George Harrison wrote some wonderful songs both with and without The Beatles. In 1976 Capitol Records took the unprecedented step of combining his solo tracks with Beatles tracks onto an album which they called "The Best Of George Harrison".
In this video, we take a look at all aspects of this album including the background to its release, its track listing, it differing UK and U.S. artwork and of course, its sound quality. We also look at the compilations which followed and find out if this other solo albums are worth investigating.

We need a George Harrison Anthology CD boxset similar along the lines to the 1998 John Lennon CD boxset. There’s definitely enough demo material and rarities for such a release.

I felt George was disrespected by EMI/Capitol issuing the Best of album by including Beatles tracks. The Let it Roll collection could easily been two LPs. I believe Dhani Harrison said they wanted it to me, but EMI balked at the idea. Another enjoyable episode, Andrew! - Roger

Very enjoyable Andrew! All of George’s albums are worth having and each have great songs. My idea of a compilation would include; My Sweet Lord, What is Life, All Things Must Pass, Give Me Love, Don’t Let Me Wait Too Long, Dark Horse, You, This Guitar (Can’t Keep From Crying), This Song, Crackerbox Palace, Beautiful Girl, Love Comes To Everyone, Faster, Blow Away, Your Love is Forever, Wake Up My Love, Dream Away, That’s the Way it Goes, All Those Years Ago, Tear Drops, Life Itself, Sat Singing, When We Was Fab, Devil’s Radio, This Is Love, Got My Mind Set on You, Poor Little Girl, Cockamamie Business, Cheer Down, Any Road, Looking For My Life, Stuck Inside a Cloud, The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and Brainwashed. Thanks for sharing Andrew!

I always found it interesting that on the inner sleeve, "For You Blue" (7:40) is listed as being "Released as a Beatles single" rather than being pulled from the "Let It Be" album. I assumed this was because in 1976 "Let It Be" was still on a United Artists/ABKCO-distributed Apple label in the US, and Capitol didn't want to acknowledge another company. I bought this album at Christmas 1976 along with "33 1/3" and grew to love them both. Thanks for another great video, Andrew!

Yeah, that was likely behind it (much like Capitol’s refusal to acknowledge Vee-Jay’s “Introducing…The Beatles” and United Artists’ “A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack”. It might be why “For You Blue” (which Capitol released as the B-side to their final Beatles single during their existence in “The Long and Winding Road”) was selected over the other - and more acclaimed - Harrison track on Let it Be in “I Me Mine”.

I have always loved the Beatles, but until recently was only interested in John's solo career. For some reason, at the beginning of the lockdown in 2020 I started listening to George Harrison's first solo album and I was blown away. And to be told All Things Must Pass was Something I needed to hear.

Thank you for covering this often overlooked George album, Andrew! I have the cd version of 'Best of Dark Horse 1976 - 1989' which I bought on release and really enjoyed playing it. A shame that it never entered the UK or US charts since I think it features a very good selection of George's post EMI tracks.

Glad you brought this up! This is a great song! I remember listening to it (first new George song in years) only a few weeks before George died. It was actually trademarked "RIP 2001"...a little hint, letting us all know that the end was coming. (It was released online, I believe, in October 2001.) And it truly is a great song...nice chiming Hammond B3, great sounding band...and George's voice, though weak, is full of his personality. Great lyrics too. People call BRAINWASHED George's last work, but it was really was HORSE TO THE WATER. (I think Sam Brown did the song at the Tribute Concert a year later.)

Thanks, Andrew ... another fun one! I was a very young child when my father purchased George's Wonderwall Music. I remember that album being played and it became part of my Beatles DNA. It's really a spectacular album, imho. George covers a lot of musical territory on the album. Way back in the days before Discogs, "Wonderwall Music" and Ravi Shankar's soundtrack "Chappaqua" were holy grail items that I hunted for a lot. I was so happy when I was finally able to find a really pristine pressing of Wonderwall and this was before the 1992 reissues. BTW, crank up "Ski-ing" really loud!! What a cool riff!

