Since it has a remote temperature input, you could attach an ESP module to it that feeds it one of your zone temperature. As a bonus, you would get your “Frankenstein” thermostat back.
@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech 2 жыл бұрын
Well technically all you need is a temp probe and you have 2 zones. I was hoping for 6 rooms. But i was being fancy. As I'm not going to use the built in periods I'll try to use that to feed the info and display it as zones anyway
@wstrater

@@notenoughtech I said “one of your zones” when I meant “anyone of your zones”. You could have it control your office while working, your living room in the evening and your bedroom at night.

Great video Thank you, My question is can the TRVs request heat from the thermostat like the more expensive systems like TADO and Evohome ? Or are they more passive ?

Hi great vid! I have a question. How does your boiler know when to start generating heat? Does nodered notify the relay from your boiler?

Does this thermostat control the radiator valves you had in the video? cause those valves have their own temp. sensor, will this thermostat over run the temp. shown by the radiator valves? i have couple of those radiator valves and have connected to my Tuya hub and phone, but since the sensor is within the valve itself, i feel that it doesn't give an accurate reading of the room temp. since its close to the heat source. i was wondering if i should get i temp reader for each room and place it away from the radiator so it cant control the valve with actual room temp.
@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech Жыл бұрын
The link isn't actually direct, so it's down to app to read the temps and execute policies so you could ignore the internal temperature of TRV. Witht hat said i'm working on something that will let you select the temperature form either of devices for your heating

Very useful video, can anyone tell me, what else is needed to support ZigBee trv so it can call the boiler on or off when one of the radiator is on or off? Many thanks

You will need a coordinator and a server. To begin with something like cc2531 or sonoff dongle works just great. Raspberry pi is also great board to host your server but these can get harder to get. Any Linux SBC would probably do the job

I am still looking for a Zigbee thermostat that can work for multiple rooms or trv valves, preferably Tuya compatible. Anyone know one?
@petergrm8420

Apart from having a screen displaying temperatures, are there any actual benefits to a thermostat compared to just a relay controlled by node red? It seems to me you could schedule heating and control temperatures on a room by room basis using TRVs and zigbee temp sensors which will always be more accurate. And as a control interface a tablet will always be better. So where does a thermostat come in if you have a connected smart home set up?

Fot my personal reasons a couple. 1. Backup in case things go bad or someone wants to control the hating manually (guests etc) thermostat like this will update my system. 2. Backup in case things go bust. 3. Its a great location for a router position for my mesh. 4. Trust me it will all make sense soon :) my heating will be awesome. May not be ready to kick in properly this season but I'm very close to what I need it to look like.

@@notenoughtech That's a very good point. Even if all the other tech in your house dies at once the thermostat will keep going without a single care in the world 😀. From a reliability standpoint you'd want the device wired to the furnace to be capable of controlling it by itself.

@@notenoughtech looking forward to seeing the end result. I have the Tuya Zigbee TRVs and looking for a solution to turn on the boiler when a TRV asks for it. I could do it using a smart relay and NodeRED but I’d prefer not to for the same redundancy/backup/wife reasons you mentioned. Curious to see how you’re planning to solve this!

It's defo the video I've been waiting for. I have the TGR85-ZB-WPB. Tried connecting, I have just two wires going to my existing Danfoss 5000. I get the uni powered and paired no problem, but it won't switch the heating on/off. Have tried linking the dry contact to L connector, but still no joy. Any suggestions?

If you only have 2 wires and the thermostat is fully analogue, then you need a dry contact version with a spare power source

Also been chatting with another YT channel. I'm sure that somehow they have either used a brown and blue wire for live and switched. Or the connection comes from where the two port valve is. I think I need to surrender to an electrician 😫. (2017 Barratt's Home) mixed wiring systems across the house, amongst others bodges

If you take your original Thermostat off set it to low then probe with multimeter to see what contacts close. Then repeat the same for setting for high temperature

I use 'dumb' Zigbee thermometers and my phone to set the room temperatures. It's actually more convenient and flexible than a room thermostat.

I am personally offended on behalf of your DIY thermostat, it is not an abomination, it is great design :) Seriously though, I have a combination of Nest and DIY thermostats at home - the DIY ones are more predictable, less flaky - they don't suffer from annoying issues like Nest cloud availability or - more often - disconnecting from the Heatlink etc. I am sick of cloud products! Never buying one again - only making my own! It's ridiculous that there is no pairing button! How can the designer get away with that!
@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech 2 жыл бұрын
I don't hate the pairing, but they SHOULD include that in the manual right? :D It's funny how simple things break less often... I do need to change it though, my partner is terrified of touching this thing and that's fair enough even if 99% of the time Alexa takes care of the heating

Quick question, might be a silly one, but is there a way to set up TVR to call for heat on this? If the room temp is low, TVR valve opens up but if the thermostat is not heating then it's pointless.
@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech Жыл бұрын
In general, TRVs work independently from the thermostat and actuation won't influence much on inactive heating. You could experiment with automation panel in Tuya to create a more advanced behaviours
@alinemiliansas

@@notenoughtech I thought so... Cheers. Unfortunately in Smart Life Automation, the only variables available for the thermostat are Power On/Off, Mode Program/Manual and Lock On/Off, which is rather disappointing as I have a room with Moes TRV always significantly colder than the reading of the thermostat (which is in a warmer place). I need to think of workarounds. :)
