn’t even spend the extra 10 min to engrave the welcome sign on the conveyor. Instead a simple 1 min outline of the word welcome on the conveyor and called it a day. I don’t expect our comments to last long. Typically, anything negative gets removed or hidden.

@@LollipopWoodworksNWA - I disagree, I think xTool has definitely pushed the industry in the fiber category after this release. The only advancements we have seen from the fiber industry is power. The Ultra will only make these other companies wake up, and start to develop better and more capable technologies. I have watched every review, and it seems that the reviewers got pre released machines and software. However, most were still able to overcome these obstacles and put out well informed videos. I have only seen one video with low effort, this one! There is a new person with only 300ish subs that had a 10min video that was more informative than this.
@SteveMakesEverything

You couldn't be more wrong about this statement. If this machine was not worthy I'd be telling you. As xTool can tell you, I've poked a few hornet nests with them on some of their other products in the past. While I think there is much more that xTool can exploit in the F1 Ultra, it is far from underwhelming. My only real "complaint" would be that they had an opportunity to release a fiber laser with more than 20W and didn't. I do see something like an F1 Ultra Pro looming to address this.
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything 2 ай бұрын
LOL, if you think I'm about to delete your comments you'd also be wrong about that. Unless you are verbally assaulting someone or spreading complete lies, your comments will live on. You do understand that this is my channel, not xTool's, right? If you have specific issues with this laser, then I'd certainly encourage you to connect with xTool and provide feedback. Having said this, the way I understand your comment is that your big complaint is that I did a welcome sign with an outline rather than an engrave. If this is your real issue, let me know and I'll be happy to post an engraved welcome sign just for you. But if you think this is going to look different than any other diode laser, you'll be even more disappointed than you are now. I will cover the conveyor in more detail in another video and I'll be sure to fully engrave everything, so you know it works.😉

I just finished watching all the other reviews. Then your video came up! Thumbnail says Wow! Then you lead with, “I have been testing for a while!”, and how excited you were. I am sorry, but you received an almost $5,000 machine, and you practically covered nothing. With only 4 or 5 engravings. There is no way that lion coin only took 29min. Those 3D engravings take hours. Hope your “possible” future video is better. Been a long time subscriber, just disappointed in a low effort video.

You are right it is a 5k laser and a machine of this price range needs to be put to the test properly, it's expensive. Doing a generic power grid test isn't extensive testing of a product. Let Steve do his thing. Honest reviews for the people!!! It is a solid machine by the looks of it. Combining AI and a lot of new features that will need to be improved upon with updates.

Awesome! Yes, being a bit more expensive is an advantage because far fewer people will own them and that creates opportunity to do projects that a diode laser user can’t do - this means higher margins.
