I’ve given my 300sqm of green / blue couch it’s final lightish scalp (one notch higher than for a dirt-level full reno) to thin it out & reset things around mid April this year & last year and it has really done well through the winter .. takes a little longer to recover than in summer, even here in Qld, but it’s worth it
@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn Жыл бұрын
Are you finding that this year even up there your season has cooled off earlier than last? I know even out in Oakey Qld they have had some very cold mornings -4c etc
@lukepownall7292
@lukepownall7292 Жыл бұрын
@@theaussielawn the daytime / maximum temps for April & May have been right around average but the minimums have been quite a bit cooler than average (May finished with a -3 differential on its long term minimum average) .. the really big difference this year from last year has been the rainfall.. last year we had the wettest May on record with around 620mm which more than triple the May average.. This year we had a much more moderate amount after a drier than average April and March.. Having lower than average rainfall through the cooler months just doesn’t pose the same problems it does in warmer times because things don’t dry out anywhere near as quickly.. some spots on my lawn took forever to dry through winter last year after the drenching they copped in May

Nice work, I’m a fan of end of season renovations, generally around early April for me. I just did the same on my kikuyu property over here in the west, scarify and heavy canopy reduction, specifically the surrounds early may, knowing my turf like yourself have been able to get full recovery, though a little thin in some areas it will be covered within the next 2 weeks. Great work to you 👍

@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn Жыл бұрын
Here in AUS it's illegal to dock the tails of dogs. But honestly I love that Max has his tail You can read so so much about his mood by the way he holds his tail. All that would be lost on a dog with its tail docked.

When would be a good time to use granular urea on a healthy buffalo lawn? Also, I note you’re using the granular version on your lawn - given temps are already cold, wont the granulars just sit there and not be broken down as the temps aren’t warm enough for the granulars to be activated? Wouldn’t liquid be the better option? Just curious as Ben Simms raves about liquid when it’s cold and a “waste of granulars” if temps are cold..
@mitch_the_rookie
@mitch_the_rookie Жыл бұрын
Good point. The urea dessolves in water, in this case from the irrigation and sits in the soil profile, as the plant demands water the Nitrogen is taken up by the roots. The plant demands less water at this time of year so it will be taken up slower than in hot weather. Ben is spoon feeding with liquids, if you tried to spray the rate BK put out (2kg/100m^2) the turf would likely be burnt real bad.
@australianlawnfanatics3535
@australianlawnfanatics3535 Жыл бұрын
This form of granular is water soluble and releases very quickly. A slow response or controlled release granular won’t feed the plant as well in cooler temperatures but that can also depend on what one you choose. An autumn or winter granular that’s designed for cooler temperatures will be higher in P and K and very low in N as that’s what the lawn requires for those seasons.
@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn Жыл бұрын
I really don't recommend Urea as a general use fertiliser. I keep it specifically for special situations. My climate is worlds apart from Ben's in Orange and when this video was filmed our temps were still acceptable for the use of granular style products. In the update video due on Saturday you'll hear me talking bout the switch to liquid applications for the exact reason you mentioned above.
