@@GIDIREACTS Moszkowski was a professor of piano at 17 in Berlin, and very popular. But he felt very poorly about this concerto, calling it "worthless". (I think we both agree he was very wrong). He made some very bad financial decisions, lost all his money, and became a hermit. Hermit composers are forgotten quickly no matter how talented they are (Alkan was another such).

One of my favorites of all piano concertos, and to think it lay in obscurity for 100 years before its premier! Moszkowski, like many others without the big name recognition of a Beethoven, Brahms, or Mozart are relegated to languish in anonymity, ignored in favor of playing the same old better known pieces because they are "popular." Thank you for introducing Moszkowski to a new audience. I know it means nothing to him, personally, but it means a lot to music lovers such as myself.

I actually never listened to this, never even know it existed. Moszkowski is famous for his short pieces, his etudes like Etincelles (Sparkles) and they are often played as encores. The rest is almost forgotten it seems. There are so many great piano concertos out there, oh man, and almost every great composer gave us one or more. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Dvorak, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Prokofiev, Saint-Saëns, Gershwin, you name it. Now let me enjoy the Moszkowski!

Its about time classical music has its 21st century renaissance, and your mode of presenting it in this podcast fashion really does help to bridge the gap to promote it to a larger audience. I have had a similar problem of trying to explain classical music to my non-musical friends and always wondered how to do it. this channel is just about right in the way that it does it. keep up the work my guy 🤜🤛

I first became hooked on the Moszkowski Concerto about 50 years ago, when I was 20. My addiction continues to today, and I still consider it to be my favorite piece for piano and orchestra, despite having played virtually all the major piano concerti in the repertoire (I'm a professional orchestral musician, so I've played and heard a LOT of music). Unfortunately, I've never even heard the Moszkowski live; it's just not quite popular enough to have entered the "mainstream" of concert repertoire. Concert audiences only want to hear Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, and Rachmaninov. Not that there's anything wrong with those pieces, but it's nice to vary one's concert diet every once in a while. This recording is indeed very good (and adding the score to read along is certainly a plus) but I would suggest you check out the Michael Ponti recording. He was a pianist who was known for tackling all the Romantic pieces that, at the time (1960s-70s), nobody else would play. His version of this piece is nothing short of electrifying. He playing many sections at a hair-raising velocity that's truly amazing, and with great POWER.

Wow, a big thank-you to whoever recommended this one to you! One of my all-time favourite piano concertos! As you said, every movement is so strong and the whole piece is so packed with ideas that you don't even notice the time passing. Personally, my favourite recording is by David Bar-Illan because of the flow and sense of forward motion (despite some moments of questionable ensemble with the orchestra, but there's always a trade-off, I suppose).

Thankyou ! Thankyou for highlighting this concerto ! And especially taking the trouble to show the 2 piano core ! I'm so glad this channel exists ! When I was about ten my teacher had her best student plaMoskowsky's En Automne .It is still a favorite of mine and I can play it still. And later I heardJosef Hofmann play Guitarre and then the great famous Spanish Rhapsody in 1937 on a really famous to pianists Curtis recital recorded we are all so lucky . Noone sounds like Hofmann ,not Lhevinne in all his perfection or even Rachmaninoff not even Horowitz had his total knowhow and guess what Hofmann studied not only with Anton Rubinstein in Berlin but as a youngster he studied with this same chestnut composer who at the turn of the century knew many of his pieces were always on every student and professional musician's programmes . I discovered this concerto in the early 2000's when Naxos and a few other newer labels started putting out forgotten Romantic era concertos . Check out Kalkbrenner and especially Scharwenka last 2 concrti 3 and the No.4 which used to be played all the time and be sure to hear Hofmann make the 4th Rubinstein concerto come alive as noone has (it's been recorded at least 6 maybe 7 timesMichaelPonti,Lowenthtal,Triconfonti the Italian pianist now specializing in Rubinstein's music ! ) but noone gives it the magic it needs but Hofmann . It doesn't even sound like the same music with he and the great Fritz Reiner ! There is a lot of other Moskowsky worth hearing the Entincelles from the op.71? Etudes (Ilana Veredrecorded all of these; such a fantastic musician with a great left hand ) and so much else. Also Moscheles was a good friend of Chopin and wrote some of the most charming music ever for the salon amateur virtuoso .

Thank you for bringing attention to this gem. I see it as a light, dreamy alternative to Rach 2 & 3 and Brahms 1 & 2 (same difficulty as well... pretty incredible). It's one of those relatively (not in common repertoire) underground concertos that actually works... I don't think there's many of them that deserve a full audience and doubt that there's any other at this level (not sure if you could count Scriabin's, though...).

Have you heard/reacted to Bach’a Chaconne in D Minor? It’s the fifth movement from his second partita for solo violin. Brahms once said something to the effect that if he was able to compose something as good as the chaconne, he would surely drive himself mad. My personal favourite is the Itzhak Perlman recording. Too many basic scales and arpeggios. Too much repetition of patterns and sequences. The great composers don’t just use passage work mindlessly there is an emphasis on thematic construction and development of ideas. Even the passage work is developed in interesting ways by the masters. Harmonic rhythm, etc is very predictable etc. Theme construction is also very predictable with symmetrical repetitions and lacking in originality or motives that develop melodically. Maybe others don’t hear these problems but that stand out as obvious weaknesses in his writing to myself.
