Interface sounds crystalline. You can not only hear your vocals but can also see your frequency. This feature makes texture of s sound. U87AI has similar vocals texture and hence is a legendary CM.

This sounds great and the smart gain, i/o possibilities and the software look top notch. I've been weighing up adding an ASP800 to work alongside my id14 but maybe I should add this? Mmmmm.

I saw another EVO 16 vs. Lunch box API 512c's and SSL Converters $1000 vs $10,000 . The guy owned both Systems he said it really sounded JUST AS GOOD as the API-SSL system. Truely remarkable!!!

I think I saw that too. I think there’s a flatness to the low end on these after spending more time using them but ironically it’s nothing I can’t dial back in with my 500 series API EQs.

Amazing product. Love my Evo 8, but this one can be a nice addition to my mobile setup. It’s possible to route the preamps to the adat output to use it as an external preamp module?

@@EdThorne That's kinda how I see it too. Like we spend all our youths hammering away, right in the middle of the band. Every gig and rehearsal. And in that time it forges (in some, not all of course) a sense of balance in a band's sound.

I'm a fan of this one; this is why I was curious about something: are the line inputs on the EVO16/SP8 such that they bypass the mic preamp when you plug a TRS connector into them, or do they feed into the preamp anyway?

yeah id think these days running midi straight into the box with USB is the usual. lots of companies aren't concerning interface with midi because its so easy to run direct

@@rjb7569 im just saying, today most midi interfaces use a USB port. I think audient is looking at the majority of users this is geared towards. Most people who need 5 pin for sysex dumps or whatever, already have setups for this. if 90 percent of users have to pay an extra 14 dollars so 10 percent can have a 5 pin port, it doesnt make business sense. just my opinion

Thanks, Bryan. I use OBS for screen capturing. I have to route my output to 1&2 as inputs in Console for my Apollo to capture the audio correctly.

I wasn't much bothered by smart gain (I guess it's more handy with a multi-channel device), but the 4 headphone mix is killer, here! V. impressed. Thanks for the review.

Great vid Ed , totally agree with your synopsis it's an incredible product for the money you're definitely getting more for less absolutely with the amount of synths I have it has an instant appeal with it's expandability would I like one ? Hell yes !!

I’m thinking about returning my evo 16 because the monitor outputs are not loud. It has a +12dbu max output when any other interface of quality has +18dbu or more. So this is actually very low volume.

@@EdThorne Adam A7x and Focal Shape 40s. I have the Evo app installed. I have the evo connected to my Audient Nero. My previous interface was a Steinberg ur816c and I had the volume turned all the way up on the interface (as I do the evo) and would control it from the Nero. So far I have a massive dip in volume with the Evo compared to the ur816c

If I shut down the computer and turn it back on the next day, the evo16 is disconnected. Looking at it, the power of the Evo16 is automatically shut down. Does this problem only happen to me?

@@flipnap2112 That‘s only the case, if you‘re running it at 192kHz - which the evo isn‘t even capable of.. biggest plus for me: It runs with an usb to 9v adapter - completely of the grid

Great review! This looks awesome! Cannot get over the price!! I have an Apollo twin……do you know if the EVO 16 would be happy as an ADAT extension? I could then use the EVO16 for location recording 🤔🤞🏻

Thanks, Jon. It’s not obvious to me in the software app of the 16 can be used as an ADAT extension, I need a deeper look. Can’t go wrong with an ASP though for that purpose.

@@EdThorne Thanks Ed. I was looking at the Arturia Audiofuse 8Pre as I’d love to have an 8 channel interface to take out with me and a MacBook……and to keep my Apollo in the studio. But the Audiofuse doesn’t seem to be available anywhere……then this popped up. I’ve just submitted a question to Audient so we’ll see! Thanks for getting back to me though 👍

Hi Ed, thanks for all the info. I’ve been watching all your videos. They are very helpful,but I’m stuck right now between Evo 16 and UA volt 476p. Would you consider doing a shootout between the two. I know the differences,however; it the sound I believe that counts the most in the end. What is your opinion on this? Thanks ,Danny S

Hi Danny, thanks for the kind words. I hope the content is helpful. Personally I think the Volt preamps with Vintage mode sound better and the compressor is useful. However, Smart-Gain is very useful (especially when tracking drums on your own like I do). Conversion wise they’re very similar. Headphone amp wise I’d say the Volt has it for volume but the monitor mixing on the Evo is super useful. I don’t quite understand why every brand doesn’t offer this now. Tough call over all. I doubt I’ll be able to do a specific comparison between these two.

You could set up an Aggregate device but you’d only be able to monitor through one or the other. It’s unclear to me atm if EVO16 can be used as an ADAT expansion. In theory it’s possible but I couldn’t get it set up when I looked into it.

It’s not Possible to bypass the preamps but using line-ins with minimum gain will minimise their influence on the sound in. The preamps have very little colouration.

I believe the two inputs in the front run through a JFET line in bypassing the other mic pres, sounds close to a valve amp. I doubt anything like this will offer a raw converter. probably have to go with an RME or something.

Smart gain is a bit of a gimic really. When recording something like a drum kit you'll need to check things like phasing so its not really going to save much time. Its not even a new thing, roland did it 10 years ago on the studio-capture

Recording drums on your own, as I do, setting gains is a ball ache. This takes the hassle out. You’d have to phase align and check anyway, auto-gain or not. This just makes things quicker. Defo not a gimmick.

I have and id22 and the converters on it and the 44 are amazing. I cant find what type of converters theyre using on this thing but the difference is probably VERY subtle. I would think with the I/O's on the EVO and the auto gain stuff id go for the EVO. especially if you have a rack. been hearing REALLY good stuff about this.

@@EdThorne Audient would not tell me what converters were used, just as they would not on the latest id44, as they may have been changed from the original converters. Red flagged them for that.

@@rjb7569 I forget which converters the ID44 uses but they aren't the Burr brown converters that's used on the ID22. The ID44 reportedly sounds a little clearer but harsh in the top end.

Hmm, this is really cool. My plan for awhile now was to get an iD44 and a couple of the ASP800 or 880 preamps to add to it for being able to track full bands and such. This might be a better option and I’d end up with 4 additional inputs if needed… How does this really stack up against its iD brethren, Ed?

It’s good competition but the iD has superior converters and pres (more coloured at least, if you want that). I will do an ASP vs EVO16 comparison I’m sure!

ID is industrial recommended interface. ID is clean and EVO is little crystalline. Both have their own texture. Combination of ID+ 880 will serve you the best. You can also add EVO to your gear. Then see how the cat jumps.

probably through the DAW and ID software matrix routers. just send to outputs xx and return back to xx in for pre tracked. for live I dont see any sends like I have on my id44. bummer but.. cant win em all

If you’re just recording up to two channels, mixing and mastering, no. The Duet has superior converters and preamps. If you need to track up 24 inputs at a time - then yes.

When you Register the product you can request rack ears from Audient who will send them out for free. Fits 19” racks. 1U.

You can connect a Kemper for example via the Optical inputs/outputs.

@@EdThorne for those reading who want a little more of an explanation - I wasn't aware of this but almost any audio interface that has optical - you can use a optical to s/pdif converter to use your s/pdif connections. The converter is pretty cheap - but it has to be powered as well which adds more connections - but it will work.

Listening through my phone, so... Drum sounds appear a bit muffled. Your speaking voice on narration, for example, has the crispness the drum recording does not. Different interface? Again, through my phone.

most have an external midi interface for that if they have many synths, which most vintage lovers do :) But yeah would have been nice still to have midi in and out.
