Thanks for another informative video. Here's our newbie RV and tow vehicle experience. Last June, we purchased a Little Guy Mini Max and a Honda Ridgeline, which had a towing package. Our most common trip is driving 330 miles from Madison to western UP, where we own some land. Though rated for 5000 pounds, our Ridgeline was not up to task. About three to four hours in to our trip up there and our return trip home, a warning light came on saying that the transmission fluid was overheating. Honda advised us to manually turn off the overdrive and to not drive above 55 mph. We decided to get a more capable two vehicle instead. We looked at the Tundra but opted on new 2018 F-150 diesel 4x4. When it was still warm, we were getting 25 to 28 mpg on highway (not towing) and 14-15 mpg towing the Mini Max. I typically drive at 73 on the interstate and 63 on the rural highways if not towing and around 67 and 63 if towing. In the fall, we sold the Mini Max and have purchased a Nucamp 400 (wanted something a bit bigger and better built).

Informative video, thank you. A vehicle to consider in the future. New to the TAB, we opted to stay with our 2013 Subaru Tribeca, AWD 3.0 L 6 cylinder equipped with a towing option, mainly upgraded transmission oil cooler and Class 1 hitch rated to maximum 3500 lbs. Pulling the trailer we get about 11 MPG on average and the only drawback right now is the frequent stops for gas due to a small gas tank. We use a wireless brake controller, the Curt Echo rather than a hard wired controller with no issues. We've hauled the trailer once on a long trip, about 1000 miles with no issues pulling it.

I’ve a 2018 (RWD crew cab 5’ bed) Chevy Colorado Duramax Diesel towing my 2019 Tab 400. I never get less than 16 MPGs (18 on flat highway) on average and that includes 6-9 % grade roads. 30 MPGs highway/20 city without the trailer. Truck is rated at 7700 lbs towing capacity. The diesel option includes a complete towing package: 7/4 pin connector, dash mounted brake controller, tow haul mode and exhaust braking mode. I can tow without sway bars since it’s incredibly stable. I tend to cruise at 65 (sweet spot) or higher. Worth considering if you’re looking fo a new TV. Keep up the good work, Patrick!

Well. Had a 5.3L 2010 Chevy Silverado 4-wheel drive, crew cab and standard bed. Has tow package. Love it. However when buying our first “new” RV we took the dealers word that the camper we really liked would be within all limits of my truck (passionately named “Rocky”). But since getting the camper home and taking it out on a few trips I feel the dealer did NOT paint a clear picture of my tow issues. Rocky has enough power and all the gauges show a healthy picture. But because I wasn’t very experienced yet on towing travel trailers and putting too much trust in the dealer, I’m basically maxed out as far as “loaded” weight goes. Therefore we have good trailer breaks, a great weight distribution hitch with a sway bar and my goal is to never exceed 65 mph. But it all makes my towing a little more stressful. Not to mention my wandering eyes as I pass truck lots!!! You guys are one of our favorite channels. Keep up the great episodes!
@TravelswithDelaney4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tony! Sadly some RV dealers are more about the sale than the best interests of the consumer. We have definitely been in that situation that you are earlier in our RV life. It sounds like you have everything you need in place for a safe tow even though you might be on the upper end of your load capacity.

SOLD!! Oh wait, you weren't trying to sell me YOUR truck, were you? Lol! GREAT video, Patrick, and I learned the importance of looking for a good tow pkg. Really liked the demo of the back seat legroom and seat uses too. As you know, we started out towing our Little Guy Max with our 2005 Envoy but it strained up inclines so traded for a 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 - like you, there were budget issues and buying a lower mileage used truck just seemed smarter. It's a great 'basic' truck and we don't even know the trailer is behind us. I WILL tell you I miss the heated seats, tho...😂 ~ 💜

We drive a 2017 Honda Ridgeline, we did get an upper trim level and tow package. We love the trunk inside of the truck bed, very useful. The back seats swing up and lock for a flat floor in the back, they are a 60/40 split. SUV like ride and very comfortable seats, front and back. We did add a folding hard cover for the bed, bought on line and self installed. The passenger side mirror has a camera that is awesome, we wish it was on both sides, it allows us to see to the very back of the right side of our Tab400. No problems on the Rocky mountains out to Seattle, and to Texas and back twice. Both seats are power and heated, great for our backs we are in our late 60's. Lots of cup holders, and the tailgate swings down, and additionally out like a car door. We get 25 mpg on the highway, and 11 to 15 mpg depending on the elevation while towing. If it's flat, we get 15mpg while towing. It does have settings for sand, snow, e.t.c. SiriusXM also, and satellite GPS which worked great in Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Our phones didn't work in Yellowstone. So we were thankful for the GPS.

