Last month I drove a Golf R, to see if it could be a great sports car and it left me cold. This month, I am trying a newer Mk7.5 car with a different suspension and a map to 370bhp. Its owner thinks it will convince me of the Golf's worth - but will it?

FYI - I've now sold this "Baby GTR". She just is not suited to the roads where I live now... nearest fuel station that sells 99RON petrol; 22 miles one way. Fuel tank was good for 220 miles. I used 20% of a tank (roughly £15) to simply fill her up and get home again. Combine that with the nearest shop being 17 miles from home... yea you get the picture. Anyone that watches this and isn't sure about buying a Golf R... DO IT, the best car I've owned by a mile or three. A couple of tweaks and you have a car that dominates at the track, looks subtle and clean, doesn't break down, and is hilarious fun. It isn't cheap, but it's really effing worth it. I miss her every day now... then I just drive my Hilux up the mountain behind my house and get my noisy fix of motoring silliness.

What suspension mods had you put in this car?... U was planning on getting racing line lowering springs.. is that enough?
@JayOfBurn
@JayOfBurn 4 жыл бұрын
@@LordNimbrod The RacingLine springs are good on their own. I didn't do a complete coilover kit simply because it was my daily, and the stock shocks are much comfier than after market stiffer sets. The real difference was the ARB's. The springs helped keep the wheels planted, and really improved the look of the car... but the ARB's removed almost all body roll, which meant much flatter cornering. Most owners only swap the front ARB, I did both, and I'm really glad I did.

@@JayOfBurn ok thanks... also after reading your previous comment.. do you think the result of your fuel economy is because of the stage 1 revo tune?.. i was thinking whether to do the same or not.. Still contemplating.
@JayOfBurn
@JayOfBurn 4 жыл бұрын
@@LordNimbrod It's worth it. It really brings the car to life. The fuel efficiency is supposedly better after a stage 1 remap, a lot of guys in the owners club reported about a 5mpg improvement. I tended to drive quite spirited most of the time, so would normally be getting 21-24mpg. Ticking over on the motorway it would happily sit around 38mpg though.

Top work! Can I just ask, where do you drive around?? The roads look like they could be either Essex, South Cambs or even Suffolk.... always keen to seek out a new, ahem, route ;) Thanks again for the content, and any more interesting and old stuff then please do it; I personally loved the AMG series and bargain luxo-barge videos!!

You raise a very good point that very few journalists have ever talked about. In the snow/icey/very wet rear wheel drive is boardering on dangerous if you're not a very good driver. I live in a rural part, and have spun my BWM 318 (E46) more times than all my other cars put together. Mostly due to driving it at similar speeds as previous cars Saab 95, VW Passat (all FWD). The only other car I've had issues with is going back many years when I had a succession of Ford Sierra's also RWD. I was young and felt indestructible then so found it fun. On roads where the snow has frozen then fresh snow has fallen RWD is almost lethal.

These R's are pretty much identical to the s3's and rs3's, so a little engine remap and other computer tweaks you can do unlocks a whole lot more car underneath. Plus there's a lot of Audi quality hidden in these as well. That's why the engine can handle so much more.

The RS3's low down torque is significantly better than even a stage 1 S3/Golf R, but generally the value for money is great with these Golfs.

They weren't. The 7.5 was just as lifeless in the steering department and when pushing on, especially on roads you didn't know, you always had the feeling the front would let go first. Driving on a circuit proved it be pretty faithful, but numb. So, new top mounts to change front camber from 0.5 degrees to 2.5 degrees, front geometry change to put some toe out to help the inside front wheel pull the front in as lock is applied, a stiffer rear anti roll bar, a tweak geometry on the rear to add some toe out, created a very different car that had a front end completely locked on. Would rotate around the front, and on a dry road you knew well, you could be on full throttle often before the apex. However, whilst fine in the dry and wet, once the roads had become greasy, and tyres were cold with winter temps, the car had a propensity to break away from the rear either trail breaking, or on a trailing throttle into and apex. This could be nullified by applying some positive throttle, which then sent some power to the rear, but was a little too extreme for me, especially as my wife drives the car regularly and just wants a daily driver. This has been resolved by putting a little toe in to the rear to stabilise it. Doesn't seem to have upset the overall revised handling balance, but will need warmer temps and a known road to find the slight difference it has made. There will always be a trade off.

