My sentiments as well. The kit lenses are so much better than I had hoped for. But, I still hope that Nikon will add a few additional Z Mount DX lenses with IS to the line up that are more weather resistant. That seems to be the weak link to me.

I agree. The APS Z system has so much potential. I would like to see a really good 10-20, 16-70, and 70-200, all f4 in the small format, with image stabilization. But not holding my breath.

If you just look at the price alone, what you get with the Z6ii is amazing. The IBIS, the new mount (Sony refuses to change the mount, despite that their FF IBIS barely works because of it), amazing shadow recovery, great lenses, the best raw files, the AF is snappy and the EVF / LCD(the new Sony a1 has a worse LCD screen in size and resolution) are great. The only other mirrorless camera in the price range of the Z6ii is the A7iii, and the Z6ii blows that out of the water. It out performs the r6, which costs $500USD more and the Z6ii comes with the FTZ adapter for that $2000USD price. It's an amazing camera, but on KZfaq it seems like the only thing that matters with cameras is the eye AF overlay.

@@senthilbp And I get it, eye AF is amazing, but if you look at hit rates with eye AF, Nikon is up there with Sony and Canon, it's just the overlay doesn't look at smooth. Sony is definitely the king and that's cool with me, but there are so many other things that make a camera great that the Sony lacks on but reviewers just don't care about that.

I love your channel Leigh! I own a Z7 II and a Z7. I also own a number of Z-mount lenses including the trinity of f/2.8 zoom lenses, the 35mm and 85mm f/1.8 lenses, and the new amazing 50mm f/1.2S. The only remaining F-mount lens that I still own is the 200-500mm f/5.6. The images that I’m getting from these cameras are amazing. The Z-Mount lenses are just phenomenal. I’ve been a photographer and Nikon user for more years than I care to admit. Let’s just say my first “professional” camera was the Nikon F2, and these Z-mount lenses are the best I’ve ever used.

Switched from Sony RIV to Z6ii/Z7ii. I can not say once that I’ve said man I miss the Sony AF. The difference is overblown by reviewers and doesn’t translate to real world. Handling a Sony feels like handling high tech but not a camera. And like you said the experience can make or break. And Z glass is untouched. IQ tests confirm this not really an opinion. Everyone laughed at the z mount size marketing but it seems to be proving itself.

The Nikon NASA F4 Electronic Still Camera was one of the first and rarest fully digital cameras with development started in 1987.[1] While Nikon delivered a modified Nikon F4 body, most of the electronics for the digital camera and housings were designed and built by NASA at the Johnson Space Center and other suppliers. It was first flown in September 1991 on board the Space Shuttle Discovery, mission STS-48.[

I got the Z6 gen 1 recently after selling my old D600. I didn't think I'd be getting along with mirrorless so easily. This has been a refreshing experience for me. I am actually more keen on doing weekend photography again instead of just paid shoots only. There is a certain inspiration I haven't felt for years. Z series is just so practical and though there are things like less shots per battery charge and getting used to some of the new controls locations on the back of the camera... it's all just buttery smooth Nikon experience with noticeably improved image quality.

I own the Z6II with the new battery grip and it is definitely an improvement from the Z6. Excellent video on the Z6 II, Leigh! As a landscape and product photographer, I've used "manual" focus stacking with great success with my small product photography. However, using the Nikon Z7's in-camera "Focus Shift Shooting" mode, (with camera on a solid tripod, using AF, of course, manual exposure and in AF-S mode, and the ultra-sharp Nikkor S 50 f/1.8 at f/8), when I set the first exposure's focus point on the nearest point of the subject (or bottom, if a vertical subject like a beer bottle) and set it for 25 or 35 shots, with a Focus Step Width of 5, Interval until next shot of 3, First frame exposure lock ON, Peaking Stack image OFF, Silent Photography ON (unless using flash), and Start. I find that the focus point did not travel "up" or through the subject as expected, thus invariably resulting in areas of unsharpness! Not sure what I'm missing here, but I would think that in a controlled studio environment, this function should work as well as my manual focus stacking does! Thanks, and be safe!

First my partner got the Z50 and now I managed to get a great offer on a z7 ... I was apperhensive at first going from D810 ... and it took me a while to get used to autofocus ... but now once I know how to set it up properly and use it, it's awesome! I get ultra sharp focus using Sigma 150-600 with a x2 Sigma TC and this is at f13 0_o something that no DSLR would ever manage. Also the auto-area mode for birds in flight is awesome, FPS is decent and enough for my needs and in general I can take amazing pictures and for the first time I don't feel that the camera is limitting my options in any way ... that's probably also due to awesome ergonomics! The 2 front programmable buttons are awesome and I can change everything I need on the fly. I usually go from single point to auto area focus modes a lot, and it just a button press and 1 click on the front wheel. I don't even have to take my eye away from the viewfinder. And also you get full on 20MP crop sensor for increasing that zoom even more if you want to frame that way ... and IBIS which works great! I can go ridiculously slow on the shutter and still get sharp shots ... anyway. TL;DR I've read a lot of negative reviews on Nikon Z, but after my partner tried the Z50 I decided to try the Z7 and it's awesome 0_o