Great upload as always Andrew, I don't think George himself would have wanted any Beatles songs of his on a George Harrison best of album. There is plenty of great George songs to make an excellent album. His songs may not be as commercial as Pauls (whose are?) but all things must pass is one of the best Beatles solo albums in its own right and he did have 3 US number ones after the Beatles. I think he recorded enough great songs to make a 14 track top notch album. I would put on my sweet lord, isn't it a pity, what is life, if not for you, give me love, got my mind set on you, photograph, all those years ago, between the devil and the deep blue sea, blow away, you, i'd have you anytime, all things must pass and let it down. I wonder if George was embarrassed by what Capitol did. If they tried hard enough, they could have made a 12-14 song greatest hits record from his material up to that point by taking 2-3 songs from each album, plus singles and B-Sides like "Deep Blue" and "Miss O'Dell".

Hello Andrew - this is a great video, bringing to mind a most peculiar time in Beatles' history. I had always assumed that SHAVED FISH sold great. When it came out, it was well stocked and, as I remember all of my brother's Beatle buddies loved it too (as it was a solid work, removing John further away from his days as a "Topical" singer/songwriter). For George's compilation, most people thought that it was a dirty trick for Capitol / EMI to include the fab four tracks. You know; "doesn't the label think he has enough strong songs of his own?" That was the sentiment of it back then. One thing I've noticed with the American pressings is that special inner sleeve was a true rarity with pre-owned pressings that showed up in the record shops.

As a young fan in the early 80s, I loved the Best of GH as a “one stop shop” for George’s best known songs. I rarely listen to it these days. Like the German Odeon release, the Australian release switched While My Guitar and For You Blue, for which George Martin is also credited as producer. We also got the awful Capitol cover. The album was reissued here in 1982 on the Axis budget label, again reproducing the American cover art. Still waiting for a truly representative, satisfying and career spanning GH compilation.

Great video about George's up and down 1976 year! All three best of compilations: the '76 Capitol album, Best of Dark Horse, and Let It Roll are worth the money, and good compilations. Three songs that should have found their way onto one or more of them would be Beware of Darkness, Miss O'dell, and Dream Away (from Time Bandits). I think 33 and 1/3 was George's best solo album, because it still sounds fresh and light. It's ironic that a year after writing I Me Mine he put together a bloated boxed set that should have been condensed down to one album's worth (oh, and maybe acknowledge the Chiffon's He's So Fine song, so he could have saved himself the legal heartburn). I would have loved to see George do a whole album of Bob Dylan covers - another in long line of what ifs.

My favourite George Harrison album is his eponymous one released in 1979, the contents of which tend to be ignored when the powers that be come to compile compilation packages. I think George Harrison's legacy would be served nicely by a more extensive retrospective, along the lines of the Wingspan one released many years ago, where each of his albums is represented, although perhaps that is an archaic idea today.

Many thanks for this video, and yes the cover of Capitol's pressing of the best of is truly hideous. If I were to compile my own best of George Harrison, it would comprise only his solo work. Stuff like Beware of Darkness, give me love give me peace on earth.. in fact it would probably be a variation of let it roll, but of my personal favourite George tracks. For me, my favourite album will always be All Things Must Pass, in fact it is to my mind the greatest album of all time, if I had to pick one from the amazing number I have listened to over the years that I have been a huge music fan. The Beatles are as far as I can see are the only band to have Three major songwriters who's output for the band was successful. I'd love to know of any others. George Harrison was a fantastic songwriter, with a wonderful gift for melody, and he rightly deserves the very best in whatever is released in his name.