Well, I live in the West Highlands of Scotland now , and can tell you... I bought a Hilux. I loved my R, but it must be told that a (what turned into) 400bhp beast is not intended for a sheep farm, which is where I live. Great on the road, but took me so long to get along the 1.2mi track to the farm track that by the time I got there, I just wanted to leave her and go home. Too low, too much power. By Lawrie, I miss that car.

Well balanced & accurate review again, well done sir ;-) That's almost the double of my Mk7.5R, but mines a manual as I wanted just that bit more involvement, & the gearbox/clutch is great even if it won't take a remap due to torque limitations. I test drove a year old M235i the same day & felt the R was freer revving, (less lazy somehow) even if it sounded slightly better, but only just, as somewhat muffled. My Q is however what exact suspension has been used on this car? as I'm after changing mine as didn't want ACC either ;-) TIA

Mike Shacklock Hi Mike. They're RacingLine VWR 20mm springs, and H&R antiroll bars. Works a treat and feels great. You should be able to remap even with the manual box, it'll adjust the fuel/air mix to squeeze the horses out of the stock internals. Worth looking into, it releases the beastly power that the little block has locked away. Did you try the DSG before you went manual?
@JayOfBurn
@JayOfBurn 6 жыл бұрын
Yup, standard non-DCC dampers. I didn't go down the road of swapping the shocks as I didn't want it to be so stiff that it's not a comfortable daily. Plus, I live where there are a LOT of speed bumps, so the RL VWR springs still gives enough clearance that they don't cause an issue. I may swap out the full works if I go so far as Stage 3, but to be honest I'd only do that if I was going to turn her into a track car and have a different daily. Practicality and funds dictate when that will be... VAG did say they were going to be working on a full APR 7.5R later this year (hopefully that will include a Stage 3+ turbo), so I'm hoping when she does eventually go back (again, funds depending) for stage 2 I'll get to have a go ;)

JayEmm on Cars defo non-mod'd, as that would not make sense, it isn't apples to apples, then Im a fast big hatch fan, they are a perfect 'jack of all trade cars' for us mortals that can't afford a daily and a weekender. Personally, I think golf is too big(fat) to still be a proper hot hatch, the R is a great beast, but it just looks like it could be mums golf to 99% of people. same as the Focus rs. A hot hatch should be small, cheapish, and look its part, be relatively quick and handle well.fiesta st and Corsa vxr for example, are hot hatches. A fast polo, I bet would sell like shit, given that would be truer to the philosophy to the mk1 gti. my fave all-rounder is a quick estate. An RS6 tops the bill. for mere mortals, the poor man's solution is the petrol Vrs estate (£27k or £20k for 6month ex demo unit) with a bit of a tune. Also it has the DSG option, (7 speed iirc) which I think suits the car. Comfy long cruiser and fun when it needs to be, plus it will go the tip or take 5 and their luggage across Europe, with room for a dog or two. Superb sportsline estate, would fit the neighbours family in too. My GTC lease is up later this year and the VRS petrol is top of my list. Though the Leon FR ST, I think handles a touch better. however, I don't like the looks as much. Do yo watch harry garage? I bet you do, if not you're missing out. Sorry for the long ramble.

If I remember correctly, new exhaust, new intercooler and new turbo, stock motor. I had a conversation with a tuner at SantaPod 3-4 months ago, and I was asking about the overall cost of getting forged internals, and his advice was; save the money and just buy a second motor if required, it'll cost less and the EA888 reliability is so good that it will do a huge amount before any issues arise.

