I feel the big problem with Young Justice after season 1 is its over ambition. It stopped being about Young Justice and just became DC the show. Also why do they still continue to pump out 26 episodes when they clearly don't have a budget? Condense the seasons and give the audience what they want. Quality > Quanity.

What make the zatanna arc worse is that we haven't properly seen her as part of the story since season 1. So dividing her episode so much with other characters make her return less impactful.
@Wandermidget
@Wandermidget 2 жыл бұрын
Zatanna's arc was probably the one I was most anticipated for, and in the end it ends up being less about Zatanna and more about the magic/cosmos of DC which left me disappointed. And yea, the slideshows are a problem, which isn't entirely Weisman and his team's fault. It's obvious WB gave them a limited budget and they're really stretching it as much as they can. WB has got to give them a higher budget.

Let’s be honest one of the biggest budget savers was the Mars arc because they didn’t have to animate lip movement because telepathy. To me it’s amazing how far they are able to stretch this budget. Young Justice needs a bigger budget, but without a toy line that won’t happen.

@Wandermidget

@@fightingmedialounge519 Of course. Many of the problems with Young Justice have to do with Weisman himself. I stated in the comments of the previous video that Weisman has a tendency to set up characters, events, and plotpoints way in advance. And if the project happens to get canceled, then so be it. It also doesn't help that Weisman himself admitted that he doesn't have an "endgame" planned for Young Justice. He'll just keep making seasons until WB doesn't want them anymore.

I'd say the Artemis arc was the strongest of the three followed by M'gann's and then Zatanna's, Zatanna's arc is the only one I could really consider bad though because while the Martian politics were a bit much there was still some interesting stuff going on with M'gann throughout her arc while Zatanna only gets anything real at the end with the reveal of what she's been doing.
@TheDerek14
@TheDerek14 2 жыл бұрын
Especially since the ending really makes Zatanna look manipulative and self-centered. With the previous lies explored in season 3 & 2, there is the argument that there were lying due to the necessity for the greater good. With Zatanna however, it is entirely personal. She took 3 young adults (guessing their training started when they were teenagers), and pretty much indoctrinated them into her world, all in an attempt to get Nabu to take on a new host, to save her father. She even describes Nabu as a curse, and she fully desires to have those idealistic individuals take on the curse. Yes, they shift it every week, but the fact remains, she only took on apprentices to save her father, and lied. Doesn't matter that she was trying to save her father, she manipulated the situation to her advantaged, and almost destroyed the world in the proccess.

@TheDerek14

@@mikemorro140 I wouldn't really consider that morally gray though. That is straight up manipulation for selfish reasons. Batman & CO. manipulated the Outsiders, and other heroes, in order to investigate the Light behind the scenes, and couldn't afford to get caught. Similar to how Nightwing had to keep it secret that Kaaldor was a double agent due to needing to know who the Light was working with. All are morally ambiguous due their actions of lying for the greater good, but with Zatanna there was no greater good. What she did was for entirely personal reasons, and if she had let them know before hand about the deal with Fate, I'm unsure of whether or not they would have agreed to take on the curse of being Dr. Fate.

@@mikemorro140 While I like morally grey characters, we desperately needed more time to deal with this reveal than the last 5 minutes of the 5 episode arc. They wasted Zatanna. In her own arc. You would think the writers would devote an arc to one of the most underutilised characters in the show but no! They rather devote time to revealing more of the backstory of Vandel (which to be fair was good), three magic novices I do not care about, and a stupid magic school bus subplot. The Zatanna, Dr Fate & Klarion vs lords of chaos arc was very underwhelming, the animation and magic fights were quite dull, save for a few moments like when Khalid split child up like an anatomy chart, but those were the exception, not the rule. I love Klarion but a lot of his jokes didn’t land very well with me and the animation is way too stiff, they’re using *alot* of shortcuts that should, in theory have been saving the budget for some great fight scenes…that aren’t there. one thing i have a love hate relationship with is the cast size. The feeling of an entire unexplored universe of younger DC characters to focus on. My favorite thing about season one was that i loved each member of the core group, and seing a bunch of obscue characters id never heard of was always fun. As it went on, the focus could go to any new charater and they could be interesting, best examples are Jaime's arc and Savage's small moments. In season 3 though, this went down as some characters i just didn't care about, and while youu can blame it on an expanding cast, I'd chalk it up to not having a few standouts, as they tried to do things with everyone when they didn't have the time or investment for it. I feel like the character focus in Phantoms properly takes advantage of that expansive cast so that we can flip to any character with pre-established drama and dive into it. That I think is why Zatanna's arc didn't work whie the others got by despite the flaws. The trials for quick character building put the focus on them when Khalid and Tracy would've been fine as tagalongs. Ultimately we'll see where it all goes

