You are the first reviewer I’ve seen mentioning the raccoons bizarre ergonomics. My hand fits an elementum comfortably but the raccoon, my pinky hits the peak of that hump, I’m wish they just made it straight or not aggressive in its angles.

I tested 2 CJRBs in RPM9 and both tips broke off. I them resharpened one and started using it in the kitchen. A year later, the edge holds really well. I might revisit these since there’s a lot of discussion based on Dr. Thomas’ recent video.

Great review as always man. I LOVE my cross-bar lock Raccoon. I wish the pinky area of the handle didn't have that little cut and was a little longer for my XL hands but I saw a rep talking about a larger version and otherwise it's an amazing knife that's one of the few non-Spyderco knives I carry regularly (PS, I'm carrying my K390 Stretch 2 right now and LOVE it... I just wish they'd make a Shaman in K390 that'd be a grail-knife for me). I own 2 Raccoons, both cross-bar locks and keep one on my bino-pack when I'm out hunting/hiking and I've dressed a several deer with it. I've been looking hard at the new "not-a-compression-lock" model but have held off until now. Glad to see it pass the test so maybe I'll go grab one once the one I want comes into stock. If you haven't seen it check out the Kansept Nesstreet Button-lock. Just got one in the mail and it's a great folding Nessmuk of sorts. really cool new knife (3.5' blade in 14C28N and Micarta scales, all the things I love in a knife).

Bought a Civivi Elementum button lock but the handle was to small. Handle was just not long enough to get my pinky finger wrapped around it. Went with a Civivi Praxis and love that knife. Been my go to EDC for the past two months.

G'day Aaron, glad to see a spine thwacking didnt upset this one mate; ) As far as locks go, ......... .main thing is: it has one ...... and it doesn't fail ; ) ..... personally I'm still quite happy with a liner lock on a light to medium duty fella and of course straight to a backlock for extra grunt. I definitely dont see any value in a 3 or 3 1/2 finger grip; as you say, there's so many models coming out on daily basis, ...... why would ya settle for that; even my svelte little top pocket jobs, (CEO, G5 Metamorph and such), give you 4 finger purchase for a L, maybe even XL, hand. Like the look of the CJRB job, .... like my Tiaga, its probably D2 though ; (........ I'd go with the Conspirator in the price range, it'd be a good one to give Nitro V a crack.. Cheers Duke.

They should lose the comically large choils and put more handle into the same overall length and that should fix their handle length issues.

Ar-rpm9 is basically a slightly stronger 9cr18mov. It's a pretty good steel for $50ish bucks. Knife Steel Nerds just did an amazing write up about it's composition. There's a little drama over the name. The "PM" in "AR-RPM" stand for "powder metallurgy" which this steel is not, it's "spray form", and the "9" is a reference to the elements in the steel but there are actually only 7 of note. Artisan Cutlery (parent company of CJRB) is saying it was a marketing mistake. So it's a poorly named spray form version of 9cr18mov that should be called something like ar-sf7. Mistakes in naming aside it's a good enough steel for the price depending on how you feel about 9cr18mov I suppose.

@@drtmi8789 Did you have one of the first knives to come out with it? They did a bad, really soft heat treat at first, but they've fixed it. Vosteed = Girl Knives…😂😂😂. J/K. I would agree, I don’t like the small handles on those models either. They remind me a lot of what Hogue does with the Deka. I like the design, just upsize it. I like the Racoon design as well, just too small. Love the Pyrite design but all of these knives run on bearings and I guess I am a pivot snob. I just prefer washers. That limits a lot of my choices. I do think Spyderco has the market on the compression lock. I have not seen anyone who does it as well as them.

I wish these companies would trash the micarta already. It is such a garbage medium for a grip/handle. I also wish that hey would offer all black models, not black steel and red, green, blue, white, etc. colors except black. I love the top liner lock. Push button lock are weak.

As a lefty, the spyderco compression lock sucks for me, specially on a smaller knife like a para 3. I had the LW para 3 and re-sold it after two days, before it ended up stuck in my leg (or worse) after it slips out when closing. I do love the lefty para 2 I got at a later point, but that is the only lefty spyderco I'm aware of. Normal version of the para 2 is manageable, but still feels unsafe to close in the left hand. Something like this "top liner lock" with a button makes the compression lock way more acessible. I have the crossbar racoon so I don't feel I would be missing out on this one.

I don´t get the purpose of these tests. Who uses a pocket knife as a hammer? If you are properly using a knife, you will never be applying pressure on the blade that would force the blade to close...
@brianf9619
@brianf9619 28 күн бұрын
So you have never Stabbed anything with your pocket knife before ? I do and Obviously Aaron does and when you stab something you have a chance of putting pressure on the wrong side of the blade and blade will want to close , so if you don't have a good lock it may be By By Fingers .....

1. great reviews. 2. the pinky dangling thing disqualifies these knives from my consideration. Same problem with the Cold Steel short srk. Tried modifying the handle on that unit. 3. the blade length of each of the knives disqualifies them from my consideration. 4. I want my folders to have a 3.5 inch blade length, like the Spyderco Endura. Yes, I have a pile of old Spyderco Delicas, but they are basically a back up knife, not a daily carry type knife. 5. If I want a slip joint knife, I buy a slip joint knife, not a knife that purports to have a solid compression type lock and which is questionable.

Axis/cross bar locks are way overrated. If they aren't machined correctly, they will fail just like any other lock failing to do its one job.🧐🤣

No one at Vosteed, whether its their employees in FB groups or the people who push their products will answer if the pivot lock on the ankylo or the top liner lock are made to adjust for wear over time. The pivot lock definitely looks like blade play will happen one day. Does the Top Liner lock have room to lean over farther and farther like a regular liner lock as it wears in?
@DB.KOOPER
@DB.KOOPER 29 күн бұрын
Use your tools and buy two if you know you like one and don't want to be without it when you wear it out and/or it breaks. The Ankylo has removable (and therefor replaceable) lock-mating surfaces and a doesn't lock up like a liner-lock so that's a truly mystifying comparison nor does a compression-lock rely on the mating surface on the back of the blade like a liner-lock... Might want to take your knives apart and learn about how they work sometime. My guess based on decades of experience is you, like most folks these days pontificating on the engineering of this and that knife on internet forums/social media, will _NEVER_ use the knife enough to have to worry unless you just sit in your cubicle fidgeting with your knife locking and unlocking it ALL DAY every day for 5 years. I have knives I've carried for over 30 years that have blades worn down due to sharpening but they're locks are still strong and I've carried them hunting, rafting and working as a Medic/FF and a Wildland FF/SAR-Tech. I'm hard on tools and other then garbage frame-locks I've never had a folding knife fail unless I was trying to make it fail.
