Does the VW Golf R Render Sports Cars Obsolete?

If you're looking at buying your first sports car, it might be hard to overlook the incredible value for money offered by the current crop of hot hatchbacks. Today, I drive possibly the most iconic hatchback of all - the Golf. But no ordinary Golf, this is the 300bhp R.
With a plush interior, four seats, four wheel drive and a 2L turbocharged engine, does this car render sports cars obsolete?

"the interior feels the same as the one ten years ago" that is so not true omg... the interior quality has made a huge improvement especially in the past 3,4 years!!!

Very professionally presented & so nice to clearly hear what you're actually saying via the lapel mic, rather than the usual camera mics used by so many others!

Yet another thoughtful, honest review. I had a Mk2 Golf GTI 16v at the turn of this century. It was my very first car, but I did still have a bike at that time. I loved it - granted, the Mk2 and Mk7 are very different beasts, with loads more weight these days (a bit like me) and very different steering characteristics.

A very nicely, well-rounded review. I enjoyed your take on the Golf R - other reviews I've read miss the point about 'feel' and I'd agree that steering devoid of feel is a big problem in a car otherwise so capable. It would be interesting to see how it compares against the FK8 Civic Type R - supposedly vastly improved since it's regained independent rear suspension once again. I think you summed up the reactive approach to the Haldex 4WD system too and it's a bit of a shame it's so noticeable.

was a really good review james. i like the 7R but in terms of the previous R's and GTi's its too common to feel special, although from what i've heard from owners it is a really good car for modifying, and can be a real weapon on a track

You are so right about the interior. I had one of the first MkV Golf GTis from new (brilliant car) and about three years ago my wife and I went to test drive a new Golf as a possible replacement. We got in and looked at each other, and both said it felt almost identical to the old car.

That’s why you buy one with DCC an stick it in comfort the drive is unreal, also you need to get in a dsg to really feel the drive quality

This is a bummer. I was looking to get a GTI to replace my G37. I still miss the steering in my Honda Civic. Excellent review as always, I just watched on my 4K monitor and it's immersive.

My old 1991 GTI 16v was the best in snow..2 feet up a lane no body on the road up hill no problems. It was osm never forget it. Cuz it was so much fun!!

Nice review as always. What keeps me interested is that you have gone away from the norm and said it how you see it. Everybody heaps praise on the golf except you, and then you validate your argument. Was going to try one of these as a Godzilla replacement, way to go as you have shit on that idea. I did try a F30 335d on the weekend, quite impressed by it but it felt like so many modern cars, inert and safe, no driver involvement to go quick, just press and go. Each time I step away from a test drive, my ageing Gtr still feels quite the event. On the topic of hot hatches though, I was impressed with the new type R, ugly almost to the point of being weirdly attractive from some angles, but an amazing steer...

After having driven both, I really must say I prefer a tuned up GTI over the R in dry weather (and I don’t drive sporty in the wet anyway). The GTI weights some 3-400 lb less than the R, you can really feel it. That plus being tuned up to a bit more power than a stock R and whoa!! That thing is fun to drive around the twisty country roads.

It's not about the power output of a car it's about what it can do with it's power. Modern car's have lots of power but because they weigh so much that power isn't used very well.