What made season 1 so great was the slow integration of characters which gave ample amount of time into character development and natural storytelling. Season 2 messed up with their time skip. Instead of focusing on the main characters and what they were doing this whole time, they chose to focus primarily on a new cast, with a new threat in a new world. There were so many new characters and plot developments being shoved at once that it was hard to tell what was going on at times. (And yes I understand certain plot points like Megann and Connors relationship or Artemis and Wallys relationship being explored here and there, albeit in small glimpses) Season 3 was just.... ugh. A boring story pacing nightmare. Most of which felt like filler which tried to fix season 2s whole "too many plot points". They tried to fix it by focusing on a handful of new characters (again instead of focusing on the main cast like we WANTED) that weren't well written or interesting in the slightest. At this point I forgot that aqualad even existed apart from them just shoving him in random scenes. This and the fact that they retconned the speed force like it just didn't exist in this universe and that wally just died by tapping into it rather than spending this season bringing him back was a joke. I think season 4 is doing well going back to its roots and we're finally getting some story progression for the *main* cast but damn, I feel like after all this time I forgot about most of the original characters story. I completely forgot about the whole Zatana/Zatara thing that i had no idea what was going on in their arc. I can't help but wonder how the show wouldve been if they never time jumped the first time.

The slideshow segments are almost definitely a combination of budgetary restrictions and difficulties with animation during COVID, and since they're used for flashbacks I *was* fine with it until the Vandal Savage vs. Order/Chaos debate which should've been properly animated as it was in the present. I also agree Zatanna became lost in her own arc and the speed running of the prodigies traumas felt cheap, except for Mary's which I felt I got enough of an understanding as well as the fact she was still struggling with said conflict in the present (and beyond) made that feel more concrete. I'm confused, did they insinuate Zatanna created this whole situation to free her father? If so, she's morally culpable for all the death, destruction, and now enslavement of these groomed kids to Nabu and Fate. Side note: as someone struggling with depression, Beast Boys arc has been on point, I just hope they don't fall hard on the sleeping pills thing and just let a mofo be depressed because of trauma

So basically no she didn't create it but the Chaos Lords reacted to her even contimplating the idea of multiple Dr.Fates (and thus Nabu consistently having bodies that are actually healthy and refreshed and being more powerful) on top of how they had already lost faith in Klarion by sending in Child, but they way overshot on account of Child being it seems way crazier and more bloodthirsty than most of them. So no she didn't create the situation and I wouldn't say "cosmic forces react to an idea" can really be blamed on her too much as why the hell would she even be considering "man what would these vauge entities be thinking about this?" She certainly took ADVANTAGE of the situation to have her students impress Nabu so he'd agree to the idea though to expidite her plan, hence why she basically let them do most of hte fighting and mostly did defensive spells when he was around.

She was training them so that they could do the whole "multiple Fates" thing, and this event with Child and Klarion just presented the opportunity for her to present the idea to Nabu, if only because it was a super tough mission and they managed to miraculously survive. She trained them in the first place so that she could free her father from Nabu's control and present good hosts for Nabu to inhabit.

I actually love vendal's backstory and how they presented it with "low budget animation" In my opinion it makes them feel like they are legends which the details are not fully right and that tides back to vendal's wishes that his story will be recorded in addition I love the actual lore and it gives so many answers to the world and the Returning line of "why are you telling me what I already know" In the arc in general is one of the most clever things they could come up with I mean the arc the backstories are told like stories which are told to those how actually were in it or already know because everytime they try to show that they are more then the eye can see and that they can learn from there own story.

It‘s amazing how dark the Zatanna arc actually is for her character- the show implies she groomed a bunch of kids to enslave themselves to Fate on a temp basis for a week at a time and pursued this while the world was in the process of being blown up. Further she is so bad at mentoring, she doesn‘t even reprimand Mary when she does shady shit and then just pulls the rug out from under her. Not to mention that Mary Marvel‘s fall to darkness needed its own arc, since a decent adaptation of that story has to tread carefully to not become the caricature of „token hero becomes evil and corrupted by power“ that the first time the comics did this was - which of course it didn‘t. So now it‘s „look, she‘s just kinda fascist because she feels inadequate and then her mentor was mean to her, so now she‘ll become an apocalypse fury. Now, both Zatanna being aweful and Mary turning evil can be good - but they needed way more time to linger and explore the character development of each. This way we‘re left basically stunned by this and the show just skips past it.

