As a Hawaii resident I know how this one goes Get slugs to deal with the anemone, then birds to eat the slugs, snakes to eat the birds, Mongoose to eat the snakes, and finally Mongoose eating gorillas, And then those just die out in the winter.

@@ExhaustedScarf Well, let's just say they have incredibly strict animal import laws for a reason. Long story short, invasive dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs and rats can seriously ruin an island ecosystem's day, and every intervention they made to fix the situation backfired spectacularly. Most famous of all (so famous that Pokemon of all places has a reference to it) is them importing mongooses to combat sugarcane-eating rats, only to discover that mongooses didn't want to hunt rats. They did, however, love eating the island's beautiful endemic birds. This is also the reason Australia has insane prices for some fish. They can't be imported and have to be supplied from a breeder, which is much costlier than Brazil's "set an entire river as a breeding tank, then scoop a couple hundred thousand spare fry every year" approach. (Which is honestly genius as it both protects the environment by making the river a source of revenue and allows mass harvesting of popular aquarium fish without crashing the populations).

A lot of the predators of aiptasia are actually predators of its juvenile stage. Your new nudibranchs might struggle to take a bite out of those polyps that are larger than themselves. I'm not a marine aquarist, but in freshwater aquariums it's usually a good idea to manually rip out the invaders that are big enough to grab (unless it's hydra).

@@hockeypan8066 I'd rather have a tank blooming with perfect-sized food for my specific predators than one with just a few too-big examples of the prey species. The adults are going to keep propagating whether you yank them or not.
@Saighead
@Saighead 5 ай бұрын
I had to educate myself deeper about this species (Berghia), but it appears they will be able to handle most of the adults just fine. These suckers attack the base of the aptasia they are gonna eat, cause it to retract, and then start munching. And you definitely don't want to rip aptasia out mechanically, they evolved to jettison polyps when threatened, and can regrow from bits and parts you failed to pluck. Its lose lose. If I were to have to remove one manually, I would "face blast" (it does work, but can be tricky to learn how to get the aptasia to willingly and correctly accept that first glug of death that causes it to spasm and contract just the right way.) There are two issues with these nudibranch's that I see, including one or two that might need that face blast: 1) The Berghia might not be able to get to the ones set up in the weirs of the overflow, unless they are unlike all other nudibranch species and don't get blown away if you look at them too strongly. Similar issue if there are any aptasia near powerheads. And of course, if there are tubes, a sump, etc, the Bergia can't get to any aptasia that have established there. 2) This is kinda a race between starvation of the Berghia and the available number of Aptasia in the tank that they can access. It will take weeks to happen, but there usually comes a point where they have eaten all they can access, and even if there are a few mature aptasia in the system where they cannot access popping out polyps back into the display area of the tank regularly, they don't prove enough for the Berghia to survive on.

you can probably yank em off if theyre reachable and you can find them, but like a lot of those kinds of animals they just kinda shoot their gunk into the water to reproduce, so youd be playing whack-a-mole with them, that and you risk hurting the other animals. A lot of sea anemones also regenerate so physically killing them is pretty hard, usually you need to completely eat or poison or starve them to make sure they dont come back. so yeah they're like dandelions that bite
