With war waging in Europe between Russia and Ukraine, and in the Holy Land between Israel and Hamas, the evils of war are all around us. But war seems to go against Christianity and the Fifth Commandment, “Thou shall not kill.” Father Chris Alar, MIC, explains whether war can ever be justified in the eyes of the Church. Then hear the amazing story of Robert Gannon, who experienced the traumas and tragedies of war, but also the difficulty of living at home before and after.
Watch Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, and the Marian Fathers and Brothers from the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy on our weekly show, "Living Divine Mercy," airing on EWTN every Wednesday at 6:30 pm EST, with an encore presentation on Mondays at 9:00 am EST. Through teaching segments, Bible and St. Faustina Diary excerpts, as well as real-life examples of people who are living Divine Mercy in their lives, you will learn why Jesus said Divine Mercy is mankind's last hope of salvation! Episode 122: Is There Such a Thing as a Just War?

What an incredible life Robert Gannon has lived. After an entire lifetime of abuse and rejection and PTSD post Vietnam and generational alcoholism, he was still open to God’s grace when he went to adoration, and that made all the difference for him. That’s amazing. There is something so powerful for me when I go to adoration. It is not as readily available here, only once a week, after Mass on Fridays, (and several hours on First Fridays)but I do try to make a conscious effort to spend quiet time in the Church, even when the Holy Eucharist is in repose. Thank you for this important episode that highlighted the Vietnam years. Our country survived them so there is hope for an end to these crazy times. Admittedly, I was probably on the wrong side of history back in those days. I thank God that He showed mercy for my youth and stupidity, and never gave up on me. God bless you, and praying for your fruitful retreat Father Chris.

"Even pacifists depend for their safety and security on the generosity and goodwill of non-pacifists." - A beautiful, powerful quote; one that should be remembered by the self-described pacifists of our modern day. Thank you for explaining this aspect of our faith, Fr. Alar! I didn't know I was supposed to defend myself growing up, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I was assaulted and struck by teens and adults, and I have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. I couldn't defend myself physically, and the schools I went to, taught us that if you use any force to defend yourself, you are as guilty as your assailant, and you are punished accordingly; if not worse than the perpetrator, in order to deter "violence". They judge physical self-defence (revenge, as they call it) as worse than spite. Please pray for us, here on the left coast of Canada. We so desperately need guidance and grace. 🙏

Fr. Chris, thank you for pointing out some of the true causes of war: poverty, ignorance, and substandard living conditions. I have witnessed much wickedness directed by those who have health, homes and steady income, towards those who lack these things and need help to attain them. People who have lived on the street for a long time, or who are retired and can't work anymore, or who are permanently injured or disabled, are being harassed and blamed for the state of our country. People at our workplaces, grocery stores, buses, and even at some Catholic Churches, are shamed. Out of fear and loathing for the few who might be faking their circumstances, they persecute those who are not. But to those who are responsible: the violent attackers, the corrupt businessmen, the con artists, the slothful workers... they will simply say "It is what it is". To anyone reading this, please pray for all souls, especially sinners, in the wickedness of our modern times. 🙏

I could relate so much to this, alcoholic father, overworked mom, sexually abused by three family members, full blown alcoholic, first drink at age 7. 15 years in the penitentiary for murder. Today, sober for 35 years, happily married, attend Mass, recite the Rosary and Divine Mercy daily. Praise God. What is the name of Robert' book?

The presentation is truly Living Divine Mercy and my deepest thanks to you, Fr. Chris, for giving us the best that would help us discover the workings of God’s grace in our lives. The story related here helps open wide my understanding of one’s experience. I highly admire and thank Robert Gannon for sharing his life story from childhood pain and rejection, to facing the war and trauma till he realises his need to change and encounters the saints help with Mary that brought him to Jesus. What a beautiful transformation in his life that inspires others never to lose hope. Thank you God for everything and the experience of finding you, yet you never leave us. Fr. Chris, you’re God’s chosen one for this work of evangelising people, who gives you the charism we’re all grateful for. Together with your dedicated and faithful team, my humble prayers for you and may God continue to bless you in all your days.

i always thought Jesus saying to take up the sword meant a metaphorical sword and not a real weapon, to fight evil with the goodness of God. wouldn't that make more sense in light of Jesus telling Peter to put away his sword?

Thank you for addressing this issue, which is a very confusing one for me. There is such a thing as the 'fog of war', which makes it very difficult to discern whether any particular war falls into the 'just' category. On who can we rely to morally examine and unpack the so-called fog of war? For example, there may be powerful influences behind the scenes that desire war for their own reasons, and create false scenarios that encourage others to agree to war. So the war may appear to be for legitimate protective reasons but in reality it's not. What then? There is just too much carnage in ww2, for example, that I can ever consider it a 'just' or in any way moral war. Certainly not in God's eyes. Catechism 2242 gives a good idea of our responsibility to be very cautious and discerning in what we willingly 'give to Caesar'.

Father, the civilian population was warned to leave the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as several other cities. The US dropped flyers to warn them, so I am not sure if the US violated the second criteria; the deaths of innocents being used to provide the good.

Dear Father Chris, we are so grateful for all your well-presented and timely teachings. Can you please, however, clarify your remarks here (around 8:17 into the video)? You spoke about the morality of the situation where the life of the pregnant mother is at risk and the double effect but without further clarification, some may conclude that you meant the direct killing of the child is then acceptable if it is to save the mother's life. As I am confident you already know (but others may not), the Church teaches that direct killing of the unborn child is never permissible. In the case of the ectopic pregnancy--of which I think you were thinking--the child's life is not taken directly but the medical team rather operates on the mother to save her (the good action) such that the (unintended) consequence is that the baby no longer has the support it needs and later normally dies in the womb. We love you, Father Chris, and all the Marians!! -A committed and seasoned Marian Helper.

re the "2nd Condition that was violated" (in the Atmoic Bonming of Japan) you stated that "The death of innocents was used to acheve the good of the war's end" ..this being the case, and considering the innocents being killed in Gaza by Israel, should our Church not be more vocal and braver in speaking out against Netanyahu's and Baden's actions?

I’m not a catholic and I have nowhere to go to ask questions so I usually just come here. I had a friend just message me there’s some video going around revelations 9:16 I think it is The new video is basically saying that Jesus has his name tattooed on his thigh. People asking if he literally means tattoo So I was thinking his name on his thigh thigh, a big muscle. It is probably something to do with that. I’m just trying to get a Catholic idea on what that is please thank you and is there anywhere that I can email to ask questions please

_ Regarding war: here religion enters the sphere of politics and political justification. This makes religion no different than secular politics. _ The commandment says "Thou shall not KILL". It does not equivocate between killing and murder. It is specific. The church has unconscionably made up 'laws' to serve its own purpose. Not actually knowing what or who God is, because the finite mind cannot comprehend the infinite, all religions proceed to make God in 'their own image and likeness' in an attempt to justify their own righteousness.