The students aren't kids. They are all at least college-age, at the youngest. Also, she didn't groom them for anything. She didn't have the idea until the first episode of her arc, which ended up summoning Child to Earth. She tried to encourage them and showcase them in front of Dr. Fate to sell him easier on the idea, but her attempts to teach them magic was genuine. And when she did reveal her idea, she gave them the choice to do it. She never forced them. So, what she did was questionable, but she's nowhere as manipulative and devious as people painted her to be.

I thought that they were gonna have her give the exposition for the last episode of the arc to tell her story and for it all to come together but they didn’t. I said this before and I’ll say it again. They focus TOO MUCH on world building. I’m glad they actually calmed it down this season but common sense should have told them that since Zatanna didn’t get as much character development outside of the first season then they needed to focus on her character more and not less. If you ask me the biggest missed oppertuntiy so far was Child herself. Beyond her simple but effective desgin, she just lacked anything interesting to her. Beyond 'Super powerful , evil magic girl'. She was fun in that she kinda treated evrything like it was a game to her sure. And it was nice to see when she lost the other lords of chaos backing that she threw a temper tantrum and isn't that diffrent to Klarion. But honestly, the biggest waste is that she had a TON of potential to be more than just 'Causes Chaos by destroying stuff'. Chaos is not inheirtly evil, just as Order is not by default good. She could of been used to showcase this perfectly. Her big point against Klarion was that he was an emobeyment/lord of Chaos...yet he was serving order basically. He was working with hte light. ORGINIZED Crime. Meaning he was failing utterly at being well. Chaotic. it would of been very interesting if, in responce to that, she wanted to destroy the LIght to fix Klarions screw up and decides to take the fight to the light directly and did a huge status quo shift in that the light is being attacked head on now by her and they need to leagues help. OR she decided to work WITH the league or team or the like to try to take down the Light. As Chaos is not inhertitly evil and she could want to get rid of the light but not just do random acts of Evil. Prefering a more 'foucused' version of Chaos in cotrast to Klarions wild and random form of it. They even explored a bit of this early on, with how she was more concentrated and foucused in how she fougth than he was.

Did you think we somehow didn't notice that yet? Why are you wasting time with this?" M'gann/Conner's arc was pretty solid. Yes, the animation suffered a little … I don't know what kind of shoestring budget they had to make things happen in, but it definitely shows in going out of their way to have everyone use telepathy… In Artemis's arc, the dark fight was again about saving dollars on animation … but it was done really cleverly. Too many characters, too little time with them. Who are these 3? Who's this guy? Oh, "The Stranger" I guess. OK, why are you here all the sudden? Cut away to the other plot.

It’s funny, a lot of people hated the Miss Martian arc (I loved it). As far as M’Gann having her depression somewhat resolved too quickly, that I’m glad for as we saw a different development each time we saw her. I wouldn’t want to sit around watching her mope around and do nothing several episodes straight (Beast Boy).

Agree with basically everything wow, and from what I've seen, I think the idea of zatanna's arc being the weakest is pretty agreed upon in the community. It's pretty clear that the team behind young justice is just kinda bad at managing and naturally growing their world out. Which is unfortunate cuz I really do like some of their world building, such as Atlantic being founded by vandal and that apparently all metahumans are offsprings of vandal. But they clearly do know what they are doing when they restrict themselves, showed by both season one and the first two arc of this season being the strongest the series has been. Let's just hope the team can rein themselves back in with the rest of the season, but I have a feeling we will be getting some lore dumps soon with the legion of superheros being more important in the later half of the season.

I'm not sure how much you know about the character but, Lady Shiva isn't a person you can simply *“arrest"* (she'd probably kill the entire precinct of wherever she'd be dropped to make an example of them while simultaneously taunting and embarrassing the heroes who thought such a foolish thing would actually work, their foolishness being paid for dearly with the life's of the police. And then she'd just disappear without a trace). Ninja cults are not to be taken lightly, they don't play by our own laws and the heroes can't just keep her detained themselves, since they DO actually care about our own laws, unless they stand in the way of protecting the whole of humanity somehow.

When I first watched it, I thought season 3 was okay, definitely not as good as the s01 and probably a bit worse than s02. But in preparation for season 4 I rewatched it and honestly, I loved it. I really can't remember what I thought was lacking the first time. Now I think it's different from s01, but once I accepted that, I have really grown to appreciate it to the same degree as s01. I think a feature of the show that leads to disappointment is just how many characters there are vs who is getting the focus at any one time. So I think people including myself at the time were disappointed that so much of s03 was Halo and Brion when there were so many other characters we had a greater investment in that we were not seeing. But on reflection, I really like Halo, Brion, Forager, etc., and funny enough I am sad we haven't gotten more of them in s04. So I have come to the conclusion that the only problem with Young Justice as a whole is that there are not 4 million episodes that I can watch right now, which would solve the above-discribed issue with the show.