I have a 2014 F150 with a 3.7 V6; 6 speed trans and 3.73 rear drive in a 2wd regular cab. I pull a 2017 Casita Liberty that weighs about 2900 the way I have it usually loaded. I have taken to using tow/haul when towing to keep the truck engine from lugging on hills. I get about 19-21 mpg empty in mixed driving (no interstate, 22-24 interstate) and 15-16 mpg when towing. Other than on hills the motor will usually run 2000 or less rpm on the flat when towing, the steepest I have towed was in the mountains of Tennessee (7% grade) where the rpms climbed to 4000 a very few times and the trans dropped to 4th gear. Usually a steep hill will make the trans go to 5th gear (again, only some of the time) or often 6th gear will do the job. I am overall very pleased with how well this rig works as a whole. I have always liked Tabs and Max trailers. Love seeing other small campers in campgrounds.

Great video - as usual - thanks Patrick. I pull our 2019 Little Guy MiniMax (dry weight 1993 lbs) with a 2017 Tacoma SR5 4x4 that has the factory tow package. First time we towed up Vermont's Green Mountains, I was concerned about the RPM jump into the low 4000 range. Researching the Atkinson V6 on Tacoma World unveils, expectedly, many opinions; mostly positive and general consensus that "this engine performs best (torque) at higher revs." Looking at your tach on the video, the engine tone was entirely familiar as your Taco made the climb. Just got back to MA (Covid-interrupted trip) after ~5500 miles south and southwest, averaging between 12/14 mpg. Love our Taco (and our Teardrop)! I know it's considered blasphemous - by some - for Little Guy (now Xtreme Outdoors) and Nu Camp owners to commune 😉, but wanted to let you and Patty know that my wife and I love your channel and the greater teardrop community it engages. Stay well!

Excellent review of the Tacoma. I don’t know if you have winter fuel but I can promise you that if you do, that is the reason for the fuel MPG drop. Here in Utah, if I use fuel from the county I work in, my MPG drops 3 MPG compared to the winter fuel I get in the county I live in. That is compared to the summer fuel in which I get 2-3 MPG more than any winter fuel. So 44 MPG becomes 38 MPG in the winter! My tow vehicle was a 2015 Chevy Silverado 4x4 double cab 4x4 5.3l 6sp 3.42 standard bed. The truck has a 1730 lb payload and with a ARE shell it weighed 5380 full of gas. GVW is 7200 lbs. Loading the truck with trailer stuff, a 65 lb generator and WD hitch it weighed 6400 lbs. That is with my wife and I on board. Oh and the max trailer towing rating for the truck is 9,400 lbs. Our trailer is a 2020 Grand Design Imagine XLS 17MKE and it weighs 4900 lbs before propane tanks, batteries or stuff. Loaded it is close to 5400 lbs and a tongue weight of a little over 600 lbs. So we were with in a couple hundred pounds of max weight for the truck. Took 4 trips totaling 6,000 miles and came away with the following. My MPG went from 6.5 to a high of 9.1 MPG. The truck spent most of the time in 4th gear turning 2900 RPM @ 65 MPH. There were times I was in 2nd gear doing 35-40mph! The truck felt fine, drove well but the power train was definitely getting worked. I towed in freezing weather up to over 100 degrees. Max transmission temp got up to 215 degrees and coolant temps stayed within normal (210 degrees) The 3.42 gears while did excellent in MPG empty (21-22 MPG at 70-75 MPH) it was not great when towing. I was able to get a real good deal on a close out 2019 Silverado 2500 HD that was the same truck (body wise) so this allowed me to take all the accessories off my 2015 and put them on the 2019. So the new truck has 6.0 lt 6 speed gas, 4x4 Double cab , 4.10 with towing package and everything I needed in the truck. We took a trip down to Capital reef which worked the truck pretty well (35-40 mph headwinds, up to 8,000 foot passes) and the first tank was 7.5 MPG. But wow does this truck tow different than the old truck. Gearing is improved so most of the time I’m in 5th doing 68-70 MPH @ 2,500 RPM. The truck empty weighs 6400 lbs with a full tank of gas (36 gallons compared to 26 on the old truck) and 3,000 lb payload. This means that I’ll have well over 1,000 lb buffer (more like 1,300 + ) while going down the road. MPG coming home driving 70 mph was 9.6 MPG and the truck only has 1,000 miles on it. I think a video may be coming of my setup once I figure out editing. Soon! Take care and stay safe! Bill in Utah

Good video. Id advise taking the transmission out of overdrive when going up any inclines. The upshifting and downshifting is hard on the transmission and if you don't want to push the rpm's so much uphill you can maintain a slower speed without any upshifting back into OD. I've owned many Toyota and never tow with the OD on.

