Mike Bartlett's play "King Charles III" imagined what the future of the British monarchy would look like, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Today, one year exactly after the Queen's passing, Zach Barr (they/them) returns to the play, to judge how its message and motives have evolved, as the public view of the royals changes. Does it have a future? And does the real life King at its center?

Ooh, I wonder if you could you restage it in Elizabethan costume, as if it *is* one of Shakespeare's histories? It would end up seeming less like a commentary on the monarchy and more like a commentary on history plays, right?

Or maybe 17th century style costume, really highlight the similarities between Charles I and Charles III.

My prediction is they change the role of jess to Meghan but still keep the beats of the play, maybe age it up to 2023. And someone will do a play using prince harry’s book ‘spare’.

The bbc play was one of the best things I saw in college. I don’t really think it matters if the play continues, I think some pieces of media are better left alone and dormant in their own time and space.

That play sounds fascinating and it seems like it’s aged pretty well. Not being super familiar with the monarchy myself, Harry marrying a commoner and leaving the monarchy seems prescient. I don’t think the real Charles is going to be as interesting as his fictional version.

I think the best staging is as an alternate modern history, since it's so close and so far. Like make some dress or set choices that make it obvious it's not modern reality
