Man, I keep telling myself I am going to get one of those oil filter cutter-opener things and haven't done it yet. Sure is a lot easier/neater than any other method. Good video! Ps: we cut filters open often if there's ANY contaminants in our engines, way easier than a 20K$ rebuild.

This is incredibly funny timing. A few weeks ago my daughter asked me to help her change her oil and asked about what oil and filter she should get. I told her to check her manual to find out what type and amount of oil she needed and for her filter to get any that do not have the word FRAM written on them. She called me from the store confused saying that ALL the filters say FRAM on them and "the guy behind the counter says they are all the same and a filter is a filter" and she asked me what she should do. I told her to leave that store and head out of the parking lot, take a left at the next intersection and go to NAPA and tell them you want the least expensive oil filter that is not made by FRAM. She did what I said and told me the guy at NAPA laughed out loud when she told him "My daddy says I need to get a new oil filter made by anyone other than FRAM" and when she was checking out he said to her "Tell your daddy he gives good advice". Warmed my heart that my little girl listens.

@teamgreen02

Right, the spring plate is a lighter duty and less expensive way to build the filter. The springs just keep everything pressed together in the can. Coil springs are the best for heavy duty applications.

Was gonna say the same thing but I was pretty sure someone was gonna say it. There is way more than one way to make a spring.... many are not the spring spiral shape. If you ever seen a corvette front leaf spring, it is a single long curved piece of "something" that goes from drivers side to passenger side. And that's a sports car. I never realized that until I saw one.

Nice thorough Recap On the Oil Filters @Stephen Cox
@teamgreen02
@teamgreen02 4 жыл бұрын
The spring in the bottom of the can is used to seal the grommet to the baffle plate and end cap of the filter. It is not used as a bypass for the oil. If there were a bypass valve it would typically be in the bottom end cap of the filter. In this case, the engine would have a bypass valve built in that would open and continue to supply oil if the filter were to become plugged. Generally, the coil springs are used in heavy duty applications and the spring plate in automotive or light duty applications.

The filters with the white media is a blend with fiberglass and that plastic mesh you see inside. The mesh is ultrasonically welded together and then the glue strip around the outside is to help keep the elements shape during production. The string you saw is the same principle. The element paper is flipped around the core during production and sometimes is a challenge to get to stay in place. The string keeps it tight before the endcaps are put on.

The reason I ask is Fordtechmakuloko says that there are knockoff Motorcraft parts for sale on Amazon, he shows the k knockoff and the O.E.M parts and packaging side by side and the differences in the parts are fairly easy to see but the packaging differences are much harder to see. Awesome video! I would like to add personal experience to the info you put out there. When I inspect filters that have been in service, the largest factors I see are the consistency in the glue job and quality of glue. When combined with the quality of the filter media in the standard paper filters, it puts me in 120% agreement with your findings...aside from the flat spring. I actually prefer the flat style spring. It is more forgiving and helps keep the seal better if a filter becomes damaged in service and goes unnoticed.

I’ve been a construction eq mechanic for 26 years and back in the teir one days seldom had oil filter fails,it was when manufacturers went to electronic injection and fuel dilution dropped so they all went to 500 hr service intervals instead of 250,since then I started seeing fails,I currently work for komatsu and have had to sadly void warranty’s due to that lovely orange filter you had I’ve seen the media break up and clog oil journals and take bearings out of 80g motors multiple times,we now advise our customers not to ever use them.

Machines that use oil that aren't cars monitor their oil change interval by hours of use instead of miles of use. I install engine mounted air compressors that use an air/oil separator with a coalescing filter and a plain oil filter for the compressor oil, these compressors get an oil change at 250 hours of use and another service and oil change at 400 hours. Some machines have hour tickers on them that count hours by the 10th most the time. It's best when the compressor change lines up with the engine oil change 2 birds 1 stone👍

Those filters do not have bypass valves and will not go into bypass. The leaf spring and coil springs are not bypass springs. They are strictly for keeping the element tight against the base plates. Filters that have bypass valves will sometimes have the valves built into the bottom leaf spring or bottom end cap of the cartridge. Some filters have the bypass on the top between the top plate and the cartridge mostly Motorcraft. The filters in this video do not have or require bypass valves.