Going from your Forerunner to the Tacoma, do you see any difference in the degree of difficulty backing into a camp spot?

Look at the Jeep Gladiator. I love mine! With the Max Tow package you can tow a 7700 pound trailer. I wouldn't recommend maxing out that heavy but it will tow a loaded out Tab 400 with zero problems. Plus it has an 8 speed transmission so it is always in the right gear for power.

Great Video! I was searching for a video about a Tacoma and it's towing capability with a trailer in 4K to 5K area. You covered everything in a great informative way. I do have a couple questions, did you you use the ECT for supposedly extra power while towing and did you stay in manual the entire time or did you use the manual shift feature to move between gears better? All and all fantastic info and great job. Take care and happy travels.
@TravelswithDelaney2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Dan! I never even bothered with the ECT. Most of the time, I was just in automatic. If we needed to use the engine for braking coming down large hills or mountains, I would then switch over to manual and downshift myself.

Just took delivery of a 2020 Tab 400, we were planning a long sojourn across the USA next spring, not sure about that as we might have to stay home north of the border for a year or two till the various viral issues sort themselves out. That being said , I enjoyed your review of the Tacoma and note your obvious satisfaction with the Forerunner. I’m going to have to buy a new tow vehicle and wonder if anyone has any experience using a late model Highlander for this purpose? They have the same tow ratings as the Forerunner
@TravelswithDelaney4 жыл бұрын
When we bought the 4Runner, we had originally planned to get a Highlander. Our dealer suggested we go with he 4Runner because it is on a truck chassis and he said it would be more stable. At that time though we had a 22' trailer that weight 3500# empty. My guess is that the Highlander would be ok with a T@B 400.

Good info for the Tacoma. I would never buy a used one. I was going to buy a 4-Runner because the 4-door Tacoma would not fit into my garage. I could not find a Loaded 4-wheel drive 2-door Tacoma in Texas. I changed my mind and bought a RDX instead because I didn't like the handling and power of the 4-Runner. Nor did I like the old style dash of the 4-Runner.

We have a 2020 T@B 400 BDL that we tow with a manual 2018 Tacoma 4dr, Offroad, short bed and an automatic 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We tow with the Jeep as it gets about 30% better fuel economy (13mpg vs. 10mpg) and the engine produces more power in the lower ranges (Toyota's tuning of the 3.5L for economy leaves much to be desired, imho). That said, we do use the Tacoma when we head to Maine and I was considering a suspension upgrade to make the Tacoma a more pleasant tow vehicle. While the Jeep has a self-leveling rear suspension, the Tacoma tends to sag when towing the TAB. I've been considering either the Firestone Ride-Rite airbags or the Roadmaster Active Suspension system to address this issue and wondered if anyone here had experience with either.
@TravelswithDelaney4 жыл бұрын
We had the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System installed on our 4Runner to take out some sag with it and that worked really well for us. It was $250 installed and the 4runner actually rode better even when not towing.

Did you recently upgrade to a Tundra? If so, curious as to what the mpg difference was both towing and otherwise. I've found that my tacoma is happy with a bed full of gear or towing our T@B 400 but not both. The TRD Offroad suspension that is nice and soft driving around town just seems to sag a bit too much when towing with a bed full of gear.

We did upgrade to a Tundra. We have actually only lost about 1-1.5mpg gallon towing the Lance. I thought it might drop more than that.

