Helsinki Central Library Oodi or just Oodi was founded in 2018. This architecture building of flawless lines and and futuristic design has become one of the symbols of Helsinki. It is much more than just a library, it’s also a cummunity centre and place for locals and visitors to feel good and enjoy themselves.
Besides reading books, you can play video games, record music, use different production machines and even cook yourself a meal in fully equiped kitchen.
Join me on a tour in arguably the best library in the world!

Do the studios in the library cost extra to use e.g borrowing a guitar? Also can you hear any sound outside of them? Thanks for video!

Hey! It’s free of charge. All you need is book it in advance. I have never tried it, but pretty sure knowing how well the finns are building you will not hear a thing outside. Thank you :)

How does this compare against the LV National Library in Riga? This library in Helsinki looks totally awesome and makes visiting Helsinki in winter also interesting. There is certainly nothing like this in the States!

Great question! 😊 My vote goes to Oodi for sure, because it is made for people and locals really go there and hang out. It is a place where you feel good and welcomed. Gaismas pils (Castle of light) on the other hand is more like a showroom. You have to register to get in, can’t touch anything, many restricted areas. It is also beautiful though 😊

@@theruudy I did not know that! That's probably why my LV friends show me the building from the outside. I must see the library in Helsinki. Truly amazing!

I liked the tour and subscribed to the channel because I want to learn more about Finland now that it is joining NATO. However, I am somewhat confused by the library itself, or why you describe it as the world’s greatest. Unless I missed something, the actual books seem like barely an afterthought. Here in America we have libraries with, literally, millions of books, so I was expecting pretty much stack after endless stack-but no, not that I could see. Is the nearly bookless “library” becoming a trend? Seems like it would be better to call it a place to hang out with a few books thrown in for decoration. Am I just not getting the big picture here or what?

Firstly, thank you for subscribing and thank you for the questions! I would say, that Oodi is something like ''showroom library'', where it really is more like a community centre. Place where everyone feels welcomed and nice, in meantime breaking stereotypes of old, boring libraries where you would get your book and leave right after. In Helsinki and all around Finland there are countless of ''old style'' libraries with millions of books and endless shelves. In Helsinki alone there are almost 40 libraries, plus they are all connected digitaly. Which means, that any book from other libraries can be delivered to your specific one. I call it greatest (subjectively, of course) because in no other I had seen such an advancement in techonology and services topped with welcoming atmosphere where people are encouraged to spend time and educated themselves. Finland is amazing country. If you are interested in topic I have other videos about Finland and others more to come! :)

In Finland nowadays it is common for books to be pre-ordered online and then picked up from the nearest library, which is why the libraries look empty of books, more like living rooms with computers, hobby rooms and so. My local library has kind of book promotions where they show newly published ones or related to some current theme. Otherwise the books that are present are for kids mostly
