As with almost everything, you get out what you put in and that is especially true with education, particularly skills like these. My pitch if I were to summarize it is this: You are paying a lot for a name, a name that doesn't really mean anything in the real world. If you apply yourself and work hard you can excel but just because you spent money doesn't mean you automatically get the skills. Figure out if you have an aptitude for this sort of work and make sure you at least somewhat enjoy it before spending 10s of thousands of dollars.

@MotorheadRodo thanks for the info! And I totally agree, if the government got out of the student loan business we would see more competitive schools from a cost stand point and lower tuition costs.

@@RogueWrenching I graduate in June. Recently I’ve been looking at a community college and their automotive program. They do Toyota and Lexus. I’m leaning towards that and taking that route

@@lwkyoscar I've been researching UNOH quite a bit,I should have a video in a week or so, it looks like a pretty good school but it still expensive, what would your community college cost?

@@RogueWrenching 6,000 a year. But while I’m taking the automotive program, in my second year they give me a internship at a dealership. They give me the internship so I can put in practice of what I know and they pay me too.

Clint, There's no one size fits all answer to your question, if you've been in the industry long enough to know it's a good fit for you and you've decided to pursue this as a career, I'd say if you have family that is paying for the schooling it's a great way to start off. But, if the options are borrow money for school or stay working, I'd say keep working, try and get hired doing oil changes as a "lube tech" at an independent shop where as you learn and grow your talents and skills there's room to move up. I have personally never worked for a dealer but I've worked with people who have and I've heard stories, my understanding is that it is extremely hard to move from being a lube tech up to a tech at a dealer unless you're willing to compromise your integrity and rip people off. Again that's not my experience just what I've heard. So I guess bottom line is no, don't give In to pressure from family, if they don't work In the industry they don't understand, there are techs bringing in well over 6 figures with no college. Then there's UTI grads bringing in 30k. So it really depends on the individual. But I will tell you having zero debt besides my home has made this current crisis much easier to navigate. I honestly don't think internal combustion engines are going anywhere personally but I do know that less than 3% of automotive techs are qualified to work on EV / Hybrid vehicles. If your looking for a good investment get certified to work on EVs. But the biggest thing is don't go into debt to get an education.

Nick, thanks for taking the time to reply here and for sharing your experience, I wholeheartedly agree with you, if you've been around anything mechanical just jump into the industry. It's not worth the money to go to UTI.

@catalyst_99 no... it’s nothing but dealership bullshit. NASCAR engines 1 and 2 is as close to performance classes as you’ll get there.... and even then it’s nascar and carburetor related.... Unless you’re a balls to the wall nascar fan, it ain’t for you

THE COOL GUY yea that’s true also. The thing is they pay for “semesters” in advance. It keeps you locked in for the remainder of phase not yet completed.

@@allthehardtimes That is a super unfortunate reality, lots of students are drowning in debt with useless training in a field they won't stay in.

But the important thing is that this trade is highly technical and if a person wants to succeed they NEED training, so while I don't think they should go to UTI I think they need to take every training they can possibly get.

I ran a CNC for a while, and did CAD for a industrial cabinet shop, it's definitely a solid career but didn't suit me well.

From guys I know who have gone they teach you years 3-5 skills while brushing over the entry level skills you actually need. I'm not saying there's no good techs that come out of there but most fresh grads are terrible techs. I would personally strongly advise against it, if you want to get into the industry you aren't gonna start at 16/hr, but you can get there in a few years. There are good techs out there making well north of 6 figures. Now that being said you gotta love what you do because if you just want the easiest path to 60k+ per year you'll get there way faster driving a truck than working on one.

Get into ups they pay $30 to $40/hr

Aditya, I do not have any inside info on that and we don't yet have the official numbers from UTI, pre covid they where trending up, not sure if they are even open. But look around at what was considered "essential" who stayed working the whole time? Pursue one of those careers.

Generally speaking I agree with you, where I don't agree is it being a bad career that doesn't pay well. I know of shops in my area who are desperate for good techs and are paying $45+/hr, I'm not saying you'll make as much money as a doctor or lawyer but there's good money to be made in this field. It's definitely not for everyone though and it's hard work but that is part of ot being a skilled trade. If a person was wanting to get I to the trade on the job training is the best. Get a job as an entry level GS or shop helper. Start with cleaning the floors and running parts. Personal opinion here, don't waste your time with a tire shop. Learn tires, don't be afraid of tires but no tire shop is going to pay master tech wages.

Automotive mechanics is a dead career.

The case I'm making here is the paper your graduate with is worthless. Where you go to school has no bearing on your employment, your attitude and skill set define your employment. Good training is good but degree vs no degree has zero benefit in the real world.

@@danielguerra626 I will do some research but personally I think all these name brand schools are incredibly over priced for the benefit to the student. I would advise anyone going into the industry to steer clear of big schools like this. But no matter what taking out student loans to get an education for this industry is always a bad idea.

I only paid $2000 dollars for a bachelors degree. I'm currently an Industrial Electrician, last year I made $214,000.

Are you looking for just flashing as in o.e. software or are you looking more custom performance tune type stuff?

@@DJ-kq5yp As far as o.e. the best training you can get is going to be with the dealer, on the job usage of o.e. scan tools including flashing ect is all best learned on the job. I've personally used the Ford IDS extensively and have taken a few classes on it and in my experience simply having time to play with it and learn where to find stuff is more valuable than the classroom. So in short, if there's a particular brand you want to learn you can either go work for a dealer and you'll learn by doing or find an independent shop that has the o.e. scan tool and learn by doing that way. I wouldn't advise spending any money on schooling, it's not a super hard thing to do, and with 3 or 4 different o.e. scan tools I've used, the hardest thing is knowing where in the tool the function is located. Once you've selected the function the tool walks you through step by step. It's not nearly as complex as it may seem. Now I've only flashed domestic vehicles I don't have any experience flashing euro vehicles and that is a whole different animal that may require more specialized training. Either way, it's not something you can really learn very wheel without actually doing it in a real life shop environment. That's my thoughts on the matter. What is it you're wanting to do / where are you in your career now? I may be able to give you a more specific answer with more info. The shop I work at now only has the Ford scan tool, anything else we need there's a mobile guy who we sublet flashing and programming out to.

I'm not telling you what to do with your life, but i want to caution you, research the options, look at cost of school vs realistic job outlook don't use the school's numbers, go find out what people are paying an immediate grad.

@Mjay Queezy so I'm in the automotive / diesel world, so things may be different, but in my industry, certification means almost nothing. It's all about being able to do the job well. Certification helps get you in the door, that's it. Lots of people have more certifications than I do, and I can still work circles around them.
