Today let's talk about why it's hard to make concrete rules when it comes to minimalism. Instead, I'll share the criteria I use when decluttering and simplifying to decide if something stays or goes. (And even then there can be some grey area!)

I know I've commented on this already, but I cannot tell you enough how the inventory concept changed my world! I don't want to have to manage anything extra! It was so freeing to, then, say no to things people want to pass on to me or gift me. It's completely changed my desire to add to the house. I'm sooooo much more content with what we already own. It's been such a help in paring down holiday décor over the course of this past year. Thank you!!!

HONESTLY, I have cleared all my counters, tables, etc and while I LOVE how neat and streamlined my home looks, after a few weeks it started to feel really impersonal. Like okay my house looks like a hotel room so I have begun adding just one framed picture of like the kids, or grandma, or our family picture or just a nice picture I’ve taken with my phone in a simple frame and I like it so much better. It still feels minimal and always makes me smile when I look at them so no stress 😎 about “not being 100% minimal”

I was in Target yesterday and saw their cute advent pillows in the dollar spot. I thought “how cute for the kids and how cute in the living room!” I walked maybe 3 steps with it in my cart and then panicked and quickly put it back. In those couple of steps I remembered all the things Dawn taught me: it’s now Inventory, I’ll have to pack it away and store it off season, I’ll have to find another Xmas thing I own to get rid of to welcome this item, it will be ANOTHER pillow on my couch (ie more visual clutter), AND it would cause a Diderot effect bc my living room actually doesn’t match those colors so I would need a few “extra things” to pull it all together. 😨 I feel so relieved not bringing it home!!

I didn’t buy a tray, I use a Pyrex 9 x 11 glass baking dish. I happened to have 2, not sure why... but it works perfectly. It is smooth on the bottom so it doesn’t scratch the counter, and it is washable, it is clear so not to worry about coordinating colors. I put a washcloth or paper towel s in the bottom, and put all my “teeth” things right in. Win win.

@@carolynnicholls7551 I am a quilter whose KZfaq feed sent me a Crochet Tutorial 2 years ago... Yes,... I now have fabric AND yarn! So here is my view: if your hobby is something you do on a continuous basis... weekly, and is somewhat 'seasonal' (I crochet more in the fall/winter than in the summer) which also determines how often/when you do your hobby, you do need a stash to do projects... 2020 showed me that...for all the reasons we all know!... So here are some ideas: Keep the yarn that you love and have patterns for Crochet once a week to get back into the groove Join (when we can again) a Guild or a Knit group at your local library Find a super easy fast pattern for scarf making, and when you watch tv/Netflix at night... do a 1 row repeat pattern - donate these scarves to Shelters/Homeless/Church charities for Missions trips etc. If you just don't want to "yarn' anymore, donate to a local Knit and Stitch Club or goodwill and be done with it... look on Craigslist etc. to see if people are looking for yarn for free and donate!

For my friend, becoming a minimalist meant buying candles and burning them. Because for years, she’d have this candles but never felt like she could burn them. So when she became a minimalist, she realized she COULD and SHOULD use the candles for their purpose, which is to burn and give off light. So now, they’re a great gift to give her. Her mom just got her four candles and candle holders for her mantle that look AMAZING. And now she’s able to enjoy them for what they are. Interestingly, candle light is huge in Hygge because the lower light is relaxing.

I have a similar-ish story. I'm not becoming a minimalist but I AM Konmari-ing everything I own, and I'm finally accepting that sometimes i will buy things with the intention that they will be in my life for a season, not for forever. I have a couple of self-help decks of flash cards I am using to work through current problems that I have, and I am guessing I will probably get five years' use or so out of them, but after their purpose for me is fulfilled, I won't need to keep them anymore and I can pass them on to someone else. The old me would keep them forever anyway, but the new me is just going to joyfully use what I need from them and move forward.

Your message was such an eye opener for me.I applied this to the set of canisters sitting on my kitchen counter. I have used these out of habit for over ten years, but store the portion I can't fill in an airtight container in the pantry. For years, I have dealt with grease splatter from the stove nearby or flung batter from the mixing bowl, floured hands touching the clamp to open, giving me more work of wiping them down....polishing the lids...and moving them to clean underneath. Why have I continued to do this, when it is just as easy to grab the airtight container and measure with a scoop?

How about a “getting ready basket”? Put all your creams etc in a basket that you take out of the cupboard and put it on the side when you use it, and then straight back in the cupboard when you are done? And then it’s just the tooth brush that’s out on the side the whole time.

I started doing this when I couldn’t keep my makeup or skincare products in my vanity because of a very curious toddler. I use an art supply bag with handles (it’s got a big compartment in the middle and has six smaller pockets around the outside). I put it on an upper shelf in a bathroom cabinet and I love it! I pull it out, use whatever I need, and then it’s super easy to put away. I’ll probably keep using it even when I no longer have to.

I have found listening to these readings so much more effective, because he can pronounce every name, every place, every word with such clarity and his voice really brings every sentence to life. It’s free. I think he recorded it in the 1970’s, and it is truly a gift to the world. Another thing that I was reading on Wikipedia was that he recorded this specifically so people to hear for free. So glad to hear you gals talk about the importance of rest! It’s so true how “altered” we can get when we are tired. Irritable, frustrated, quick to anger and our focus shifts to things that waste our mental energy. I have Narcolepsy so unfortunately I never truly feel rested and rejuvenated, ever. Thankful to others like yourselves for sharing your truths about tiredness. Maybe one day it will help the general population understand a bit what’s it’s like having to live in that kind of mental state every single day. Thank you, love you both. You are always inspiring.❤️

Years ago, my husband encouraged me to find my "Season of Colors." So I did a session and found out that I look very good in pastel colors and neutral off-white. It helped me so much to never buy anything that didn't look good with my skin, even if it looked good on someone else. It makes so much sense because you can shop more practically. The good Lord made beautiful colors and I enjoy them so much, especially the spring flowers!

