I put it to you why I truly believe this is the first modification beyond tyres + alignment that you should budget for when buying or thinking of your next NC MX-5 modifcation.
It might not be as exciting as the firm favourites but it does unlock the ability to go on trackdays with greater peace of mind and you'll probably keep your skull in a rollover this way!
It's a totally different video to my normal content, let me know your thoughts and what mods you'd prioritise!

UPDATES - PLEASE READ: #1 It passed its MOT! #2 Safety of hitting your head on the bar. Evzen and Kuba make a very valid point that there are incidents where people have hit their heads on the rollbar in freak accidents and it's why I would never recommend a rollcage for a road car. I recommend assessing this to you and where you sit in your seat but also to research and install rollbar padding (non-helmet as apparently FIA helmet style is very hard!) In my instance personally, my head (even when I fling myself around) doesn't reach the rollbar behind me, there's enough headrest most of the way up my head that I can't bend my head around a corner so to speak. BUT someone in a forum said that they were of this belief and found they hit their head against all odds with a rear-end collision. I'm not qualified in crash safety but it would appear to be advisable to put as much foam as possible around a rollbar in case this happens. Don't buy the foam designed for race helmets as it's actually too firm for the human head and has a similar effect. #2 Seatbelt retention - Grant from FC Fabrications has watched the video and is already working on a new seatbelt guide that should (in theory) be able to replace the already flawed, grippy ones on the sides of the seats. We found on the phone that if I took the belt out of the plastic guides it retracted with full vim. The belts like one or the other, not both currently. So fix should be there soon but this has gone a little quiet... #3 Final thing to note, the plastic wind deflector only goes 80% of the way up, so doesn't click in place anymore. Not an issue until you're at 70mph where it (over time) slowly makes its way down to about 45 degrees. Otherwise, as someone with no qualifications in car safety and despite the rollbar headbutting dangers (really more applicable to prior MX-5 model retrofits) I'm still glad I have many inches of rollover protection above my head now rather than below. Thanks for watching and thank you for bringing up the perfectly solid counterargument guys. #4 Thank you for the fantastic reception, I'll be sure to do more MX-5 content soon!

This was a great video for anyone that has second thoughts of buying this great car but has safety concerns. Had a friend who rolled over with an Alfa spider and barely made it and had to spend 6 months in hospital... Smart w roll bar in combo w lowering the seats. I see that the bar is slightly curved in plan which makes it stronger. The more curved and pushed out it will start to act also as a side impact protection system. Perhaps there is some further development to be done?

Re negs, another Brit (he says "righty tightly, lefty loosey) pointed out that behind the front and rear bumpers, rust grows. You need to unbolt the actual bumper from the chassis to eliminate it. @petrolpoodle6617
@petrolpoodle6617 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Buzzman, Thanks so much for the kind words! Essentially compared to just getting your tracking done on a normal car, the MX-5 has clever multi-link suspension (or whatever term my tired brain is unable to remember at this moment) where there are many, many factors they can tweak to the suspension. People refer to it as getting a proper alignment. A good MX-5 specialist (look up your local one if you're interested) will be able to choose a fast road alignment which means it's not so aggressive that you'd only want it on a track but it'd also be far better suited to track driving and fast B road driving than the standard alignment. It's remarkable what a difference it makes, the whole car feels so much more alive and connected, much quicker steering and it feels like there's less body roll but that might be a bit of the placebo effect. A very good spend of the money on whatever car has suspension that can take advantage of it (y)

Hey Huw, The crossbar was actually repurposed from the previous mk3 MX-5 he fitted the rollbar to. He takes an old one out each time, then drills the holes correctly (I think), sprays it the same colour as the bar etc in preparation for the next rollbar installation. So you could definitely use your own one. Also, Phil has raced a serious level for decades and trains aspiring drivers here in the UK; he's got his very own belts for sale that work with this whole setup. They're not UK road legal but would be track complaint I believe. His email is in the description if you're interested 😊

Just come across the channel and subscribed. Interested to see what backbox you go for. Standard definitely doesn't provide a sense of theatre. I don't need more power, but I'd like the excitement of a decent sound when hooning on back roads! Problem is, I like tone over volume, and I haven't got silly money to spend which limits the options. JapSpeed is £200, but no reviews or sound clips, and the vids I've seen fitted to other makes/models sounds over loud, tinny, harsh. Essentially, just nasty. Cobalt which is favoured by many MX5 owners is discontinued...through Moss Europe...no longer available. IL Motorsports backbox has a lovely tone, but is over £600! So I'm staying sock for now, and enjoying the drive but not the soundtrack.