1066gaz That's the point mate, it's not regularly. The block can run that sort of power reliably. It's a case of if it goes wrong rather than when. I know a couple of R owners who been running around 550bhp for quite some time with no problem.

No direct comparison with a mk7 when it has an awesome Revo tune. Not much in it when both stock, similarly the differences when both have a Revo tune is basically the virtual dash

I won’t argue with your point that an AWD turbo-nutter hatch has a better ability to deal with snow than a BMW but I wouldn’t agree that an M135i is dangerous in wintry conditions. I daily a 135i in Central Scotland, drive it like a nutter on B roads from time to time and take it up to Scottish ski centres on summer tyres and I have never once thought it was going to kill me. I have never got stuck in wintry conditions. The stability control is excellent in winter and I have the reassurance of knowing exactly where the power will go if I start to get into trouble. I would also make the observation that, in winter, the only factors that limit the progress I can make across a road are stopping distance and cornering grip, both of which are no different whether you have AWD or RWD. Not enough traction is rarely an issue apart from a standing start which is only really relevant if you are someone who enjoys launch control from every set of traffic lights. If I had a Golf R, I know I would love it, but for me RWD and a straight 6 make the M135/140 the best option.

Load of bull..you say it wouldn't try and kill you but then say if I get in trouble I know where the power will go. Thats called dangerous! Been in plenty and dangerous always comes to mind. But any car in snow Needs winter tyres.

Steering setup is no different vs mk7 & mk7.5. So it's very strange/odd you say there is "more feel" in the 7.5 steering. No changes were made from factory. Lowered suspension/anti roll bars won't effect this.

I'm sure the haldex was tweaked on the 7.5 to respond quicker too. That's got to help. I can't stand my 7.5 R estate by the way. One of the most lifeless cars I've ever driven. Dull engine note, lifeless steering, DSG that doesn't allow full manual control and a 4WD system that does it's best to remove adjustability. Best thing about the car is the adaptive cruise control for traffic. Wish I'd leased an e Golf instead.

There isnt much difference (mostly asthetical) between the mk7 and the 7.5. Most of the difference you feeling is coming from manual to a DSG and the modifications. They didnt make any 7.5 manuals so u cant rly compare apples to apples. ps You mention it has Stage1 remap with +70hp with stock parts. Thats smth I highly advice against, the turbo is being bootlenecked and you sending extra heat and pressure throw the exhaust system that isnt set to cope with. Even just a stage1 (usually gives u +20-35hp, so an extra 70hp its rly recommended) I cant stress enough that u need to install a larger downpipe to be able to push out all that extra pressure you are telling the turbo to spool.

Dear Cletus, I watch your videos for your shirts, your tonsorial tremendousness, and the state of your beard. In my opinion :- Your shirt is simply stupendous. It would appear you have recently visited the surgeon barber, and have product slapped over your noggin. Your facial hair is something of a conundrum. You've shaved within living memory, but neglected to trim the pubes. Therefore, in conclusion, you have certainly made an effort, but there is still considerable room for improvement.

Guys great content...... but dont let the young think it is safe to cut corners on country roads, been to many head on deaths with sporty little and big cars. Adjust your camera angle, help safety on our roads, dont cut a corner because you can, there might be some innocent 3 foot high rambler just on your line out.. Public roads are for the public with rules ie: dont cross the lines unless safe, and most times thats a guess.
@JayEmmOnCars
@JayEmmOnCars 6 жыл бұрын
The low camera angle is deliberate, it is there to enhance the sensation of speed. Also in most videos the camera is actually off to the side of the car, you might think I am driving in the middle of the road but I am not. On quite a few of our roads the line i take is necessary thanks to debris/potholes etc... Obviously I have sight through the corner if crossing the white lines. Also, for what it's worth very few young people actually watch my videos. My audience is generally quite mature.
