Man, I love your classic Hollywood and classic foreign movie reviews. I don’t know anyone else who is reviewing quality classic films in 4K Blu-ray releases. Everyone else does mostly CGI heavy recent movie releases in 4K blu-ray.

Old movies like these truly are the best for this 4k format

The reason it used to be on tv all the time is because someone forgot to renew the copyright and the movie wound up in public domain. After about twenty years, the copyright holder got the rights back and it only place twice a year on one channel

Pretty bummed it doesn't come with the new remaster on the regular Blu Ray disc. It's the color version.

I would like to see “Singin in the rain” released on 4K since next year is the 70th anniversary of the film, maybe a cool box set would be nice like what we had with the 60th anniversary bluray box set

I watch this every year, but I find myself going back to the colourized version more often than black and white these days. I know it’s not cool from the purist point of view, but I enjoy it more anyway.

Is the standard bluray with colorized version the original colorized release or was it redone again as part of this restoration?

you talk about how The Wizard of Oz was taken better care of because it was always seen as a classic, when it is the exact same situation as this movie It was a failure that didn't make its money back until it was shown on TV (also at Christmas time) about 20 years later

The audio info on this review is incorrect. The soundtrack is a Dolby TrueHD mono 2.0 mix - i.e., mono spread across the left and right channels. Why this is only coming out of your centre speaker I'm not sure - perhaps there is something wrong with your setup - cos I have this disc, and the sound is coming out of the left and right speakers.

I actually haven't owned this since I had the Criterion laserdisc back in the day. Actually, I'd like to hear that commentary again...

I once ordered “Dredd” on Blu-ray from amazon and they sent me the “its a wonderful life” Blu-ray instead. It was pretty disappointing.

Screen shots a possibility in the future? Maybe not due to copyright issues? Anyway love the reviews and the great support and info for the format. I’m a hifi dealer and I do a ton of educating on this topic as well. Might be interested in doing a discussion with you about the technology if you’re interested. I feel the same way about colorization; when it comes to tone and lighting, Frank Capra wanted this film to be black and white; however, the color isn't bad. It feels different to me when watching in color, so it's one of those that you can watch once in black and white and then in color. The original colored version from the 1980's was just about unwatchable. It looked palid and it was as if the life had been drained from it. Good review and I look forward to picking it up. To clarify the history, this film went into public domain in the early eighties and it was rediscovered and then played to death until NBC secured the broadcast rights sometime over the past twemtu years. I'm sure there's a more clarified version of that unfortunate history online.

It wasn't just cheap to show it on TV, it was free. The film's ownership had slipped through the cracks and the movie went into public domain. So local channels could show It's a Wonderful Life without paying anything for the rights, which is why it was shown so often. Also, it doesn't look as great as OZ because The Wizard of OZ was filmed in three-strip Technicolor, the "Omnimax" of its time. Also, if they want to present the film in an improved way, they should create a stereo surround version (the technical means of doing that has been perfected in recent years).

Jeff, thanks for the review! But you kinda got the story wrong about how IAWL got to be so popular on TV during the 1970s. Here's the straight dope from an article about it: "In 1974, the movie entered the public domain after the film's copyright holder simply forgot to file for a renewal. This meant that TV stations everywhere could play It's a Wonderful Life all day and all night and not have to pay a cent for it. Networks aren't necessarily shy about exploiting free Christmas content, and the film's reemergence on television gave Capra's story new life. While a post-World War II crowd may have rejected the movie's sentiment, subsequent generations seem to revel in the opportunity to visit the nostalgic whimsy of it all."

Something I wanted to ask.... the focus on this and a few other videos seems to miss you face (blurry) and the background is sharp. Are you aware of this? Anyway thanks for the reviews. “It’s a wonderful life” is no way at a lower level than “wizard of Oz”. Have to disagree on that point.

Loved the review but to us here it is Wizard of Oz on a lower level as there is NO better old classic then It's a Wonderful Life. That difference aside. The wife and I are thankful you really went into a deep dive on all this presents for the fans.

I find HDR on a black and white movie very amusing.

They had the option to film it in technicolor but, do to budget constraints they had to stick with Black & White to keep from going over budget. Theatrically the film's break-even point was $6.3 million about twice the production cost a figure it did not come close to achieving on its initial release. Although It's a Wonderful Life initially received mixed reviews at the time and was unsuccessful at the box office It made only $3.3 million at the box office.