I have a Nucamp Tag XL boondock camper and I’ve been looking at the new tacoma to buy cause I have been thinking about going to the full time RV lifestyle and was considering a Tacoma for pulling a bigger travel trailer to live in. But after watching a few videos of the tacos pulling capability of pulling I’m not so sure that’s the route I want to go now. I pull my teardrop with a 2020 Subaru outback and I get better gas mileage pulling my camper as everyone does driving the taco everyday. I get 22 to 22.5 mpg when pulling my camper. I will be honest I have always wanted a new Tacoma truck for 45 plus years but just never bought one or was not in a position to afford one but now that I’m retired I can. But just not sold on them pulling a 20 to 25 foot travel trailer. But if I did I would go with a certified used one instead of a new one. But just hate buying one with somebody else’s miles on it. But you do get a better mileage warranty with a certified one. But here it is the end of 2023 and the prices for a used one is about the same as a new one. But I love my outback as a daily driver but I’ve been without a truck for 12 or 13 years now and that’s the longest I’ve ever been without a truck to drive.

Sad to say, while it's a pleasing (we owned one) and reliable truck, it's unlikely to satisfy you with your new Lance 1985. Your lance will be close to its 5700# GVWR when ready for camping (with very little water) and a tongue weight in the 800# neighborhood. That GVWR is ~90% of the Tacoma's max rating, quite a bit higher than what you'll find most folks recommend. Mind you, in the flat Southeast it will work if the Tacoma's rear axle rating is met. Neighbors had your same truck (TRD and Tow) and, for a trailer of the same size, found it just wasn't up to the job out West. Run your numbers carefully and also check in with the gurus at LOA. We want you two to *enjoy* your new Lance and be safe.

Thanks again.

Hey Patrick, great timing for this video, as just prior to the virus situation I was shopping for a pickup truck to tow my yet to be purchased RV (either a Tab 400, or a Little Guy Max). I had it narrowed down to a Ford F-150 or a Toyota Tacoma. I want to get a 6-cylinder gas vehicle with tow package, and have been leaning towards the Tacoma. I see you bought a 4-wheel drive. Do you feel that it's necessary as opposed to a 2-wheel drive? Based on what I've heard, the 4-wheel drive is more expensive to purchase, as well as maintain, so I would prefer to get the 2-wheel drive, but would love to hear your opinion on the pros and cons of each. Thanks!
@moduc9964 жыл бұрын
Hi Ric, I would strongly recommend to get the 4 wheel drive with the tow package. I had the Tacoma Off Road but some of their models had transmission issues. Mine had a problem switching gears between 5th and 6th with or without towing the Tab 400. I wouldn’t have traded it in for the Tundra because I love the Tacoma.
@robertpanick26604 жыл бұрын
I have a Colorado with the V6 engine and ZR2 off road package which is similar to the TRD Pro. The V6 has more than enough power, but if you're heading out west with some serious inclines you'll have to back off the speed going over some of the passes. Its not a big issue, you'll get over, just at 50 mph, which is still faster than the semis. One thing to be careful of is the payload rating and the tongue weight. As Patrick I think mentioned is his is about 460 lbs, which is where I think mine is. The 2020 T@Bs had the Air 8 which shifted weight aft and lowered the tongue weight. Tongue weight plus cargo, including passenger weight must be less than payload limits. My Colorado has been close to the limits on payload, I've cut back some what I carry. But its also why I'm thinking of going to a full size truck when the lease is up. A full size truck will have 500 lbs more payload than my Colorado. Will you need 4x4, a lot of that depends on what you do. I like to go explore in places where a 4x4 is useful. I've only needed it once though while towing. We were coming out of a camp area that had a pretty serious climb to get out of the camping area. The road was gravel and I could feel the back end losing traction, so I dropped it into 4x4 mode and climbed it no problems. Would we have made it without it, maybe, maybe not.

My Tundra was a 2 wheel drive and I always regretted not getting 4 wheel drive on it. I personally like 4 wheel drive especially where we live with the snow in the winter. If I start to get stuck, I can switch it to 4 wheel drive and it will walk right out. I also had 4WD on the 4Runner. I actually got stuck onetime with my Tundra in mud with our 5th wheel attached and could not get out. My dad had the same Tundra with 4WD and he was able to hook on to my truck with a log chain and he pulled both my truck and 5th wheel out of the mud with no issues. That was when I decided I was going to get a 4WD in the future. That's just my reasoning for liking the 4WD. I will tell you one downside. I had a tire get a puncture in it back in December that was too big to patch. With 4WD, you have to replace all 4 tires where as a 2WD, I could have just replace a pair. Hope that helps some.

@@TravelswithDelaney Thanks for your response Patrick. I appreciate and respect your opinion. The only reason I've been hesitant to go ahead and get 4WD, is the initial higher purchase price paired with the more expensive ongoing maintenance.

We did not purchase 4WD, since we do not go off roading. We are in California and travel the western states mostly.