I think one other thing is much more important than any filter.......... it is that you freaking change the darn thing !!!! I personally change my oilfilter on my daily drivers monthly because $5-$10 is much much cheaper than any engine repair itself. Also on the site note any modern Gas Engine run them only on Full Synthetic period to keep sludge as a minimum. Those are my most important things I tell every customer of mine. Oil changes I do every quarter because Full Synthetic oil just doesn't break down as fast from it's properties but I want to ensure my filter catches any particle and debris and filters it out of my engine oil.

Well, looking at the filters for that particular engine, I don't see a helluvalot of difference between them. Maybe it is just the smaller ones that the orange bad guys cheap out on? I put Motorcraft filters on my 09 f150 and have switched to Wix filters on my 05 murano and 1950 f-1 pickup with a 1983 200 6 cyl in it. I can't seem to figure out which ford filter goes on a 200 6 for some reason. The Ford filter costs me about 5 bucks and the others about 9 at the local Wal-mart.

One of the biggest problems with the Fram filters from 10 or maybe 20 years ago was that they used really thin metal for outside was super thin. This would let them puncture easily and rust through really quickly. Looks like, at least for those big diesel filters, they fixed that issue. It of course was a cost cutting measure, thinner metal was less costly. When my cars get out of warranty, I switch from OEM filter to Mobil, the Mobil brand seems to be decent enough for normal consumer uses. Only OEM Harley filters though, hard to beat them on performance per price.

I had a 2006 Saturn Ion with 298k miles before I bought a new car. I used Mobil 1 full synthetic and changed the oil every 3k miles with a Fram tough quart oil filter. Saturn engine doesn’t use the same type of oil filter like every engine has. It’s internal. You unscrew a plastic cap and drop the filter in. I looked at all different types of brand on that style filter and they were all the same. Plastic with cardboard.

@@xephael3485 Exactly. Fram is the #1 producer of oil filters, they have their manufacturing process streamlined to make them the best quality they can yet at a reasonable cost. The orange Fram filter is actually part of Fram's Wear Guard series of filters, they just put them in the Extra Guard boxes for manufacturing cost savings, but as Steven showed, it has the longest filter media, and similar construction as the Wix/Napa filters, yet there has to be something always wrong with Fram, just because people hear from people who heard from people who....etc. Personally, I do use the Fram Ultra Synthetic filters in my vehicles and have had very good luck with them. Ultra Synthetic filters are actually double lined synthetic filters which gives them additional filtering surfaces, and they are usually rated at 99+% filtration at 20 microns. Pretty much no other filter is going to have that level of filtration. Excellent quality/priced filters. If you're concerned about quality, run the Fram Ultra Synthetic. Even Steven had to admit it's a good quality filter.

I grew up in my Dad's excavating business. We rutainly cut open the used filters looking for metalic particles. We also comapred construction. Cat filters always had way more filter media than any others. We used DA brand lubricants and as part of the deal they provided sample cans that we sent to their lab. Each sample was anylized for contaminants and reported by quantity. Water, antifreeze, viscosity, carbon, metals etc. were reported. If there was something indicating a serious ploblem we would get a phone call. For a fee they would do the same for any oil. They didn't ask what brand or anything else. One of our employees came from a farm. He brought used oil from their propane fired irrigation engines. It always failed the tests. The oil was a brand typically sold to farmers. Heavy construction equipment is used much differently than a car or pickup. Engines are run full throttle near full load all day long. I don't know how many hours the current engines get but way back when I was in the business they would go 10,000 hours between overhauls. Hour meters count revolutions, not time. So an hour was the # of revs that would take place in one hour at goverened speed.