One thing I wanted to mention to you ladies is the norwax clothes. Those to me are the greatest for cleaning. You do not have to use windex etc on the mirrors or counters. You wet one clothes wipe the mirrors down and then another cloth to dry the mirror. No streaks. Man I just like that so much. I have cleaned homes for years and let me tell you streaks on mirrors after I cleaned them would drive me nuts. The clothes are great because they have a stuff in them to keep bacteria from being a issue in the clothes. Of course you wash them. So check out Norwax clothes. Great item that someone introduced me too.

I liked how you discussed mental clutter. I've been in a Bible reading plan to read my Bible in a year and was finding I was procrastinating on it. I decided to cut out Facebook on my Mobile Phone at the beginning of February. I can still turn on the computer to "keep up" but find I only seem to look at it about once a week in that form rather than multiple times a day. I enjoy your videos with your sister and love to listen to both your insights while cleaning. I like to let the ads play and process what you've said like during an old-fashioned commercial break and before I know it, my cleaning task is wrapping up and so is your video. 💜

Good Beautiful Morning to you both. Thanks for the video. My feeling about sleep as an older mom, myself, is that we tend to stay up late after the babes go to bed so that we can get things done, and we wake early to get alone time... AND we NATURALLY stay alert throughout the night to listen out for our little ones incase they need us. I'm so guilty of not getting enough sleep. BUT we definitely need to remind ourselves that we need to refuel by sleeping and to make that a priority for ourselves, our children, and our God. Thanks for the reminder!

I found you a little bit ago but I just started watching your content on minimizing your home by 80% and I’m getting so encouraged by you Dawn and getting good ideas that work! I can’t express enough how miserable I’ve been over the last 3 years since moving into a bigger house finally, I was a minimalist before I got married but had no idea by husband had a 5 bedroom house in storage! We usually kept most stored in basement for the day we get a bigger house. Many things got ruined and we junked many things but still had so much stuff and I thought the big house would solve the problem. We had 4 kids together since marriage so it’s always been a job maintaining there stuff and going through things to get rid of but I’ve neglected my stuff and I’ve become a bit of a hoarder since my husband keeps everything but I’m ready to stop allowing this to destroy my life any longer! It affects me every day cause I can’t stand to see clutter and it stresses me and feel like a failed in trying to home school my kids, be a good wife and mother cause I constantly am worried about getting the house in order and now I realized the problem is I’m not getting rid of enough stuff I’m constantly moving stuff around and start by pulling everything out of a room and then don’t have the time to finish and then I get discouraged cause I’m so overwhelmed and this is how I feel daily....it’s been a nightmare since marriage. I always tell my husband I was a minimalist and my rule of thumb was have I used it in the last 6 months? If not I give it away! That was always so life changing and I know my husband like how tidy and clean I kept my place, the only thing I never got under control was paper/ mail, when he met me it was all contained in a box cause I knew I had to go through it cause I rip up my address and person info on everything and it’s so tedious and takes time. So I’m going to watch more on your paper system. I just finished going through the last tub of papers till 3 am! I want to entertain and have guests over and have Bible studies forever now but always delay because of needing to get the home in order and I’ve let it intimidate me the last 3 plus years and I surrendered to Jesus fully after falling away in the faith cause literally the messing clutter life I entered into was also full of sin, it goes hand and hand and I know the material shows our spiritual state in so many ways. Since day one I always wanted to help my husband and I’m ready to be the best wife and mother I can be and servant of God # 1 in my life cause I’m determined to do Gods will and God had been telling me to get rid of the stuff and I just know it will rub off on my husband if I just do it! So, thank you for inspiring me and I’m going to use the union method instead of trying to remove everything from a room at once just to get discouraged when I can’t complete the project and have to put it all back into the room so the rest of the house isn’t a mess. So, again thank you cause I was using the wrong approach to it. It may take awhile but as I go through in layers and keep it tidy as I go, I know I will arrive. You truly are an answer to prayer and your sister! I love how she shares her faith and the message on rest really hit home as it’s a subject I’ve studied away now about sabbath rest and confirms what God showed me is he’s our rest( not just a day) but everyday! I can’t wait to get that total peace back in my life so I can reflect it to my kids and husband and be full of joy as I’m not weighed down with material that will only rot away but can truly follow Gods call on my life. Thank you ladies. God bless you abundantly and keep me in prayer please if so appreciate the support on this journey to freedom. 🙌🏼🌅🌸🦋📖🎁💕🛤🙌🏼💋

Jackie, the outpouring of your heart has really touched my heart. You're obviously a loving, conscientious lady, who wants to do her best, and wants to do the right thing. The Lord loves a heart like yours. Often I'll pray, "Lord, I just can't do this. I've tried and tried and I just CAN'T. But we both know that it HAS to get done, so I'm asking You, Lord, please do this. There's nothing You can't do! Please take my hands and my heart and do this. All glory to You, Lord, and thank You!" Then, when things get done, I can only credit the Lord for doing it, because I couldn't do it alone. And you're NOT alone, Jackie. Not only is the Lord always with you, but you have literally worldwide support from all of us who struggle with our possessions and keeping the kind of loving, inviting home that we're created to have. YOU GO GIRL!!!!
