We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.
Our 6 frame overwintered nucleus colonies sell out very fast every year so early ordering is advisable.

Why not add the cork to a dummy board? You could remove two frames for the winter and add them back in the spring. I run on a brood and a half so would have to do that for both boxes. Great idea.

Lot of work and cost for less than a R-4 increase. With no clear way to seam/seal it. And a general rule for housing (heat rises) is to have three times as much insulation on the ceiling/roof compared to the walls. My 2 cents.

Interesting idea , using as an all year round system would save a lot of messing about in late autumn with the hives . Your right about having the opposite affect in the summer months . I’ve gone into airtight timber frame houses under construction on summer mornings and you would have to open windows or doors to heat them up . Temperature difference really noticeable. Will keep an eye on the Nuc you put in this hive and watch the series of videos you do on it with great interest . Thanks Laurence.

Good idea, but could be improved by painting the outer cork boards white one side and black on the other. Swap them around summer/winter too improve heat transfer to suit the season.

I think you've come up with a fantastic solution to hive insulation. Two questions: do you really think the bees would chew it or are you worried about them coming into contact with the cork? And do you think it might be possible to make boxes from scratch from thicker cork?

I look forward to seeing how this holds up. I recon frost will make it fall apart. I hope it doesn't though. I've just got hold of 2" polystyrene sheet (from under an old gym floor). I'm going to clad hives in that (plus some protective outer material). Me thinks, insulation is the way to go. More insulation means less condensation means less need for ventilation means less wasted heat means fewer winter stores consumed.

Everything your saying about insulation is completely correct and cork is a fantastic alternative to poly. Inside the hive it can encourage propolis for a hygiene envelope around the colony.

Very interesting as cedar nationals. For this winter i have used top insulation, before that I didn’t use any so will be interesting to see how they fair when i can get in the hives towards the end of March. I was thinking of using 1” dummy boards to reduce the space and provide a bit of insulation but this method provides al round protection so i will be following this closely. Love the channel and Q&A sessions :)

Cork over time will absorb rain in wet months on the outside. Wet insulation is worse than no insulation. I’m not sure if painting will stop or keep moisture in, you need to focus on the gaps on the edge. That’s why KINGSPAN is used it’s “closed cell” so it doesn’t absorb moisture like expanded polystyrene which is “open cell.”
@BlackMountainHoney
@BlackMountainHoney 2 жыл бұрын
I think I'm going to tweak the design to clad the outside with 3mm ply over the top just to ensure it remains dry and beneficial to the bees

@@BlackMountainHoney FYI “Cork does absorb water. It’s impermeable but can resist water. It will soak in water and become weighty when you put it in water. However, cork has a reputation in the wine industry since it was used for making wine stoppers. People used it to make things water-resistant and slightly waterproof.”
@BlackMountainHoney

@@sinisterhipp0 Like I said, on a horizontal face where it can sit, it will absorb and swell. I'd say on a vertical face it should resist it quite well

I'm interested to see how this works. My concern is that I would think cork sheet is made with internal use in mind, so the adhesive in it might not hold up to getting damp and drying out several times. But good to see people trying out new ideas all the same. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong.

I live in Southwest Iowa and it gets anywhere from 40°F/9°C to -20°F/-30°C in the winter and I never insulated and never have any problems. But I do use quilt boards to regulate moisture which will kill your bees faster than the cold.
@BlackMountainHoney
@BlackMountainHoney 2 жыл бұрын
I always see insulation as a way of helping the bees. They can cope with severe cold, but its easier for them to regulate temperature when nicely insulated. Same applies in the summer - easier to keep the hive cool. The key is making sure the space above the cluster is the most insulated part to ensure condensation forms on the side walls and tracks out of the hive. Moisture boards are then not needed as all condensation has a downwards route out. I appreciate there are lots of different ways to control moisture/ventilation in the hive though. Not saying the way I do it is right, just providing detail as to why we do it
