Oil is the lifeblood of a car, but can you actually do damage with the wrong amount of oil? Of course you can do damage if there's not enough oil in your car's engine, but today I'm going to break down some engine oil myths and explain what you should and shouldn't do with the oil in your engine.

@@ECPP thanks for the videos. i just changed my oil myself for the 1st time in my 2021 4 runner. i put 6.6 qts in. the oil is so clean i cant tell where oil is on dipstick. im pretty sure i have enough i have right amount of oil. i did not pre oil y filter. any suggestions on how i can read the dipstick accurately. im new to this. thanks for your help

I put 5 quarts in a 4.4 capacity. I drove and everything seem fine but I'm still concerned. Do you think being over by 0.6 is too much?

@Nix-qq5je on some setups it may be. On most engines you're probably ok but i wouldn't chance it. I'd drain out a tiny bit if you can. Invest in some ramps so it's easy to access the drain plug and don't give it full throttle until you drain some. If you take out too much either top it back off with oil, or some Lucas oil stabilizer. A little bit of that never hurt, especially in this hot weather

@@Nix-qq5je Me too. I have a Camry 2014 and I also put 5 quarts in a 4.6 capacity. The oil level is tiny bit more than the max level on the dip stick when the engine is fully heat up.

My Toyota dealer overfilled my oil by 50% of the acceptable range. When confronted, the service manager lied to me by saying "overfill is OK, and can be good for the engine". I told him that he's full of BS and stopped servicing my Toyota with that dealer. It turns out, they never replaced the oil filter because they overtighten and couldn't remove the plastic oil filter housing. But they put in the same amount of oil as if the filter and the oil in the oil filter housing were removed. I now trust only my DIY oil change.

I just bought a used 2021 Highlander for my wife. We got home and I checked the oil and it was half an inch above the full line on the dipstick. I got the same answer when I asked about it being too full.

@@snakedoctor5397 more than likely that they did a quick flush and fill of the oil. It saved them $2 in part. And who cares about what it does the engine. I recommend finding a different place, a place you can trust.

@@snakedoctor5397 FYI, overfilled the engine with oil causes frothing of the oil, ie air bubbles in the oil. And that reduces the lubricating ability of the oil. Bad stuff!

I’m a DIY kinda guy because I have learned over the years that you cannot trust repair/service shops to do things correct, mistakes are made.

@@billwilson6096Yes, although I'm not mechanically inclined.. I atleast do oil changes with high quality and filters every 3k miles.. usually its Mobile 1 but I'm trying Liqui Moly Hi Tec oil and may try some of oil additives. They are a German supplier and make excellent quality oils! I do my auto transmission fluid every 15-20k .. I may go back to M1 because Liqui Moly is very, very expensive. Cost me about $100 dollars more than I would pay for Mobile 1 . Past 3-4k engines get microscopic carbon buildup in the oil (also partially the reason oil turns black over time) and it acts like sandpaper to the internals! Many people are getting lab tests done but they many times overlook this crucial component of oil ...I choose to change every 3k miles or less! A new engine for my car is 4 times (!!!!!) the value of my car... so yeah I'll spend an extra

After an oil change, whether by the minimum wage earning " oil change technician" at a 10 Minute Oil Change franchise or the novice "certified" mechanic at your dealer's service department, check the oil in the parking lot before you leave the facility. Check for level and cleanliness (and that they did, in fact change the oil filter). Don't trust anyone who makes their living with a socket wrench.

You can use a pump from a liquid soap and an aquarium hose from Petco, connect it together and pump out the excessive amount of oil from the engine. Thats what i did when i heeded it

1/2 liter over is generally not a problem. I’ve done it myself from time to time. But when you approach a liter or more past the max mark, you’re asking for trouble.

Excellent PSA here. Too much oil can be detrimental to the engine. Speaking of oil I'm sure you're rooting for Edmonton to get the Cup!!

I appreciate the education and guidance I’ve recently purchased my first bmw 2004 530i and I’ve taken your philosophy on maintaining this beautiful car full transmission rebuild. For peace of mind. I replaced my radiator water pump and expansion tank along with all rubber hoses. Replaced front and rear shock and strut brand new tires new battery car re coded along with front and rear control arms and related parts along with new brakes all around New spark plugs and wires. Non of this was a pressing issue or needed to be done but I want peace of mind owning this thing. Now I might consider doing an exhaust but that’s it for performance. Thank you for the advice or treating a bmw proper.

