My soon to be wife is a genuine Hanoian, her family tree goes back dozens of generations! We are 100% moving back there in a few years, so time for me to start learning Vietnamese!

I am a language enthusiast but don't have a connection to Vietnamese (I am at a B2 in Mandarin however, so I've studied an Asian language before), but I am amazed at how challenging the phonology of Vietnamese is! For any westerner who has tried to study Vietnamese, you must be very brave! How long did it take you before you felt comfortable speaking Vietnamese (or understood by a native speaker)?

Practice regularly with a Vietnamese teacher will help. Picking it up without qualified help is hard, though.

Spent 5 years in SE Asia Vietnam doesnt have much of a nightlife but its easily the most beautiful counry Ive ever been to. Ha Long Bay is the most amazing spot I saw there and is a definite recommend though take a buddy along, being solo on a boat with strangers overnight would be awkward. Also most beautiful ladies in the world. Most dont speak english or really down with chatting to a foreigner but are simply jaw dropping. If your a gal the guys apparently are also quite attractive and a lot of the Brit gals I saw traveling with were very into them.

Hi! If you want, you may slow down the speed of the video. Hover your mouse in the center of the playing video and click on the Settings icon, which resembles a gear. In the menu, scroll to find Playback speed and click it. KZfaq gives you eight options for playback speed. 🙂