Not my own car but I shan't spoil too much! The other weird position I find myself in right now is having the MX-5 as my *only* car and now I'm doing 2 hour trips on the motorway quite regularly. I'm starting to appreciate the balance of refinement when you're not in the mood for a hoon haha! I'm going to buy a daily this summer though and after that, a backbox for my MX-5 toy will absolutely be on the cards! My gut, like yours, is that the best money spent on a backbox sits around £400 to £600 so that you don't end up hating it but so it adds enough drama at the correct revs.

The tension did work well enough when I did emergency stops, it really did hold me in place. The fact the lap belt is also clicked in quite tight would probably help too. Hey pal, Sorry for missing this comment, I put new seatbelt guides in which allow the belt to move more freely - they're not perfect yet sadly, perhaps another bit of silicone spray will help but they definitely move better than before. The guy who was working on seatbelt guides (not the type I ended up buying but I would assume an identical design really) is the same guy (Grant) who created the rollbar itself at GC Fabrications. Phil Brough is the fantastic guy who put it in for me, he sells his own harness which would be safer for track use but I'm unsure if it'd pass an MOT. Worth checking with him (email in the bio) if you're interested still. All in all, glad I did it despite the slightly annoying belts. @petrolpoodle6617

Hi Paul, Thanks so much for watching! That's a really interesting question you know! My first disclaimer is I'm learning about car safety at the same speed as everyone else, I'm not qualified in any way but purely on my logic I'll answer. Would I be right in saying then that your head doesn't go above the standard seats at all? I personally feel safer on every journey and love the look. It handles better but the seatbelts are slightly annoying (by the way, GC Fabrications are now working on a fix for the seatbelts! It seems they retract happily with a minor adjustment). I'm truly torn but if the seatbelts can retain their full safety I'd say it's an improvement over all and if £750ish makes no difference to your life, go for it! One last thing to consider is the little plastic wind deflector doesn't go all the way up (about 85 percent of the way up) so a little more wind comes into the cabin. At very high speeds the deflector slowly creeps back down. I think your chances are super super low and if you're well under the standard rollbar I'm sure you'd be okay, so if the rollbar seems like an inconvenience and expense you could do without, I wouldn't be scared into making the purchase. If it makes no difference to you then it's a happy extra insurance in my opinion. Speaking of which, perhaps call Adrian Flux and get yourself a quote on the modded version and see what that comes to. Thanks again for watching, Paul
@paulchappell
@paulchappell 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. Yes, my head is definitely lower than the rollbar, and likely lower than the top of the headrestraint. I have replaced the plastic wind-deflector with a clear, glass panel which is taller than the plastic panel, so that would need to change. I am unlikely to add the better rollbar. Thank you for a thought-provoking video.

You don't need a roll bar. I have been driving Miata's since 2003 as a daily driver only and I've never had a rollover, never had a roll bar. Had commutes on canyon highways with twisty roads to city freeways. I've slipped around on ice, and hydroplaned in heavy rain (aside from a truck backing into my car parked in a parking lot) I've never had an accident. The only thing in my opinion that is being overlooked is speed and staying on the road. Its very simple - you keep your speed down unlike that rollover in the video and you be mindful of your tires staying on the road so they don't clip an edge or cause you to loose traction on the shoulder. Unlike that roll over in the video obviously not managing speed on a wet road.

tl;dr rollbar without helmet is not safe for street use. "As an EMS volunteer who gets to see all too many MVAs, I can tell you that the forces on a body in a crash are unimaginable by somebody simply sitting in a seat and trying to guess where their head will impact a roll bar. Roll bars are not "perfectly safe" on the street. And the padding--even assuming you're using the real stuff and not "foam"--are intended to pad a helmet, not a skull. An even greater danger, in some situations, can be the cross bar that typically is at about shoulderblade height, behind the seat. If you get rear-ended hard and your seat breaks loose from its rails, you can easily break your back/neck against that bar. A PCA Club Racer was killed at Lime Rock that way several years ago, when he spun and hit a tire wall going backward fast. that's why many PCA regions mandate a seatback support plate fastened to the rollbar, which is what I have with a fully padded DAS rollbar."

