Gleam light is possibly the most upset I’ve ever been at buying a game. It’s why I’m not buying any of these hollow knight clones until I get a few minutes to actually play them. Gleamlight’s movement and combat felt like I was playing some crappy shovelware game

You can't poggo in deviator. Normal horizontal slashes will automatically give you small boosts into the air in air combat. The only thing i see interesting is the parry mechanic from the demo.

The only thing I don't like about this game (or well, trailer, because the game hasn't come out yet) is that they apparently haven't decided on a drawing style for the entire game. It's as if two artists with different styles had worked on two different projects and in the end decided to mix them into one game. It feels like it's not a polished, carefully crafted game. Yes, making games is hard, yes, we shouldn't criticize a game without having played it, but trailers are supposed to motivate me to buy and play the game they feature. And what I see from this trailer, is a game that obviously copied another game and has a lot of room for improvement in a lot of ways because it looks like a mediocre game tbh.

If them "borrowing" assets from hollow knight is ok with them then me "borrowing" deviator should also be alright with them, right?

The quality of it makes me sad. These artists clearly have talent, but they don’t have original ideas. At that point, just change a few things and call it a fangame. Put in some weird lore tie-ins and you’re done. You now have a game you can legally make no money from!

I thought the game seemed cool and like it was inspired, not ripping off HK.... well at least until I saw the hunter enemy on the thumbnail. like I'm sorry, THE BODY TYPE IS EXACTLY THE SAME IT'S JUST SLIGHTLY SMALLER. AT LEAST *TRY* TO MAKE IT ORIGINAL... I feel like they added that enemy purely to make people wanna play it because we can't fight the hunter in HK making it seem like it does it better since we got something we never got in HK that we wanted. this next bit is just a guess but, I think this game wasn't really made to *not* get caught ripping HK. that was intentional since people are desperate for SS which would cause them to buy the game to tide them over until SS comes out. and or, it seems like a cash grab and it's using SS being delayed as a easy marketing strat and they will prolly desert this after a certain amount is made. or we're all wrong and they'll fix everything and make it more original and potentially a "rival" for HK. not because it'll be THAT good, but because it's good enough to at the minimum pass. I don't think this could ever compare to HK, but I kinda hope I'm wrong and they fix all the copied shit and make the game their own and create something fun.

Honestly, I don't mind this game at all. Played the demo recently and it actually plays well and the way I see it, the more quality metroidvanias out there, the better. Sure it does rip off hollow knight, almost like a re-skin, even despite its few "original" mechanics, but its a decent alternative to HK while Silksong is being developed and for me, its the same with souls games, its hard to find a game that gets its inspiration right and when it does its just more fun games to play in that genre.

Before I get started, I just want to say that it wasn't a pleasant experience to see all the racist stuff here. I suppose it is fair to say that there are a lot of Chinese rip-offs out there, but calling all Chinese people thieves reared by the chi-com would be going too far. And please don't reply to me with a mindless social credit comment. Please don't do that if all someone is doing is trying to clear up harmful stereotypes. Anyways: I went to the Chinese equivalent of KZfaq, Bilibili. The general consensus of the people there seems to be that Deviator copied a lot from Hollow Knight, but it is still more than just a thoughtless cash-grabbing clone. I found some devlogs by the creators of this game, which I found rather interesting. According to them, a major change this game will have is that its combat system will emphasize parries. Personally, I don't think this is enough to make it a "original" game, but I suppose to some people this is enough. Another thing I noticed from the devlogs is that this game's art and concept is actually not completely mindless. The devs showed some concept art and animations in the devlogs, and I'm honestly impressed by some of the things there. The setting and lore are also not that awful. The devs have also addressed the similarities in art style between this game and Hollow Knight in one of the devlogs. This would be quite an odd action if they were merely money-hungry IP thieves. Anyways, my personal conclusion would be that this game is a passion project, but the devs are not very original and are just bad at development. Still, I must give the devs some credit: developing a game you want to develop, even a bad one, takes time and energy. What I've seen on Bilibili has convinced me that Deviator isn't entirely a cash-grab. The devs clearly has tried to put thought into this, unlike, say, the developers of Lotus Knight or Gleamlight. If you want to do some research for yourself, just search up "偏差者" on Bilibili, which is Chinese for "Deviator". That's all. Thanks for reading :D

One issue I take with a lot people criticizing this game is there seems to be this idea that the devs are trying to fool us (3:02: "like c'mon, I don't think anyone is being fooled at this point"). I think it's honestly silly to imply that the devs are trying to sneakily copy Hollow Knight and hoping nobody catches on. HK is easily THE metroidvania of the last 8 years, since its release. Also kinda ridiculous to say that nobody would buy this except for memes or content creation. I hate this idea that every game has to be brand new. I generally judge a game based on how good it is full stop, not how similar it is to the game that inspired it. If this were a free game, even a HK fan game, nobody would care. I don't think it being a commercial game should change any of that. And I would be very surprised if it were actually found to be infringing on HK's IP. See Capcom U.S.A. Inc. v. Data East Corp. where Capcom tried to stop Fighter's History because of it's similarities to SFII. (I think it's safe to say FH's similarities to SFII were on par with Deviator & HK) The courts are generally pretty permissive about what can be allowed. That Hunter-like boss could be an issue tho.

Wanting legal action to be taken for the game is a little too much if you ask me especially when it's not even out and you gloss over just how original the designs look for most of the stuff in the game like even the main character has a pretty original design and I don't think Hollow Knight had rock golems. Using the wording reused enemy asset is really exaggerated as well, it's just the design which is similar, much like Palworld they didn't just completely rip the sprites and put them into the game. Also the platform puzzle you brought up probably was inspired by something else but that doesn't mean that it was stolen and borrowing from other sources is common place either way because nothing is completely original. The last two things I want to say with this big comment is how the footage you show for an example of that one area looking too similar to Silksong doesn't even match up and the only thing I can think you were going for was the platforms have lights underneath them in a similar way. Finally treating this game as if it was a Somari tier bootleg only for money is jumping the gun really fast and really not even giving the devs the ability to make up for their mistakes if we're going to be throwing these claims at them. They really could have just been pushing inspiration a little too much so I feel like we should all be neutral on this and not immediately dogpile.

I actually find it looks preety good and deserves a chance. Also a lot of the footage I have seen in this video seems original and is almost nothing like hollow knight. The only thing resembling it is the artstyle and the creator of the game just might have liked it and incorporated it into their game.
