7:59 Actually, Penzance did have a pirate problem in the past, about a century before the operetta was written. Barbary piracy (slavers) in particular. But at the time of the writing, yes it was quite respectable.

I own three copies of the Pirates of Penzance movie, and have seen it at least 20 times. I recommend it to anyone who wants to try Gilbert and Sullivan for the first time. I tell them that G&S is the immediate predecessor to the modern day musical, halfway between opera and musical, and that's even more obvious with the Joseph Papp version.

I’m a simple guy. I first saw Randy in Melbourne around 2010 at a comedy festival. Funny. Insightful. Yeah, good mate. Then started watching him on KZfaq. For me, Randy is simply the physical expression of the guy behind it that is, I’ve assumed, more comfortable being behind the curtain than in front. When Randy espouses philosophies, ethics, insights about the human condition, they’re simply those of the shy guy we don’t see. If I had a stubby with the guy, I’d already feel I know him through the acts. I don’t care about the puppet; that’s no more or less a projection than what everyone else does to present themselves to others. With maybe a little bit more fear of Velcro.

I definitely want to watch the in-depth take on the development of Little Women, which is a better show than I think it has any right to be. What depresses me about the Gatsbys is the clear reliance on IP. Like, would Gatsby musicalize well? Yeah! But Gatsby has been adapted ENOUGH times by people who misunderstand the novel. I dunno. Better write my own.

Fantastic video!! I first saw the Australian 1994 version on video when I was young and loved it. Jon English was a perfect Pirate King, and I loved the interactions with the conductor and musicians. Only recently have I rewatched it, and discovered the 1980 version and realised many of the comedic queues and staging of the Australian version were taken from the 80s version. Loved your breakdown of it all!

I saw Randy live last week in the UK. Managed to spot and meet 'Gordon Shumway' out in the real world before the show and shake his hand. Lovely guy. And in the club, the lights go out and Randy pops up. Mo preamble or explanation. Really well done.

Thanks for this breakdown! I first saw Pirates as a high school production, and then watched the Papp's movie version. I knew it was an operetta when it premiered and is now produced as a musical, but I had no idea that it all happened with such a bang because of that 1980 production! It's one of my favorite stage shows, so in a way I'm grateful that mayor cut the Shakespeare in the Park funding 😂

I am literally standing in the lobby after seeing Shrek Jr and I was literally so excited that I knew to listen for the sleigh bells. They did say snow, and did the bells.i imagine that is since the whole score is pre recorded, the bells pose no problem.

I am confused. Didn't he start off by saying that he would NOT use the guys real name, and then immediately go into a history of the guys origins as the puppeteer, both saying and displaying the name in text on screen with an interviewer? Did I miss something?

Choosing to pursue spiritual development or not is a fundamental right for every individual. No one should be coerced into this decision, nor should anyone be pressured to abstain from it, as it is a personal choice protected by the First Amendment which is why America is great!

I am not very knowledgeable about their history, nor am i black, but it seems silly to say that her husband, who was involved in civil rights himself, might have been unqualified to work on this musical becayse he was not black. Weird that they couldnt find a black writer presumably amoung their freinds and relations but i think the musical speaks for itself.

Quite enjoyed your analysis and presentation. Much food for thought. However, the unnecessary piano music behind much of the last 3 sections was so loud and intrusive that I had trouble watching to the end. Can you dial that back at all, at this point?