I love my Z6-II. I picked it over the Z7-II because the Z6-II is better with video than the 7. So far, it is a great addition to my Nikon gear. With all of its technology, it cannot beat (yet) the D500 for high-speed photography. I sold most of my lenses and kept a few to work with the PTZ adapter, which is flawless with the Z6-II. Thank you for the extra info about the video side of the camera. I never wanted to shoot video with my still cameras, but I guess it is so advanced now, that I might go with the flow and start shooting some short video clips between still shots. Haha indeed, 2 is always better than 1. But based on my usage as a hobby shooter since 2008 with Nikon D80, then D7100, a6000, and now turn to the Fuji xt30, then xt5 + Lumix S5II. Along with varieties of SD cards (SanDisk, Sony, Kingston, Lexar), in conditions like rain, snow, tropic, and desert heat (I did a lot of travel and hiking/camping trip). No single card lost my footage during these 15 years of shooting.😂 Or call me a lucky shooter. I upload my photos to my Mac or iPad every day when I'm finished shooting and returning home/hotel, so there is plenty of wear and tear with my SD cards. After these years, no issues there with read and write speed, no lost data, and my Mac/iPad reads my card perfectly. But yeah, if you have, $$ and an extra is a good idea anyways.

At 09:48. "They seem to do everything quite well". I think 40 years ago that was Nikon's unofficial design philosophy. They didn't innovate, but every feature and function included in a design was rock solid in build and performance. Would like to see them return to that. There are bells and whistles, and then there are reliable and dependable tools.

I just made the jump 2 months ago and opted for a Z6 and Z7 with FTZ for my F glass and a couple 24-70 f/4 S lenses for video. I shoot architecture, product and corporate photography and video. The value on 2nd hand, 1st generation Z market was so attractive, I just couldn't help myself. Wow is the only word I can say. I no longer have a need for my Sony A6000, 6500 and A7sii, because the dynamic range and video features are equally good if not better and I prefer the Nikon color when grading footage. If your on the fence about the Z line, step into the 1st generation Zs. Don't believe all the negative hype about these cameras, they are fantastic. The Z mount is truly a revolutionary step forward ahead of all the competitors on the market. I would not be surprised to see Nikon come out with a MF (fuji Type sensor), which may potentially fit in the current Z mount frame- That would be something neither Canon or Sony could replicate with their current lens mount

No, now we will have two great cameras to use for whatever it is we are doing (he needs a decent video camera for work/job sites). I am an enthusiast that has been published in the past and because I love horses, wildlife and nature in general, I am always finding limitations in my knowledge and my equipment. I can be shooting action in an indoor arena with horses moving quickly (my nightmare for photography) or little birds flitting around or a sunrise over the lake. My background is that I'm an artist and have studied design, colour and composition, so I have that going for me. Now I have a lump sum check that will cover the cost of this camera plus two great lenses (28mm-70mm nikkor and the 150mm - 600mm contemporary sigma) which will go nicely with my current 70mm-300mm nikkor I've had since 2009. I think I'm good for lenses ... 😉 (I still don't have any fast glass...but will start saving my pennies for sure). I have been a Nikon shooter since 2005 when I was introduced to them. I had to learn how to use the camera back then for my work and loved it so much I bought the same camera (Nikon D80). Before that was Fuji and before that was Pentax (35mm). I just found your channel and look forward to watching more of your content. Can't wait to use this camera! Cheers! 🙂

Well, I would say if you are doing wildlife or sports, you may still want to stick to your DSLRs. Specifically ones like the D850, D500, D5, etc. But for everything else I think the Z cameras are perfect. Great travel cameras because the bodies are lighter and smaller. I do think that the picture quality is much better on the Z compared to my DSLR bodies, plus I really like IBIS (don't think I could go back seeing that about half of my shooting is done in low light and in more canses than not, handheld, so IBIS comes in handy for me). The noise performance is also quite good, although I still prefer my D750's high ISO noise performance over the Z6. Noise, IMO starts to appear in Z6 files around 1600 whereas with my D750 I could push it up to 3200 without any problems. But for an all around camera that can do "most" stuff, the Z is a good choice. Nikon did a lot of things right from the start. Unfortunately, fast AF isn't necessarily one of those things, but hopefully with the release of the Z II's and the dual processor design, they can bring faster AF (for wildlife and sports) to the Z II bodies and maybe at least make them useable for most fast action shooting. Right now, the lack of certain AF features do hurt the Z system, and I think if Nikon can find a way to implement them like they do on their DSLRs (like Group AF and 3D AF) then that will make the Z even more attractive. Hopefully in the next firmware update, they'll bring more improvements/speed to the AF system, because I can't find much else that really needs improving honestly, aside from that).