I'd say not enough is much worse than, too much? I will admit, I run a little bit more oil in my one vehicle, than I would ever recommend anyone else try? Anywhere from a 1/2 qt. to 1 qt? The worst that could happen, is blow out a seal, hopefully not a rear main or front main, but I have never had any issues, been observing the process for years, with no issues? Not enough oil is a huge issue, I won't have to go into, as common sense will take care of that one? What people don't realize, is that the lower the oil drops in an engine, the faster it is consumed? Great job, sir.

Thank you. I will drain it this weekend. I just bought the car about 2 weeks ago. I looked at the oil at the dealership and it smelled and seemed fine but I checked it 2 days ago after it had sat over night in my garage (level) and it looks to be about a half quart over. Going to "pull the plug" over my drain pan, let it down, check it, top off as needed. Run to operating temp, cut it off, let sit for a while top it again as needed.

I took my truck to a Jiffy lube years ago, they overfilled the engine. I drove it for a week or two before I checked the oil. It was probably a couple of quarts too much. The reason I checked it was it was smoking with around 45000 miles.That was the last time I ever went to Jiffy lube.

However, I have already seen quite a few negative comments about this Jiffy lube, so they must really be quite superficial. Otherwise, I don't know this company because I'm not American, but European.

Walmart vehicle service is worse than Jiffy Lube. And, these quick lube places are always trying to sell you items for your car that you don't need at the moment.

Took my Mercedes to jiffy lube. They claim they could change my brakes and rotors. Caught them watching KZfaq later. It took a whole day and the brakes were worse than I gave them. Went to Mercedes and was told they didn't know how to take care of the calipers before handling the brakes. Cost me $1000 to get a new caliper pair

A plastic oil dipstick! Once that thing disintegrates, the little pieces will go straight to the oil pump intake screen and clog it pretty good. What are the car manufacturers thinking these days? Too much plastic everywhere!

I just bring the engine oil that i purchased to my mechanic, and i bring a little bit less than it's supposed to be...the rest of it i add myself if needed.

I heard that the bottom end can froth up the oil if too full and then the oil is full of air and is no longer technically liquid. Bad news bears people.

my old Toyota corolla only took a bit over 3 quarts with oil filter and almost every dam oil change i would get mid-winter because I drove lots of miles, they would just throw in 4 or 5 quarts even though i wrote the amounts in paint marker and weight, filter, even wrench size for drain plug. on plastic shroud above radiator. so would have my dam car overfilled by these idiots every time. always try to change my own oil if there is not a foot of snow on the ground.

At times i put 4 liters total and the manufacturer suggests 3.8 liters. Its fine never had issues. But i started going putting back to 3.8 -3.9 liters when diy oil changes

Thats fine, you would only be at risk of damage if you ended putting 750- 1 litre above the fill level as most cars would still run fine if you have 200-300 ml over

Can you show me on the dipstick how much is too much? I had a leak and put oil in now it’s above the xxxxxxxx area on the dip. How far above that is okay and how much is too much and need to abort driving until I drain it? My oil filter is a side facing one I might just loosen that then tighten after some comes out

Too little oil may lead to the VVT not working properly. Not sure about too much oil tho.

If, after driving on the highway (speeds over 55 mph) for over 5 miles, there are bubbles on the dipstick itself, then you are over-filled. You want to check it as soon as you park after driving it like that. The foaming bubbles is the bad sign.

In no way am I mechanic I’ve never picked up a wrench on a car before but I think too much oil is bad because it overflows and can probably mess up key components of ur vehicle I think a little bit over is fine because we aren’t perfect but if your like adding a extra 2/3 quarts and you don’t need it then I think it’s bad

It's all good until we still have oil deepsticks. In many cases we have to rely on the computer only.

For sure a lot of modern cars like BMWs only run electronic systems so it’s more difficult to validate

It is likely Ok. Not ideal but I have had a similar situation and 0.1 over is rarely too much of a problem. 11/4 L is certainly too much
