Eagle or Vulture? Some fear this gorgeous bird. Some even believe her capable of carrying off a young lam. Thus the nickname Lammergeier.
However, this beautiful bird, the Bearded Vulture, is a bone eater. Yes, she climbs to amazing heights to drop bones onto rocks to break them into more edible pieces (and to get at the marrow.)
Sadly, she's also in trouble. Due to habitat loss and other human activity her species is in serious decline. Enter Shannon Hoffman and her team from Bred4theWild. Each winter they literally risk life and limb to harvest second eggs for the Bearded Vulture breeding program. The goal? To release subsequent generations in strategic places to strengthen wild populations.
