In todays video i was luckily enough invited to go to Shaun Hartley's farm and check out his new GEA robots. Is this the future of dairy farming?
The link for the robots and GEA Farm Technologies who make them is…www.gea.com/en/products/milki...
These robots use the least energy, are super durable and mean cows are super comfortable during milking.
NOTE: All regulations and social distancing rules was adhered to at the time of filming this video.

Those robotic milking machines are amazing. You don’t really have to do anything except keep an eye on the process. Our cows always came in the milk house to be milked in the same order every time. We had a few that didn’t want to come in at all. Our best milkers were always the first in.

There are different markets & farms really have to choose carefully to serve those markets. My perception is that the market for pastured milk is growing. The brutal truth is that producing milk for the big dairy companies or supermarkets is a knife edge between profit & loss. It’s often a case of go big or stop. 😬

we are also experimenting with robot milking and grazing. and thats an pretty precise job. important is having good grass quality and perfect feed in the barn and robot. so that cows will want to come back to the robot. having good structured feed to with corn starch or other to keep the cows from the grass shits and healthy also is the robot placement in the barn and the situation where you place them and allow for the cows to easily get into the pastures, preferably the barn has to be situated in the middle of some nice pastures so that the cows can leisurely graze around the barn and dont have to walk an long route to return to the robot. good cow/ and cow hoof health preferred that the cows comfortably walk around reduces pick up cows of course hoof health. and laying down rubber and making good clean walking patch of concrete or rubber matts. keeping stones and rubble away to reduce hoof damages from walking.

Very impressed by the calmness of the cows. I have seen a much bigger (550 cows) shed than this in NZ which was also pretty good. I am not convinced that zero grazing is always the answer, but in this very wet area it may be appropriate. In a drier climate some outdoor summer grazing might be better but cows have four hooves each and the bigger herds would tear the ground to ribbons. If housewives want cheap milk this will be the future, otherwise they will have to pay more.

Thats really cool! When I was a little girl, my grandparents were still milking by hand. They had a heard of about 75 dairy cows. As I got a bit older, they went to milk machines, then they were still having to lug heavy milker cans to the bulk tank, but they could then milk 2 cows at once, 1 on each side of the milker. And had to be connected, and disconnected, cleaned, etc in between each milker use and in between cows. They were then at about 100 cows. When I was in High school, they switched to having a vacuum milk system that directly dumped all of the milk directly into the bulk tank by the tube. At that point, they were milking about 200 head. You could see the entire milk lines from the stantion areas to the bulk tank because the lines were all clear, you could watch it move from the milker on the cows all the way until it got into the bulk tank. The milkers still had to be cleaned in between each set of cows, but then at least, it was ONLY the actual milker parts, that were much smaller than the ones that attatched to the top of the milk cans. They still had to wash all of the cows by hand prior to milking twice a day. This system would have been a DREAM come true for them! Im so tempted to restart in the (family) dairy farming buisness! I wonder if it would be a good idea, here in the US. Any info or ideas? Thanks in advance.

When seeing a setup like that and even your own were they come in of their own accord to be milked I can not see how there are still people who believe they are forced

When buying robots also ask about back up as if it brakes down your cows still need to be milked. It would be good to look at more brands.

One has a surplus of milking stations, so one or two down for service and repair is not a problem. A practice used with most mechanical management.

Found this really interesting. Was brought up on a farmbut not a dairy one. Did visit a relatives dairy which was a parlour like yours which was interesting as a kid. This is just taking it to a whole new level. Loved the way that the cows were waiting to enter the milking area without any assistance. The feeding robot is a great idea for keeping the feed close to the cows. Keep up the great work Tom and would love to see more on this if you get the chance to go to GEA in Germany.