Andrew, this is Gold! Thank you for being a fan ;) I'd never seen the UK innersleeve of GH GH, or noticed that it has rounded corners. That said, I don't enjoy the '76 or '09 compilations. "Best of Dark Horse" is near-perfect, however. (I would add "I Don't Want to Do It" and replace "Gone Troppo" with "Mystical One"). Just after "Wingspan" was released, I made solo mix CDs for a few friends covering George, John and Ringo's work. For George, I lifted all of "Best of DH," adding the cuts I listed above, and then side 2 from the '76 GH GH... then I added "Miss O'Dell, "I Don't Care Anymore," "Deep Blue," "Isn't it a Pity," "Don't Let Me Wait Too Long," "This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying," “Pure Smokey,” “Faster” “Here Comes the Moon” and "Art of Dying" (the slower version, from a boot!). Today, I'd probably add "Far East Man" and the booted "When Every Song Is Sung." It all fit perfectly on two CD-Rs if memory serves! I'm sure you've seen George's appearance on "Saturday Night Live" around this time; that was a nice promotional push for "33 1/3." I always felt the LP would have made the top 10 if not for "Greatest Hits." Sad. As for John and Ringo... it's not ideal, but EMI COULD have fit up to 18 tracks on a single LP at that time... "Blast" might have been perfect if it rounded up all of Ringo's other non-LP cuts (the wonderful "Coochy Coochy," plus "Down & Out" and "Blindman"). I also feel that the title tracks are the weakest cuts of "Sentimental" and "Beaucoups"... "Blue Turning Grey Over You," "$15 Draw" and "Wine, Women and Loud Happy Songs" would have been better choices. Or even Ringo's last Apple US chart single ("Goodnight Vienna"). And I have a soft spot for "Snookeroo" (#51 UK, but charted as #3 in the US alongside "No No Song" during a time of great confusion and reworking of the Billboard charts). For "Shaved Fish," it could have been perfect if they'd included "Move Over Ms. L" (thus compiling all of John's non-LP tracks), plus "Scumbag" and "New York City" (the two best cuts on "Sometime" IMO), plus "Intuition." I wouldn't hate "What You Got," "Meat City" or "Scared," either. (I, personally, would have left off "Mother," hoping buyers would buy and experience the POB LP in-full). Can you imagine the hype sticker that EMI could have included? "With guests Elton John, Eric Clapton, Frank Zappa, Billy Preston and Ringo Starr." WOW. (For anyone wondering, my CD compilation of John’s work took all of these cuts, all of the POB and Imagine LPs, John’s cuts from “Double Fantasy,” the cuts from “Rock and Roll Circus,” plus “Dizzy Miss Lizzie” from “Live Peace,” and “Nobody Told Me,” “I’m Steppin’ Out” and “Rock ‘n Roll People”) P.S. wonderful dissolve at 13:37 in the video!

All Things Must Pass is my favorite ex-Beatle album. My Sweet Lord would be played first anytime I added new gear on my stereo system. To me, all mastering done with this album at anytime is pretty much substandard. It needs a genuine good mastering and cutting. The last one by Danny(?) was just awful. One more thing, George's slide guitar style was absolutely amazing. One of the best slide guitarist's of all time.

Great to see this album reviewed! My first copy was the mfp version (from good old Woolworths) until I got a really nice original 1976 copy. It’s disappointing emi didn’t use solo recordings on side 1,but nevertheless still worth owning.

Nice video! The blue best of dark horse album has been a go to album for me since I bought the cassette on its release. Got the CD now and it's also ripped to my Sonos library - I can't explain it, but to my ears the audio quality has always been one of the best of any albums I own by any artist. I play it regularly, often on the basis of sound quality alone. The cassette even looks and feels like a much higher quality product than my others from that era. IIRC George's self-titled album (also the cassette) feels similarly of particularly excellent quality - I've never heard any discussion about this, but I'm sure it isn't just me!

Another excellent video on an excellent subject, Andrew. Superb! What I would like to see is a proper set of purely solo "Best Of" George tracks, in other words, Beatles group recordings, not included. I think a set using the concept Paul used for "Wingspan" would be a winner. CD 1: "Hits/Singles", and CD 2: "History - Key LP Tracks"*. (Here, I would be okay with any George Beatles' songs performed live.)

