Maybe this makes me a "guru" but I just can't give away everything I know for free, I'm sorry. I want to help people, but trying to help everybody requires a lot more time, effort, and energy than I initially thought. And doing everything for free just took time away from me running my own agency and I wasn't really able to help people because I was just giving 1 sentence answers to very complex and complicated questions.
So, I created The Mogul thinking that it would be better to FULLY help 1 person, than to partially help 100 people. Everything, all in one place to help someone succeed to the best of my ability while getting paid for my work. I'm pretty confident I can bring anyone success as long as they are willing to put in the effort on their end. If you watched my free videos on KZfaq, imagine the value I would give you if I was actually getting paid.

I tried the freelance life for a year, put a lot of effort into it but it didn't work out for me. There's a lot of competition and a lot of scammer clients. I went back to a normal job and life is much simpler.

Respect to you for putting in the hard work. Good riddens of that customer. How unfair, punishing the working guy. Never engage with royalty customers like that one again. He sent his assistant for discussions and then just yelled without knowing all the infos. That is the tyran customer. Avoid that kind of person at all costs. You need to know to select your customers. That is why a video call is very important. You need to make sure the customer is a humble, reasonable person, has all the infos and is engadged. Ask all the questions upfront. If he doesn't have the patience for them, say goodbye.

Appreciate this but i think better would be to reach out to clients by yourself and pick clients by yourself,just pick a niche and choose a channel. I think most of the clients on platforms they expect for you to know what they need because they don’t know exactly to explain the work that is needed,plus they are cheap and needy and you don’t give them expectations

One trick I've used with difficult clients is canceling the contract once I see they are unreasonable. Generally the don't know they have 15 days to leave feedback. It's a risk but it worked a few times ;).

Thanks for the insight. I have been on Upwork for a while but its just met with dissapointment. One client did not even bother to pay me even when the task completed (though this client was too fussy). DId a lot of upfront prep for each proposals but no reply. It just not easy!

I don't know what your profession is, but I started about a couple of months ago, sent over 80 proposals, and got one job for $25. It's worth mentioning that, like you, I spend some time on each proposal. So yea, it's very, very hard.

@@shuvra-kumar-das That is my main issue. I got a $25 job and spent roughly $80. Three months later, I have a little over $1,350 in earnings, and I believe I spent around $200 on connects. If you're thinking about making money on Upwork, consider this: to get the "Top Rated" badge, you need to make over $1,000 in the last 12 months. That will place you within the top 12% of earners on Upwork. To get the "Top Rated Plus" badge, you need to make more than $10,000 in the last 12 months. Only 3% of freelancers have this badge. This means Upwork as a main source of income makes absolutely no sense for people living in the Western world.

I took a look at it and found it almost wholly waste of time. It takes so long to find a job that isn't insane that your time is much much better spent just doing your own projects on KZfaq and Patreon. I work in game design and development and most work is someone wanting you to steal your own work and give it to them for minimum pay. Or they want a best selling MMO in 1 month. It's actually ridiculous. Then Upwork doesn't really filter. So you get days where you're flooded with art requests that frequently have nothing to do with your field let alone your specialty. So just focus on your KZfaq and Patreon and then leverage those on a professional page like LinkedIn to get an actual stable job (that generally pays more).

I don’t know anything about upwork, but do clients get reviews? It seems it would be helpful. If it was me, I think your view of giving them what they want to hear is a good approach. But I think also recognizing when there is a dependency on the client and how you could get setup to take the fall. Making sure everything is documented if possible so that boss could get all the details presented to him. I think the other manager should have handled that differently. It’s not ethical that the manager let you take the fall.
@chillydoog

Man, thank you for this advice. I feel like your situation with that bad client is so typical of agencies, especially when they hold so much leverage over you. I didn't realize they could just end the contract and drop you so quickly and then tarnish your reputation. That's such a dick move. Do you have any advice on how to filter out these potentially toxic clients? It seems like once you're in a contract with them they just hold all the power over you as a freelancer. I would love to know if you have found any red flags to look out for to avoid getting into these situations in the future.

Is ageism or ghosting something a person has to worry about with Upwork? I was part of a round of layoffs and when I was applying for full time jobs, my unemployment coach told me to take all my credentials off my resume otherwise it shows how old I am and people would think I've over qualified and I'd never get an interview. Is that similar in the freelancing world?

Man, I have been on Upwork since 2016 - Expert Vetted Freelancer. Yet, not able to find any descent project for the last one year or so. Contradictoty to what you are saying, the number of freelancers from US and Canada has grown a lot since Covid and its much harder for someone outside North America or UK / EU to compete (like in my case). What is more suprising is that those freelancers from western countries are offering a very competitive rates these days. Nobody cares about pension and medical insurances anymore - instead operating from cheaper cities without 9-5 commitment

@@ThomasIm thanks for your response. Here is what I read on an Upwork forum: If you refund and the earnings 0 from the contract only public feedback will be hidden, any positive or negative private feedback is still counted towards JSS calculation. If the project value is high do not agree to the refund, go for feedback removal option available to Top Rated. If she is determined to leave a bad feedback you are better off ending the contract yourself. If you have completed the contract as per the terms discussed and agreed do agree to refund.

I don't accept jobs until there are clear expectations on the work scope and quotes In your case I think the best you can do is just send a final message letting your client know your price for the project and that you can start as soon as they confirm After that, move on.
