Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar
The Spicebush caterpillar is probably the cutest caterpillar you’ve ever seen and unlike any other you’ve seen too. This cartoon-like creature is like something from a fantasy novel.
The mature caterpillar has “snake head” eyespots. They are green with a pale yellow lateral line running the length of the caterpillar. The underside of the caterpillar is pinkish-brown, and each abdominal segment is ringed by six blue spots outlined in black. One dot on each side is below the yellow lateral line. They have two pairs of false eyespots: It’s this combination of the eyespots and a swollen thorax is believed to mimicry either green snakes or tree frogs. This fools predators like birds.
It lives in a silk-covered leaf tube. They spin silk to tighten a leaf around itself, giving the caterpillar a safe place to hide during the day. It feeds at night. The mature caterpillar continues to feed at night and rest during the day.
Two most common host plants are Spicebush and Sassafras.
Their distribution is in the eastern regions from southern Canada to Florida, western Oklahoma and central texas. They live in yards, pine barrens, wooded swamps, deciduous woodlands, fields, roadsides and parks.
The chrysalis hibernates over winter, and during this time, they are usually brown to mimic dead leaves. The pupae that form during the spring or the summer months are usually green, resembling the new foliage.
The Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly ‘Papilio Troilus’ When the wings are open, the dorsal side of the primary wings is primarily black with dull white to ivory spots along the margin. The hindwings have orange spots on the costal margins.
