Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐
*My van is a 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 High Roof, 136" WB with 47K miles*

Whatever path you choose, I hope you continue with your storytelling. Your imagery and stories are both meaningful and beautiful, and you have a gift for it. Of the hundreds of YT story telling channels, yours easily stands above the crowd. My stepfather spent his life as a scenic photographer, mostly with large format 4x5 & 8x10 cameras, capturing amazing photos of our national parks and landscapes over a 40 year span, and having seen all his beautiful work, it's clear you have a talented eye for composition. I hope you keep rolling:-)

I feel you. I've travelled most of 2022, working remotely on the tiniest of desks, sitting on the most uncomfortable airBnB chairs with spotty internet connection. Again and again, I found myself making sacrifices. Skipping workouts, because I have a lot of work to catch up with and I have only two days to see the amazing city/area I'm in. And, oh, I did not buy anything to eat, because yday my newly met flatmate invited me to a jam session. Guess I'm eating fast food today again... But how can you NOT make those sacrifices? When faced with the jaw-dropping world out there, how can you NOT engage with it fully? How can you say no to the adventures? Not meet all of those colorful people and not hear their stories? I've grown tenfold that year. I collected so many beautiful moments/memories. Isn't that what life is? A collection of moments? But I know it was not sustainable for me at that time. I projected it over the next two years and looked closely at that projected person. Do I want to be that? Truth be told, I don't know. Sometimes I find it hard to distinguish what I really want from what society made me believe I want. Most likely I'll regroup this year and go travel again in 2024. It is true that the stability of a flat/house is liberating. You gain freedom to dedicate more of your resources to things you care about. Work, a personal project or hobbies. Big city like one where I'll be staying this year has a lot of perks: quality movies in underground cinemas, great theatre plays, meetups, dance classes, a community of friends -- all just a bus away. Nonetheless I fear this stability. It is predictable and might get boring. I will most likely get desensitized to all the above perks. On the road novelty is around each corner. Both the amazing and the dreadful are a novelty. The whole year I felt so energized, like a kid exploring the world and through it -- life. I think I will have to fight hard not to starve my hunger for experiences. An antidote I can think about right now is a goal ambitious enough to keep me excitied throughout the year. The way I'm trying to thing about it is to explore what I can do with this stability like I'd explore a mountain track or new city's bustling alleys. It is in the human nature that we get used to our environment. I guess it's our biggest blessing and a curse. Travelling, I noticed that when visiting friends I haven't seen for long time. The interactions were just so much more intense when the meeting was scheduled spontaneously and we didn't know when we'll see each other again. That is just not the case when you are living 20 minutes from each other. So I think the make-shift strategy I have now is to change it up every now and then. Don't let myself get too used to the stability by pursuing an ambitious goal. Don't let myself make too many sacrifices while traveling. Granted, it's a thin, red line to balance on. I'm sure you will be happy regardless of the path you will choose. The grass will always be greener whether you make the switch or not. As always, I'm looking forward your next video. Whether the backdrop for it will be snowy mountains or snow-capped trash cans in your new neighbourhood, I'm sure it'll look just as aesthetically pleasing. Hope you figure it out. Peace and blessings.

@@blacksand357 its an Alberg 37, and older design that is much narrower than todays boats of that size. If I was living aboard, I think 45ft on a modern design with all the bells and whistles (watermaker, heat, AC, etc) would work, but it's still going to be more a lot more complex than a house.

I struggle with this balance too. Been nomadic for a few years but I'm also super organized and don't do well with chaos or being overly busy. I love when everything's in its place, tidy, organized, some type of routine, waking up and being able to totally wing it, not having to plan out every day, where to stay etc. But on the flip side I get lazy, complacent, restless if I'm still for too long in the same city, same house, with the same routine day in and day out. It's such a mental and physical battle sometimes 😭

You said it best when you said “the decision doesn’t need to be final”. We probably all get older and grow and choose to move the fulcrum of balance in our lives, measure the effort against the reward. There is no magic position to where that fulcrum should be, to what connections return the most satisfying rewards, to what our contribution in life should be. You are wise beyond your years. @@travissmith9488 I agree with you 1,000%. There is nothing better than having a stable roof over your head with a quiet backyard being a sanctuary. Doesnt matter whether it is a townhouse, a house, whether a person is renting or buying. Just saying this to say I have always been intrigued with van life, but I could NEVER get used to having to "find" a place to park and sleep every night. Could never get used to the requirement to drive so much, could never get used to having to make constant decisions all day about how I can "make this work" or "make that work." Ughhh....it would be mentally draining and I like my peace. It would cause me anxiety - that my body and my mind does not need. I like peace in my life and living here in my house...I have that.