Great, down to earth commentary. I've been mostly using my Olympus lately, and before that, my Fuji X system. My Nikon is largely collecting dust. But just yesterday because I had to shoot a client that could potentially use their images for up to billboard size, I hauled out my trusty D850. Still a fantastic camera, but I'm starting to really appreciate the lighter weight, IBIS, and deeper tech integration that the mirrorless cameras offer. Much as I loved them, I don't think I will continue with the Fuji any more unless they can really eke out more from their X-sensor. So, this has me wondering if I should more heavily into the Nikon Z series, and particularly if the Z7ii is worth the extra money over the Z6ii.

Thanks for the overview/review! I've been looking for a replacement for both M8 and D3 in one camera and, since the z7ii would be overkill in my twilight years, settled on the Z6ii. Should be here by the end of the month. Coming from the D3 with its dual CF card slots, I was surprised by the mixed cards here. Maybe a matter of space. I much prefer a smaller camera after the D3! I also ordered a Z-to-M adapter so I can see if my M lenses work well on the Z6ii.

Great review, thanks! Having sold all my Nikon dslr kit while it had value I've been waiting out the MILC wars and the Z6ii is very compelling... My plan was to get an A7RIII and the Tammy 28-200 until the A7IV dropped, but now I'm reconsidering... purely for the colors of Nikon. Out of Canon, Fuji, Sony, etc. Nikon's color science still nails 95% of what I try to get out of post. Combined with the exceptional price-2-performance of the 24-70 F4... very compelling. With 6 children, low light and af are huge considerations but it seems the last firmware update resolved quite a bit of that... not at R6 specs yet but. Thanks again, excellent (and useful) content. Watching dozens of long reviews on the new Nikons Z6II and also being an owner of a D3300 Nikon DSLR, the general consensus is that Nikon has the richest colors, and most beautiful still photos of any camera, while the main complaint is that the auto focus isn't good for full time video production of fast moving objects, compared to the Canon and Sony offerings. But the Nikon is also priced very good. As well, Nikon is very proactive about free firmware upgrades, that allow their cameras to continue to be upgraded for free, without adding new lenses or hardware. The future firmware upgrades might solve some of the current limitations.

There is one important downside to be mentioned, in the highest burst rate mode the EVF will show a slide show which effectively blocks sight to the subject thus heavily limiting the usability of the high burst rate to very few use cases, limiting the focus to a single point also further limits usability. I still do not understand why Nikon did that and hope they correct this with a future firmware update. I think it is really important to call out camera manufacturers and other tech companies on the technical mistakes they make so they see reasons to fix them. Unfortunately many people have been indoctrinated by Google and Apple to just live with bugs and wrong concepts on devices and software. Some even go as far as to see such criticism as hateful comments, but they are not. People often talk about how Sony and Canon are better with AI controlled AF and tracking but those are not and should not be the highest priority. Because you still need to be able to see your subject and follow it with your camera for the camera to be able to track it in the first place.

As a full time pro that owns several photo companies, my take on this camera is maybe a 7 out of 10. It's OK, but it has some flaws. We own several different cameras here (D5/D6/ D850/ Z7 and the Z6II). The camera has a sort of "ho-hum" feel to it. Nobody gets excited shooting with it, like they do with the D6 and D850. When I ask my photographers about the camera their response is..."it's OK". It does not do anything superbly....but it falls down nowhere either. Low light performance is average. Focus is fast but not up to the Z9 or D6. Images are nice, but not stellar. We use it for real estate as it's light and easy to carry around....as well as moderate pixel count so files are smaller. Also it performs well with the stellar 14-24f2.8S lens !! Now that is a keeper for sure. Nice camera for applications demanding mobility and moderate file sizes.

I have the Z6ii as well, but for me personally it's not the best Z camera. That's the Z7ii. I shoot portraits, but sometimes you have a shot that looks fire cropped down. The 45mp would be a lot more useful. I don't shoot sports so I won't fill op a ton of memory cards when shooting. Waiting for the new Z8 camera to drop before deciding to get the Z7ii or Z8 depending on price and specs. The Z6ii is great for low light and weddings etc though.

It will be interesting to see if they improved the low light AF as well, but I guess we will have to wait for a test on that. Anyone know if they fixed the Shutter shock issue or are you still stuck using EFCS to counter that at slow shutter speeds?

Thank you for a great review. I am considering the Z6II (or perhaps Z7II), moving up from an early Olympus OM-D micro 4/3's system. I like the compactness of it for travel (vs a DSLR) but the camera looks kind of "plastic-y" in all the videos. Does it feel like a solid camera ? I don't want to spend 2-3K on a camera body that doesn't feel like professional tool. The Olympus was very good in this respect (for the money) but I would like to move back to a Nikon system even though I am going to have to buy new lenses. Neither, for stills in the 24mp range, get the Z6. The Z5 is using the same sensor at the D750, whereas the Z6 is using a BSI Sensor. Pick up a Z6 now while others are trading up the 6ii. The image quality is no different and the price on the 2nd hand market 6s right now is ridiculously great.

No, simple restructuring. Most of the current Nikon bodies and lenses are made in Thailand and have been for many years. The original Z6 and Z7 were outliers in that they were made in Japan. Nikon is concentrating on mirrorless now so doesn't need all the Japan facilities making the legacy DSLR products (talking old 50mm 1.2 lenses etc).