Hello, I'm from Argentina, I always imagined what the next Beatles album would have been like if they hadn't broken up. I imagine it would have been a double album, the black album, taking songs from Paul's first 2 albums, John's first 2, George's solo debut and some of Ringo's from his debut covers album. It would be great to see a video with this idea, your channel is very good. greetings

Andrew, your delivery and commentary is so informative and enjoyable. The back story you always provide is so valuable to the context of what you present. I did not purchase this compilation as I had all the songs from this I wanted already. Generally, good pick of songs, but I would have chosen "I Me Mine", instead of "For you Blue" from Let It Be. The former is a much better song in my opinion. It's a shame the Indian influenced songs were not considered. Love you to or Within you, Without you would have been respectable choices. As to your question. I would call this compilation a good introduction to Harrison's work. However, the triple album "All Things Must Pass" is a masterpiece and a must have for any fan, and I would add, the only solo Beatles work to reach #1. A few misses, but a great work overall. One of my favorites is the not so thinly veiled swipe at Paul in the song "Run of the Mill"

Another great one Andrew. This album was always kind of special for me because it was the first album I had with any Beatles studio content on it. My first ever Beatles album was Live at the Hollywood Bowl and the Best of George was the first thing I bought after. I agree with you about the hideous cover, although I was only eleven when I bought it and really didn't have much a critical eye yet. I just loved anything Beatles.

Andrew, I always look forward to the start of each week to catch your latest video offering and this one didn't disappoint as I took me right back to 1976 when I was 15 and seriously getting into all things Beatle. I definitely bought Rock 'n' Roll Music, The Best Of George Harrison, Shaved Fish, 33 1/3 etc at the time which I still have in my collection. In later years I also grabbed The Best Of Dark Horse and the Let It Roll albums as well. The Australian version of TBOGH unfortunately has the hideous American cover and to add insult to injury doesn't even have an inner sleeve! It does though have YEX961 & YEX962 in the dead wax so at least it's a UK master. Let It Roll comes pretty close as the perfect George compilation in my book.

I remember buying a load of second hand cassettes from a small downtown shop in Sydney, during my first trip to Australia in 1988. I had just bought a brand new Auto reverse Sony Walkman in Singapore (24hr stopover) so I needed tapes urgently. Among those cassettes I bought Best of George Harrison (US cover on a budget Axis label) Beatles Rarities (US version but on Parlophone EMI Australia) and Pink Floyd Relics (also on budget Axis) and Dark Side Of The Moon (EMI Australia) I played those tapes non stop and loved them to bits and I loved the track order of Best of George Harrison. For me like most of my LPs and cassettes…. It is about those memories of where I was and what I was doing when bought them and how I felt when I first played them. Regrettably, I gave all my cassettes to Oxfam in the late 90s. I wished though I kept all those tapes I bought in Singapore and Sydney because they were for me very special. Also it was during my first visit to Sydney that it was announced on a local radio station that The Beebs Lost Beatles Tapes Series was soon be broadcasted. It was a very exciting time indeed.

I bought the American version of "The Best of George Harrison" in the US when it was released, like I did with every Beatle and solo Beatle album. I was slightly bummed that half of the songs were Beatles songs. However, I suppose it was also a good reminder to the latest generation that not only was he a Beatle, but he wrote some great songs with that band. Still, they failed to include any evidence of his Indian musical styles as in "Within You, Without You," etc. Either way, instead of using Beatles songs, they should have dug deeper into his album tracks for the "best of" compilation, as there were a lot of great songs on there. As always my friend, another fantastic upload!

Very nice! Those greatest hits packages were great! I had the first one on Lp and loved it, then I saw the MFP version and was knocked out by the sonics. I really had hoped they did put some, or one, of the sitar pieces on there. After all, George made sitar crossover to all kinds of music. Excellent show!

Great video Andrew. I bought the American version of the best of George Harrison because I was told by the shopkeeper that it was out of print with that cover of George with the sad face. And the exact reason that I bought it is because it had Bangladesh on it. But I found your video regarding the best of George very interesting and informative. Thank you again. I wonder how the Harrison estate would reorganize an apple best of from his solo years of that era 1970 to 1975 only.

