Have you considered trenching for zero freeze water faucets? You could put one near the animals and near the pond for easy watering and topping off the pond. Mosquitoes will not lay their eggs in flowing water, so putting in those solar water fountains can help keep them from laying.

Yes, I think it's a waste of water, time, and effort. It'll dry up with all their direct energy baking they do!
@dreamchaisr13 ай бұрын
Ok so I live near the Red River in Texas... Little town called Bonham.. we had 32 acres and our neighbors across the street had 40 and they ran cows. We had two spring fed ponds that never ran dry so no problem there... but Mr Morris had put in a pond for his cows and it was not. During droughts Mr M would run a hose to his pond and run water for about 24 hours once a week or so depending on the drought. We were all on well water from a big underground aquifer so no problem with running out for us at all. Running it for an hour does nothing. It's evaporating faster than your replacing it. The pump will be fine. It will run for years and years before you have to replace it. We had ours for 40 years and just recently had to replace it. Mr M never had to replace his and it's still running I assume but he passed so I don't know.. haven't seen a well guy out there so.. run the pump. Fill the pond it needs to fill and soak in so you'll stop soaking the earth needlessly. Most of the naysayers never had a farm and know diddly about wells. Once the pond has been full and kept full the ground will be saturated and it won't take so long. Well guy said run it. You haven't even run it enough to clear the silt out of the rock yet. RUN IT!! At least 24 hours. We had to do that to clear the silt anyway before you hook it to the house or it will clog the system and filters up. RUN IT! It will be fine. One of the problems is the pond is so shallow. Ours was deep over 8 feet deep. It would help to have it deeper and not so shallow, but it's hard to see on video how deep yours is
@birdmandan70773 ай бұрын

Instead of PVC use rolled water line. Much cheaper, easier to install and less chance of it cracking. You could also compare cost between having it delivered and time to fill, wear and tear on your pump, generator and fuel costs. You could get 5000+ gallons at a time.
@TexasHomesteaders3 ай бұрын
I'd let it dry up, add some bentonite and then gravel and then start filling it. It's just evaporating and soaking into the ground. We call them tanks here. I'd rethink swimming in stagnant water that pigs and cows waller around in. Good way to get sick.
@lisathomas66293 ай бұрын

Don't waste ur time and money on the pond right now. Seriously. One Good Gully Washer will fill that pond. Have patience. You need to concentrate on your power trenching to the Bin. Getting Power Panel set up there. Then you won't need to waste more money on gas for the generator. The gen then would only be needed in emergencies or special projects. All these things youe "want" to do with the pond are not things that are needed atm. Yeah plan for the future, but secure your Needs before you delve into making "wanted fun things".

You're definitely not going to fill that pond with your hose. Also as you said it's going to get extremely hot this summer which is going to evaporate faster. You can buy tanker trucks of water for cheap. Remember that pond was dry when you found the property. You're putting too much effort and worry in that pond. You always say everything happens for a reason. That means the pond will do what the pond will do. Also you are going to wear out that pump faster by using it for the pond. My suggestion is get all the fencing done first. That's important infrastructure. You asked for opinions so here is mine. Also I sent you an email with a link on the difference in the strength of dry pour vs wet pour concrete. It is an eye opener.

Maybe worth checking with the local fire department to help fill the pond. It would be faster and you wouldn't burn out your water pump.
@markindustriez3 ай бұрын
The pond was always an odd layout to me. I think it's a little too big and 2 thirds of it is "beach" shallow So when you try filling it up its spreading out over a larger area so it's not going to fill quickly. You also have to consider evaporation. The larger the area the water is over the more it'll evaporate from the sun, especially if it's shallow because it heats up faster. Plus, you have to consider that if it is not a clay bottom the water is seeping into the ground.
@tammywragg62543 ай бұрын
Maybe contact the local fire department and see if they can or would be able to help you fill it up..that or a local water company that helps fill pools..just a thought..if neither of those then I would say do the pipe it is alot of work to do..but that seems to be the last resort if you can't find some one reasonably priced to help fill it..

the pond is a worthwhile investment in your property....definitely worth it to lay the pvc, even trench it in... then it's permanent.... and then the hose is available for any other use you want it for... be sure to put in a switch valve and then you can just easily switch it between the pond pvc and the hose whenever you need it.... this is your "forever" property... do it right the first time and you'll never regret it...same with running the barn gutters through pvc to the small pond

@russellwatters58913 ай бұрын
Personally, without rain on a regular basis, using the hose is costly and the water evaporates almost as fast as its going in. I'd put stock tanks out for the livestock, misters for Lambeau and the pigs, and let the pond fill naturally with rain. My 2 cents worth. Other than that, building jumps, tree ropes, and having fun, can be done, you'll just have to watch the water depth. Love ya'll ❤

You need to get the ground tested to see if the pond can hold water. If you need to add clay to the dirt. You could be at a leaking point and why it doesn’t fill and why it doesn’t stay. You can get the soil tested for not a lot of money. And if it holds water then look into water trucks that’s how pond fillers fill them. You will burn your pump out no matter how you try to use your well.

The problem is is that as slow as its filling up because it’s a pretty large area you’re trying to fill up with a small garden house, it’s going to evaporate pretty quickly especially with the hot summer coming. Not to mention you’re going to burn out the pump motor running it all the time. Your best bet is to try and get some water trucks out there to fill it.

To help you determine what method is best for filling the pond the formula should be: L x W x D x 7.48 = TG. Say it's ~ 40ft x 40ft x 4ft x 7.48 = 47,872 gallons. If you're filling ~500 gallons per hour, then you'll need to run water for about 96 hrs. This doesn't account for evaporation or water sinkage.

Check pricing on water trucks but using a well with standard 1” line will take days to fill a 1 acre pond which I’m guessing that yours is somewhere around 1/2-3/4…You will have to”seepage” as it fills due to it being a “new” pond…Once the surrounding ground is saturated it will slowly fill and hold water…It will just take some time

If a feller got that ditch graded over from the road to dump in that pond, he might could get a buddy with a tanker to ship in some water... Just pull up on the road and dump it right there in the ditch. That's some gain, there.. Think how long it would take that hose to fill a tanker... Not to mention any rain it would send you. Anyhow, if you got a roll of ABS UG pipe, you wouldn't lose a dang thing, because you could use it later when you go to putting in your spickets out to the barn and such.