I can totally relate to where you’re coming from. The best way to live is have a permanent home and a vehicle to venture out from time to time; otherwise you get burned out! It makes the adventure have so much more meaning, and I can always look back at my photos which sparks past memories. 🖖

I travel a bit, often on my own, after several weeks I want to be back where everything is consistent. You’ve been on the move experiencing so much longer than most of us could manage. That’s an accomplishment. Do whatever next that makes you happy. Travel when it’s right. Post when you are comfortable. Your subscribers will be there.

I left life in the van on the road because of a desire for community (which you mentioned briefly as something one would need to surrender), a desire that I honestly had never felt before. It's been some eight months now of staying put for me, with some traveling here and there by plane to visit friends, and it's still difficult to define what "community" would mean and feel like to me. I've found that settling, too, is a process that comes with challenges and decisions. Best of luck to you as you continue to mull over these questions and experiment with what might feel "more right" for these current and upcoming seasons of your life. Thank you for producing such wonderful stories.

thank you for sharing - that is something I do think about often. The fear of settling down in a place where my community is actually limited to my geographic location- it’s truthfully one of the reasons I haven’t settled on a place just yet
@stevedl321
@stevedl321 Жыл бұрын
I understand that completely. Previously, I had figured that it would be either a place or a person who would draw me to staying still. Neither was the case, and that might be one reason for the dislocation I still feel.

@@ChristianSchaffer Wonderful video. Your creations are always so substantive and a joy to watch. In my life, I've found that community is immensely more about the quality of individuals I create it with, rather than quantity. Some dear friends have moved away in the last year or two due to new opportunities, but that has also interestingly allowed for further deepening of the relationships I have with those that remain physically close by. Geographic distance may horizontally limit community building potential, but it cannot restrict your vertical growth to be entwined with the souls of those in that closer geographic sphere.

I can follow your thoughts so much! I was myself for about 3 years in Australia and the U.S. on the road in a van and had in between also always phases in which I just wanted a washing machine or shower on the spot and have longed for a well-equipped kitchen in which I do not always have to move everything back and forth to get to a certain thing. Back in an apartment I quickly had the feeling of wanting to go back, because I felt so out of place and everyone around me could not understand my feelings. Now after again 3 years in an apartment, I long again for the free van life. I think the one does not exclude the other and you can always go back. btw: love your content and Journey!

Happy New Year Christian! Whatever you choose to do, everything you've learned living on the road will help you. Even if you decide to have a "home base", I doubt you will ever stop travelling the roads for at least part of the year. Well, at least until you are too old to do so. 😁 More of a balance might be a good thing. Even having a house means you will have surprises and things to deal with. Heck, I live in NJ suburbia and we had a racoon get trapped in our garbage can today. The ability to stay calm and deal with things is invaluable, no matter how or where you live. Best of luck in your decision. I also have to say, that cabin on top of the mountain reminded me of a line from the movie Field of Dreams where one of the players asked "Is this Heaven?" I wouldn't want to live there, but what a great place to visit.

So much to love about this video Christian. First, I really appreciated you showing the mundane and challenges of van life. It's not all glorious. But then, wow, the scenery. Loved the drone shots of the small house you hiked to on the ridge showing the mountains all around. So beautiful. And then on your drive back, the pink skies to the massive snowy mountain. Mother Nature at it's best. And I just love that dog. :) Anyway, happy 2023 to you. Looking forward to the next one.

Hi Christian - fascinated in your journey no matter what form it takes. Your narrative has been a huge teaser trailer to the possible house build in a remote spot that you've hinted at previously. Will be interesting to see how you resolve that tension of being on the road and the limitations of the van lifestyle against the dependable logistics of working from a base that might limit your creative buzz but provide fewer van life inconveniences to produce your best art. Just hope you can keep that minimalist vibe (the difference between what you need and what you want is what you can fit in a van) and keep bringing us those pink skies. 😆😆 you're a long way and come far from than shopping mall/folding clothes grind so would love to see you become a home-maker with wheels to travel.

