Is this LEGAL? Stone Crabbing Questions with HONEST Answers!
After a recent stone crab video "STONE CRAB REDEMPTION" (linked below) we received many questions in the comments about crabbing!! We decided the next time we went crabbing to dedicate the video to answering some of those questions! Do crabs feel pain? Why do you throw the crab back without a claw? Can you keep both claws??

Even though the crab doesn't feel pain when taking off his claws, I kind of feel bad for him, as he did feel it :(. GREAT video! I sure learned a LOT about stone crabs.

Great video! Very curoius about the bait question. Not that I'll be doing any stone crabbing here in NJ. But the chicken carcass vs fish is a question for me for blue crabs. I have identical twin sisters but you two have way more in common than my sisters. They live on opposite coasts and thats just the begging.

As another commenter mentioned the Stanz Fam has a video where they show how they remove the stone crab claws. I forget so can’t describe but the difference is that with their method the crab ‘releases' the claw on its own, which means the crab doesn’t 'bleed' thus ensuring the crab has a better chance of survival. Not trying to mansplain as I have no experience with stone crabs but you both seem to have a deep concern for sustainable harvest. Fun fact: I chose UM for the sun and warmth. Academics? Fuhgeddaboutit. Your focus on education is a niche people are interested in and to which you both are good teachers. You’re bringing the focus you used in track and academia to the world of boating and fishing. One of my heroes growing up who had the same focus was Jacque Cousteau. He did quite well for himself. BOL.

Question, in a different video you were showing off a stone crab after just harvesting one of the claws and it released its second claw on its own. What is the proper/ legal procedure if the second claw had been under sized in that scenario?
@TimNye850
@TimNye850 3 жыл бұрын
An extensive study determined that when one claw is removed the crab will still engage in combat, thus leaving it at a disadvantage. Whereas, when both claws are removed, the crab will isolate and not engage in combat, giving itself time to regrow both claws. Crazy psychology of crabs, but it’s true. Indeed it is actually better to take both claws. But we also still must abide by size regs on claws for a total approach to management of this fishery.

Package deal... Let's hang out. I wonder if there is a way to simulate the condition where the crab drops his claw. Seems that would be less breakage for the crab. Maybe put some thing in the claw and start tugging like its in a fight. Just a thought...

In my youth I was a scuba instructor. I used to catch crawdads in the local training rock quarry and drop them in the water column in the hopes a bass would eat them. If they swam it was over for them. But, most of the time they just drifted to the bottom like the lobsters. Once on the bottom they would swim quickly away. So, I think the smart ones don't move so as not to draw attention to themselves.