"The Best Of George Harrison" was my introduction to the solo Harrison back in the very early 90s, and I think I still remember the moment the needle dropped and I heard the first bars of "My Sweet Lord" for the first time! I was absolutely mesmerized. When I first heard "Bangla Desh", I thought "Wow, what is that?" and many other positive reactions to most tracks on Side B'. "Dark Horse" (the song) definitely puzzled me and it took me years to realise what a great tune it is. To this day, this album is one of the most important in my life and I have various copies from Greece, Italy, France, Japan, the U.S.A. and of course the budget one and the CD. The day of my purchase, that record shop had this and "Give My Regards to Broad Street" on display and I was amazed that both albums had Beatles tracks in them. I even remember the price I paid for it, 800 drachmas, which was quite cheap for a vinyl LP at the time. I'm glad I chose "The Best Of George Harrison" over "Broad Street". It definitely made me a big fan of George!! On another note, "Best Of Dark Horse 1976-1989" did appear on the Billboard chart. It made #132 on the Top LPs and Tape listing during a 6-week chart tenure! It definitely deserved a much better fate, but George isn't really famous for the promotion of his own records! He'd rather promote other people's records (like Ravi's or Splinter's) and leave his own to do their own thing, unhelped.

Great video. I actually just got the album on cd. It was inexpensive and it was one I’ve never owned. You can’t argue with the quality of the songs but it definitely was a slap in George’s face to suggest he couldn’t have a full solo greatest hits. The best of Dark Horse is a great album and is a must own for those two songs plus Cheer Down if you don’t want to buy the Lethal Weapon soundtrack. Let It Roll is too ATMP heavy. Obviously any George greatest hits today needs to encompass his whole catalogue. But I think all his albums are great. I even really like Extra Texture. Not to mention Wonderwall. All have great deep cuts that would probably not make a best of so go for the whole catalogue!

I always go for All Things Must Pass, the other albums on Apple, Cloud Nine or Brainwashed when it comes to getting in touch with George Harrison’s finest works for me. Never owned one of his Best Of albums for having all of his solo albums in my collection. So the Best Of albums can’t give me enough of extra songs I didn’t have before. But what a great composer and interpreter of his own material George is. I really admire his body of work!

Here is my idea of a George Harrison compilation album. I would put I’d have you anytime my sweet lord, it’s not a pity what is life let it down Woman don’t you cry for me dear one tears of the world which is one of the best songs that George Harrison ever recorded Poor little girl tear down got my mind set on you when we was fab Marwa blues brainwashed Annie Road the devil in the deep blue sea which shows his wonderful ukulele skills. give me love give me peace on Earth blow away teardrops and cockamamie business as far as bonus tracks go I would definitely put in mystical one and runs so far which he gave I think Eric Clapton up to Lapointe and his vocals on that one is great.

Off at a tangent I agree about the quality of sound a mfp record. I have my dad's 1970 Shadows album and Relics by Pink Floyd on the original starline label and the reissue mfp plus 60s compilations. The sound is really warm with plenty of bass. Relics on mfp is so superior, the first track Arnold Layne and the intro is so deep in bass, Waters's Rickenbacker sounds beautiful. Gonna have to find the beatles's rock and roll 1 and 2 on mfp. Great video as always.

Since he was only allowed a few songs per disc, George's Beatles catalog is already sort of a Greatest Hits compilation. The ones that are in my opinion the most criminally under-rated are Long Long Long, Savoy Truffle, Blue Jay Way, Only a Northern Song, It's All Too Much and Think for Yourself. Blue Jay Way's melody and harmony are so amazing - the only completely satisfying example of the Lydian mode I can think of. And the middle 8 of Only a Northern Song - oh my God. And Long Long Long? Each of those is just *shockingly* brilliant in its own way, as are the ones from All Things Must Pass that the Beatles passed on. And the song Bangla Desh!! Another overlooked gem from his Beatles period is Don't Bother Me. He hadn't reached full maturity, but it has some rhythmic and thematic ideas that were way ahead of their time. *QUESTION: If you were compiling a boxset of every Harrison-penned, official Beatles song, but had to leave out just one single song ... which would you leave out?* For me I think it would be You Like Me Too Much. I don't hate it, and the middle 8 is very cool, but it's my least favorite.