I think no matter what you do or where you go, you'll always be sacrificing something. You can be sacrificing comfort, or it could be adventure and new discoveries. Finding that perfect balance is hard. I've always wanted to do van life, and I'm really happy you shared your thoughts and the hardships you face. I'd have to agree that having a home to come back to once you want comfort sounds like a wonderful balance, especially if you are able and can afford both. Loved your video! :)

Oh my gosh, this video is priceless. LOL, that conversation with employee you, and the constant decisions, chores, changes, issues, problems and joys… I spent my first month on the road and LOVED it, but I had to come home, because, reasons. And that whole first day, I did nothing. It felt so good to just sit still on the deck, and not have to make decisions about anything. There was infinite power, hot water, shower, laundry, toilet, trash, high speed internet, a full fridge and a closet full of clothes… it was magical! Having a home base is good for the soul, go for it. I know a good realtor in Montana if you need a recommendation…😊

Never commented before & also haven’t watched many of your videos yet outside of your guides for how to vanlife etc. type vids. But watching this video I love the creativity, editing & story telling you do that feels uniquely different from other van life/travel channels I’ve watched! Definitely gonna watch more of your content. Your channel amongst others are the fuel that I’m using to hopefully get into van life for the first time ever hopefully this year! This video was nice to see as it shows it isn’t as easy and great as it looks. Which is something I’m hopefully preparing myself for by watching these videos. The decision fatigue is definitely something I’m especially curious to see play out in this life style. Regardless, love the content and looking forward to what’s next!!!

What actually is "vanlife"? Do you have to do it fulltime to be considered a vanlifer? My view is vanlife is way oversold on KZfaq and too many people get sucked in thinking everyday is sunshine and 70 degrees with beautiful views where ever you go. Put music to it and even when your having a terrible day, people still think it's the greatest thing ever. Everyone wants to live in a Hollywood movie I guess. Why can't you have a nice house and van at the same time? I do. Good luck!

Amazingly beautiful! The reflection, the living, the struggle. The growth. You’re feeling growing pains as you flex and stretch and dream with that creative spirit deep within. You are listening to that still small voice. You must. You’ll find that place of balance. And then grow some more and eventually change will come again. And again. The key is to not stop growing. Change is the stimulus to growth. You. Are. An. Inspiration. What you are producing now, as I have followed you as a favorite for many years, is evidence of that growth. Keep doing you, listen to those nudges, your light is touching many of us who need that light. As a teacher I have my summers off to travel and that resets my creative spark and feeds my soul to do another year of mind and energy consuming 24/7 teaching middle school science. So grateful you are producing and sharing your heart in this beautifully creative way. Stay safe in those western storms out there.

Hi Christian, I am always amazed when I watch one of your videos. I have no words to describe what I feel. The atmosphere that emerges from your videos is so incredible. I know, I was too lazy to translate everything into English, but since you speak Italian, maybe you also speak other languages?

You seem very in tune with your heart and it's leading you right where it should. We're here for you, your story, your humanity -- van-life or not. Wishing you the best, excited to see what 2023 has in store for you "The past had been only distorted memories, the future was fabricated and perceived as a hallucination, the present is the truth being seen right before your eyes in an eternal void of nothingness, the real phenomenal mirage, observed at the most pivotal of moments whence ones consciousness is at a still, an imaginary world of fantasy created by elements of inspiration resembles the actuality of everything that is and has been, my reality. A spiral of dreams I will always be stuck in between."

So rooting for you... to find what feels right... and open up. This video was as visually juicy and sustaining as they all are! So many great moments, but I loved the Dog's meander outside the look out and the deer beyond out the window and I think there was a birds reflection in one of the window close~ups from the exterior. But my gahd... the trip you take us on every time... can't put into words how it feels, but sustaining comes to mind... as if just touching what you are experiencing changes my day... and my feeling about living it.

Really enjoyed your story telling in this episode, Christian. I've been watching your vids for a couple years now and this one hit solidly, in the top 5 easily. I do think it was kind of two episodes in one though, as you take a pretty dramatic shift after "part 1" of frustrations, which I loved; your pacing along with your clips illustrated the trials and tribulations so exceedingly well. Keep on living your dream and I along with the rest of your fans will keep rooting for you. Even if your desire shifts said dream to more of a domesticated life, I suspect we'll still be there as long as you want to keep sharing your passion for story telling and exquisite scenes of nature.

I'm still unpacking, literally and figuratively. The highs of being in so many places are definitely evident in the photo library, but the toll that takes in so many ways you've described here is immense. Like you I perform much better from a productivity perspective when I can rely on routine and space, and there's a cost in emotional and physical health as well.
