Is There Any Use For This $45 Server I Bought From College? (Dell PowerEdge 2950 in 2020)

I found a website where schools, police stations, and other businesses auction off their old stuff and found an old decommissioned server and couldn't pass it up. I was able to buy this Dell PowerEdge 2950 with 2 Xeon 5450's for only $45 and it works perfectly...The only thing missing is an Operating System so let's take a look at the hardware and get it up and running!
Wisconsinsurplus.com is the website where I participate in these auctions online, I stumbled upon this website as I was searching for a cheap way to find Optiplex computers to flip. It may be worth it for you to take a look or ask your local colleges around you if they sell any of their old stuff online or even just straight from the school. I don't know exactly how much this is worth but for $45 I feel like that's a pretty good deal on a PowerEdge 2950 even just to learn about Server operating systems.

dude, don't worry about the friggin furnace already! we can barely hear it.. your mics are good and the audio is clear. - everyone knows that most YT videos aren't shot in studios. chill with the furnace bro... maybe introduce Furnace (Furn to his friends) to the audience since he's sometimes working in the background. 😳

That's facts man I was thinking about giving Furn a spot in a video but he keeps budding in all rude, if he'd ask nice I might make him a cohost 🙄

These things were built like absolute tanks. Total workhorse that won't let you down. I just finally upgraded from one about 4 years ago. It still works, but it's just too slow and power hungry when much better used servers can be had for a few hundred dollars now.

Even his laundry room is decked out that he can do laundry and aid skynet from terminator in taking over the world. Yet with all the all the computers and clothe washing devices he still can afford to pay bills and have a funance in a laundry room. The DVD drive is REALLY useful, rip it out and install an SSD in its place ;) I resistor modded the fans in my PE2950 to make it less loud. I wrote a bash script to turn down the RPM of the fans on my R710 using ipmi, if I get a chance I'll fire up the PE2950 and see if it works on than as well.

Got to always leave ok at power to usage ratio. Those things ate a tone of power. If your going to run 24/7 and need more resources lol ok into something like an r720+ more resource /usage to power ratio if doing say an esxi env. Then you can duplicate any lab setup you want. But if your just learning and not going to leave 24/7 on it’s fine.

hi there ! I try to repair some pc in my town in Venezuela and a friend brought me this thing, he want to use it like a normal pc and I have to work in it 2 days to run windows 7, first time working with servers but works pretty nice and fast, with a ssd should work even better

The reason it's so loud is its lack of lid witch means all the fans go full blast when on the fans will still start on full blast but slow down once booted

I used my PowerEdge 2950 Win Ser 2012, XEON E5430, 32GB Ram, 4X 1TB drives Nvidia GT720 2GB Ram, Wi-Fi 5GHz. I used mine for online gaming and data backup. Its very fast, plus the Nvidia card helps. I shut it down a while ago, but once in a while I turn it on, to play a game or two. But, it is very loud.. I know I can mod the fans and make it quieter... maybe one day..

You might like to know that if you search around, there are mods for the 2950 to make it quieter. For example: www.ratzblog.com/2014/08/reducing-dell-poweredge-pe-295029002800.html I've not flashed the BMC yet but I have verified the noise reduction is as substantial as the dB meters show. There are other ways like swapping the fans out with quieter ones, but this one suited me best.

@@YourPersonalGeek Update time: I managed to sucessfully flash the BMC following the guide above. It is accurate even to this day, but here are a couple of gotchas that will save you some headaches: - CentOS 6.4 Live CD will do fine (no need for the DVDs) - if you have no mouse, ctrl + alt + F2 on the desktop => login is root, no password, download: vault.centos.org/6.4/isos/x86_64/. - If you use Ventoy to create a bootable USB stick (like I did), make sure to use the GPT partition table (can pick that in Option -> GPT), it will not boot if you use MBR. Also it'll show up as a harddrive in your F11 Boot menu rather than the USB-stick it is. If you don't know Ventoy: It basically puts a bootloader on your USB-stick, after that, whatever ISO you throw onto the stick, it'll just boot it. So no more need to reformat your USB-stick for every distro/OS. - CentOS 6.4 is EOL sinc nov. 2020, so you'll have to change all the repo urls using the following steps: -- 1. vi /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo -- 2. Disable all the mirrorlists by putting a # in front of them -- 3. Enable all the baseUrls by removing the # in front of them -- 4. Update the baseUrls to the CentOS vault. Change the first bit to vault.centos.org/6.4/, leaving the os/centosplus/extras etc. intact (eg. you get vault.centos.org/6.4/os/$basearch) (I used http instead of https, both /should/ work). If you need an example, check out: forums.cpanel.net/threads/yumrepo-error-and-cannot-find-valid-baseurl.682465/post-2805617 - Don't run yum update before installing the ipmi tools, it'll try update the repos AND upgrade your system (unlike apt update, which only updates repos), which will run out of disk space and you'll have to start over. Instead run yum check-update to /just/ update the repo list. - I didn't manage to get the wget command to download the python script to work, even after fixing the quotes => I ended up setting up a http server on a diff machine in my network and downloading it from there - When opening the firmware for modification, a lot of text will scroll over your screen at first, this is normal (freaked me out a little) - When flashing the actual firmware, you need to set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH as described, quick glance the path didn't seem to be present on my machine (there was also a path not found message) => Everything still worked just fine Last but not least: the Dell website for firmware for these models is horrible. It does not list the latest firmware correctly, even when you entering your service tag (it actually doesn't list the BMC at all). I suggest you google "Dell BMC Firmware poweredge 2950" along with the version number you already have. Once you're on the download page, check the "Compatible Systems" at the bottom to make sure you've landed on the right page. I suggest keeping the one you have, or walking it to the latest version first along with the BIOS and the Drac (as forums don't recommend flashing to the latest in 1 go). In my case I ended up flashing 2.50 which was already present on my machine (www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=4nnng&oscode=lnux&productcode=poweredge-2950) Edit: It turns out the 2nd server I was patching was pretty far behind on firmware versions, kinda ignored the advice on walking the versions, flashed BIOS straight from 2.0.1 to 2.7.0 and the BMC from 1.77 to 2.50, worked just fine. If you run into dependency installing libxml2.i686 on CentOS 6.4 in order to flash your bios: run yum update libxml2, then run the yum install again, it'll work.

Just bought 2 Dell PowerEdge R300 blades each with a Windows 2008 server license & 2 750GB HDDs; Memory DDR2 at 667 or 800 Mhz. 2 psu each. Cost £1. But they also cost me £23 & a morning just to get here; since there was no postage. It was an accident. I bid £1 on ebay (so that afterward I'd know what they actually sold for). The O/S is wiped, but I have the Windows 2008 server stickers. Not yet booted them as they seem to have some kind ot remote control boot ?? I also have another Dell server to collect, which also cost £1; the other one is more modern - only about 10 years old. The 2 blades are 15 years old.

Yep. The 2950 has a lid switch that detects if the cover is removed and will ramp up the fans at full speed to compensate for the disturbed airflow since the air will most likely not reach the components beyond the CPU heatsinks when the cover is off.