Hi Evzen, This is extremely valuable to know as I'd never considered the idea of the seat coming loose. I kinda thought my body/seat wouldn't physically allow for my head to come into contact with the bar, but that's something I hadn't accounted for. I'm going to look to cover the bar in lots of soft padding, would you know where best to search or what materials I should look for? Thanks again! PS. I think I'll do an update video and pin a comment on this video with this advice!

Some good-ish news is that I've just tried sitting in the car in my usual driving position and I'd have to be extremely unlucky and have my body come upwards by a few inches and then backwards a few inches before there would be contact. The rollbar is quite high and far back in that respect. However, I am still looking into the padding now as I'd much rather it were softer for peace of mind and added 'just in case'. Thanks again!

You are right about the forces in a crash. I had a seatbelt on & had a crash in a mazda RX2 Capella & afterward you could see the bruise imprint of the rear view mirror in my left eye socket. the car was a write off.

Unless you plan on driving like an idiot on slippery wet roads, if you're only going to do one mod, the most essential ones for MX5s are: Mk1: Front strut brace to reduce the shakes. Mk2/2.5: Strap on the soft top so you can put the roof up and down without hurting your back. Mk3: 1.5" extension on clutch pedal. Mk4: Coilovers. The second most important one for all marks is forced induction.

Great shout on the mod list! I haven't actually heard anyone talk about the clutch pedal before, is that simply to shorten how far you need to depress the clutch for it to be fully depressed essentially? My biting point is right at the bottom of the pedal, just interested how it would be affected? And having had someone crash into me when it wasn't my fault and I was just going sensibly under 30mph, I've now felt the need for greater car safety. I'd look up rollover compilations, it's amazing how easy it is to roll a car without driving like a loon in the rain. Thanks for watching and thanks for the mod tips above 👍

@@petrolpoodle6617 Clutch pedal is further away than brake and accelerator so you need to sit at an angle. The extension solves that.

@@demon1954 That's very interesting! Do you think it's a stock revision from Mazda or your particular one has already had the clutch pedal adjusted?

I love my Mx-5 NC but it has so many potential water leak points. I don't understand why the engineering was this stupid.

Yeah it's a real shame isn't it, I feel like the MX-5s have been designed around Japan and they totally underestimate how wet/road salty the UK can be!

I suppose no one has ever been in a rollover that wasn't their fault? So as long as the driver knows how to drive, it's physically impossible to roll when someone else crashes into you

Hahaha it's definitely been a fight! With the seat reclined just the right amount on the new lower brackets and higher rollbar, it's doable now. But yeah, overall I could do with a slightly larger interior hahaha!

Regarding the MX5 roll over the driver was at fault 100% in conditions with a standing water slow down people do this all the time and there's a price to pay nothing wrong with the safety of the MX5 it's poor driving. you could have got hurt in any vehicle
@petrolpoodle6617
@petrolpoodle6617 Жыл бұрын
Definitely agree that the driver was at fault for hitting the standing water (and too quickly). But you can't say 'nothing wrong' with the safety when the rollbar sits below the average head. If you or a loved one smashed their head into the ground in a rollover you wouldn't be standing by that statement hahaha. The same aged Z4, Boxster, CLK and TT all have rollbars that are thicker and well above the head of even the tallest driver, that's more the point that it's a poor bit of safety design. It'd be like having passenger airbags that only deploy halfway and don't stop you smashing your face on the wheel haha. Other than the tiny rollbars it's got decent dual-stage airbags and decent structural safety, much better than older MX-5s

The Mazda designers did the loops because now you can’t see out your rear view mirror - which wouldn’t pass the equivalent version of a manufacturers IVA test. Sorry not for me, too ostentatious, and rear visibility; non existent.
@petrolpoodle6617
@petrolpoodle6617 Жыл бұрын
That's understandable about the rear visibility test and it not passing an IVA equivalent. However, rear visibility is certainly not non-existent - it's absolutely fine, it's better than my 2010 Honda Civic was! And it's better than a van which has none at all and plenty get by.
