but how do you remove ammonia? add air to the water and host more good bacteria ? i love the idea but there is something left out of this i would need to see before id risk my reef to a canister. and more often then not with the canister i have. its builds up air inside of it. then spits a fin cloud of it into the tank ever few and keeps the fowlr tank i use it on cloudy with tiny air bubbles unless i go shake it every day. i hate the thing $550 of disappointment. although its not quite like his i still do not see a way to gas exchange.

Great video buddy. I have a pre filter thingy similar to yours only it is outside the canister filter... 3 grades of sponge and i add a final layer of filter floss on top of those. I have both ends of the scale.... a 40 gallon budget system I learned the hobby with (now 5 years old and full of my mistakes) and a 1 year old ecotech run 125 gallon (minus many of the mistakes but still far from completion). Check em out when you get a spare 5 minutes.. Not in same ball park as you, but the fact I have to frag regularly is proof enough of its success. 😂😂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🐠

I am a paranoid reefer and so have a sump as well as a canister filter! My canister filter has 3 layers of different foams from fine to course. It also has built in UV, 2 bags of sintered glass and ceramic tubes. The main downside is that I have to take the filter apart to get to the trays and rinse everything through which takes be about 20 minutes twice a week. In my sump I have a filter sock, a skimmer, live rock, my heaters and carbon in the return chamber. I don't mind the work as long as I see the benefits!

You are absolutely right it is perfectly acceptable to use a canister filter on a reef aquarium. My first saltwater fish aquarium was in 1965 when I was 12 years old. Before the 1980s no one had any idea for the most part about sump filtration, we used under gravel filtration or hang on the back filter box, or canister filtration, I’ve used all of them and canister filters can be used in much of the same way as sumps, each have their advantages and disadvantages. One does not necessarily have to have a sump fitted with a mechanical protein skimmer to remove organic waste, there are other ways to get rid of organics, both mechanical removal and chemical media removal, in other words there is more than one way to skin a cat. It is completely bogus that the only way to a successful reef aquarium is a sump. I’ve had success since way before sumps caught on. A sump is highly desirable though and can even be made into a biological display itself, which is pretty cool. Nothing worse than narrow minded hobbyist in my opinion. GOOD VIDEO!👍

Hey Mike awesome videos, I'm thinking about setting up a 60gallon breeder reef tank, love your tanks. What size filter would you recommend for a 60gal planned for fish and corals. Also about flow the canister style filters seem to have less flow than a traditional pump but being it's in the filter and not in a sump does it make up for it? I know most corals like alot of flow and obviously can add powerhead if needed but since my tank is smaller I was hoping I could possibly get away with using the innovative Marine rotating style nozzles on possibly two outflows one on either side of the tank with the intake possibly in the middle? I love the glass tubes you use it makes them almost invisible Thanks for your videos and suggestions.

I started off with AIO tanks and it felt like a must to have a sump, so on my tank upgrade that’s what i went for but although there’s some good features of having one….. I’m not fully sold that it’s worth it and I’m seriously thinking of going canister in then future. The only thing I would miss is a skimmer but not having gurgling noises, limited space, a tank with a black/blue backing and having it drilled, harder to fix leaks, less plugs, and it’s easier for anyone looking after your tank whilst your away because it’s contained in one unit and a lot of people have had a tropical tank before and use to working with one.

Absolutely love your videos. I have an eheim Ecco pro 300 canister filter on my 125 litre reef tank. The filter has a pre filter which is great but then in the bottom filter basket I put a course sponge and some floss. Mechanical filtration, then in the middle basket I have aquaforest life bio, biological filtration and then in the top basket I have aquaforest phosphate minus layered between two pieces of floss, chemical filtration. The problem is after a few days the floss starts to get blocked and the filter keeps releasing bubbles into the aquarium. I then have to change all the pieces of floss after a few days, which means removing all the filter baskets to change the floss and because I’m taking the filter baskets out of the filter every few days I’m constantly disturbing the aquaforest life bio so the biological filtration is being disturbed and can’t do it’s job properly.

I did this 15 years ago, but we didn't have chaeto reactors back then, just had to rely on GFO in the cannister. What's in your cannister by the way? I don't think chaeto really removes nitrate, far more likely your rock is doing that, but great for silicate and phosphate removal.

I like the idea with the canister filter. What still keeps me away now is the Auto Top Off Unit. I've seen your video "The Best Aquarium Auto Top Off Unit" but I'm not sure if I can do it safely with a dosing pump. My apartment is not air conditioned. The weather here changes often. In other words, the water evaporates differently. If I come home from work every day, that's probably safe, but what if I'm on vacation? How do you do that? Or what else could I install for a protection against water overflow?

Nice video, Mike. Do you have video showing how the plumbing works (Connecting the whole system)? is the canister filter able to pump water into the reactor then all the way back to your tank? Or the reactor has its own pump inside? Also, where to buy the soft tube you used on your inflow and outflow? I find the tubes coming with the canister filter are really hard to put on and remove from the glass inflow and outflow, which makes the cleaning really difficult. Again, thanks for sharing your setup, it is amazing.

The soft tubes can be purchased from Sicce, just find a distributor. You will need the grey type. Or you can use a connector and attach it to some soft silicone tubing. The pump of the filter runs the reactor too. So it’s a very energy efficient system.

hehe just did my canister maintenance 2 days ago. this was the first time in 4 months since setup i didn't find that much sludge my freshwater hob has thick sludge every month but i have more fish in there and bigger fish. i rinsed the sponges in tank water and bio media cleaned the propeller screw it all back up and setup again. this was also the first "water change" for the setup but all went well. i say "water change" because i had to throw all of my first 120g of saltwater so i ran out of salt and my tank had about 95g of water for a month before i added water to the top. i didn't want to do this water change as I have my ATS so i wanted to compare the results arriving but i needed to replace carbon so figured why not while i'm at it.

you say you use tap water to clean your sponges. you don't use rodi or tank water? isn't running tap water on on the sponges going to kill the bb on it but most importantly introduce tds to the system like chlorine if water isn't from a well among a plethora of other solids?
@Mikeymikemike
@Mikeymikemike 2 жыл бұрын
It's not really a big deal to the beneficial bacteria as it all lives in the filter . Those sponges are frequently cleaned. You could use tank water but it isn't necessary. The tap water gets wrung out so not much of it goes back into the tank. I'd say 10ml is trapped after wringing it dry but thats it... No need to be overly careful since the sponge is not filled with in tap water when reintroduced to the tank. 10ml of tap water added to a 200L system will do nothing.

I notice the floating skimming portion of your inlet pipe seems fixed in place? I'm curious how you achieve good surface skimming with all the surface movement of a reef tank
@Mikeymikemike
@Mikeymikemike 2 жыл бұрын
It is fixed as it presses up against the glass. It still sufficiently skims the surface all the time. The water level stays pretty constant. I can always manually adjust it if something is off.

Hello Mike , great video again. Question : What mode do you use your wave pump ? I don't have the same one so instead of a short code , could you explain the type ? ( Sinus or classic wave or random or something totally different? I noticed in your earlier videos you were using it on classic wave mode but i think you switched. Keep up the videos . Greetings from Turkey

I have it on wave mode as well but it cycles through all the modes every hour. Sometimes it’s a big wave, sometimes it’s a constant. In these videos I turn down the pump speed for less noise :)

Ok, so what about water chemistry? Youre running SPS so you need to have aome pretty stable parameters going on unless youre changing water weekly also... do you have an ATO? Are you dosing? Are you testing your water? Theres a ton more to keeping an SPS tank outside of the filter system.
