The exciting finale of the 2019 Grand Chess Tour will once again be fought out as part of the London Chess Classic. The semi-finals will feature the 4 top players from the seven regular season tour events with each match consisting of classical, rapid and blitz games. The players will be competing for an enhanced prize fund totalling USD 350,000 this year with the winner taking home an impressive purse of USD 150,000. Members of the public will be able to purchase tickets to attend as spectators.
Point Breakdown
Points are allocated to each game within the respective matches as follows:
6 points for a win, 3 points for a draw and 0 points for a loss in the 2 Classic games.
4 points for a win, 2 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss in the 2 Rapid games; and
2 point for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss in the 4 Blitz games.

It seems that Ding is positioning himself to be the next challenger for the World Championship. He's the only one in the top 10 who has shown a gradual but generally consistent rise in skill over the last year. His board skills are about on par with Carlsen's. He also has the steely composure and youthful stamina needed for a championship match. If I were going to place a bet on who is the next challenger (and possibly new champion), this is the guy I'd put my money on.

3:23 -- b4 just blunders the pawn. Much better was Nxd5 (removing one of the attackers of the b4 square), and only pushing b4 after the bishop has recaptured the knight.

Ding's moves at a3 and f3 were beautiful. With these two pawn moves, Ding paralyzed Levon's board. Both of his bishops were inactive. The more I see his chess games the more I enjoy them. Cheers!

Levon's queenside setup mid video reminds me a little of some of Ivanchuk's opponents in his most dominant games - including to some extent his immortal against Kasparov. There isn't a smoking gun "bad move" from Aronian in reaching the position, but then you look at white's setup and have to remind yourself that you're looking at one of the strongest grandmasters of the generation playing as white.

"A little passive, but if it works, it works..." except that it doesn't and within about five moves Aronian's position is just UGLY: cramped, white-square bishop trapped and shutting the other rook out of the game, and waiting for Ding to stick some needles in the squirming tangle.

Always funny when worse players try to get an advantage by playing wacky openings... as if they had more chances in a more complicated position against a stronger player. I suppose the best way to take a better player down is by playing as accurately as possible and trying to get in their head psychologically by playing bold moves.