This show is always gonna be weird to some people in that it can change it's story structure so drastically between seasons it'll feel like a completely different show to them (honestly the only time this DIDN'T happen was S2-S3 which both have a fairly similar structure IE, you have an A. Plot with new villains that are super tied into a few members of the new cast, those members get WAAAYYY more focus than everyone else introduced, then you have B and C plots around older characters but basically ultimately the main narrative decided character focus) S1 was the most episodic but most episodes built at least a bit towards it's climax while S4 is arc based and so far all 3 arcs have been pretty damn different though there's the throughline of Conner and well for the first half his death and presumably for the second how the hell their gonna help him. I really miss Brion and Tara, thought what they did with the Markovs in S3 was really creative and setup some really interesting avenues and I wish we checked up on that more. Halo's probably gonna be on the sidelines till Apokolips and New Genesis come back into full focus id guess.

I enjoy the arc format but I hate how much bouncing back and forth between characters is done in the episode as it ruins the pacing. It wasn't bad when it on Artemis, but once we got to Zatanna and we kept revisiting Beast Boy and getting narrated backstory it all just felt so drawn out. I feel like all the Phantom Stranger/Vandal/Nabu stuff could've been it's own arc it took away from Zatannas arc which I was looking forward to and it fell flat. The crisis event that occurred was so serious Stranger was there but it all felt so inconsequential and resolved easily in a way they should've known since the beginning (being that Flaw has a flaw and you need to kill the anchor).

Weird, I loved the Zatanna arc. The more magic side of DC had never clicked for me before, but this was the first time where it got me really interested. The voice over bits gave me such a different idea for a lot of the characters, their dynamics, and how everything pieces together. It added a level of cohesion I'm not used to seeing in DC. I do agree that the presentation of that was extremely cheap though. I also completely agree with you about Zatanna's pupils. With how the arc resolved, I see why there needed to be 3 people, but I spent basically the whole time wondering who they were.

Nightwing's Arc: Should focus on Jason Todd and Nightwing's reunion with Jason (Red Hooded Ninja) 3. Final Episodes: The remaining episodes should focus on saving Connor and meeting with the Legion of Superheroes (Why Superboy is important)

There are quite a few plotholes all over the place tbh... like, how they don't know where Mars is... somehow... the "why we can't go there" excuses get really thin tbh. One part I was really disappointed with, was how it seemed like'd we'd basically get a "therapy session" each episode. But... that didn't happen. We got like, 2 so far. Plus, I do find it kinda ironic how one of the "main" characters in the lineup, basically doesn't even show up for the entire first half of the show xP There's A LOT of inconsistency though. Also: I found it lowkey hilariously bad how they showed a monument to Kid Flash and Superboy. But... ignored *everyone* else. Like... you'd think there'd at least be *something* there at the sides, or implied... To me, one of the biggest derps in this show: Is how it KEEPS failing in trying to be "woke", is the best I can phrase it. Like: They have Halo come out as nonbinary. The very next scene: EVERYONE ignores it. And it's ignored the rest of the show. They have a character explain how to pronounce his name. EVERYONE ignores it. And this show has had things like this, over and over. It comes off as very tone deaf. That said: I do like how they handled Terra. They managed to keep her "Terra" without the usual... "supergirl treatment" to show a character aged. Plus: They are showing her hair. Which is a great reference to the abuse story they subtexted in the last season. ... I just hope they don't shart the whole thing by pulling the Black Adam arc... That said: I think they massively ruined Oracle and Orphans backstories. It became... SUPER lame. And yeah, the school bus was a funny gag. But... the rest of the whole thing was just so... imo: Badly written and forced. Like you said with the "Can't kill her mom". It's just... kinda forced plot con. I did like the lizard. But yeah... *nothing* paid off with the Chaos vs Order arc tbh. They go on and on about how there's "balance". Yet, we find out Order fiddled their thumbs for millennia while Chaos roamed free? And they REFUSE to intervene direction, instead enforce slavery? Like... Order comes off as real Richards. Not even remotely "good" tbh. And then we got Chaos... who, are just "destruction". NOTHING else. I was hoping we'd get some interesting moral conflict or... *something*. Like: Child teaming up with the Outsiders, since the Outsiders are "chaos" for not following rules. And she tries to destroy the Light, since the Light is Order. AND: What "corrupted" the prior avatar of Chaos. Or, you know: Doing some actual chaos. Not just... try to destroy the ENTIRE planet... And WHY would Savage need to tell Order and Chaos, that: If Chaos destroys the universe... there can no longer be any chaos? Atop that: How is Order even remaining when Chaos is like, x10 stronger? Plus: I was a bit "eh" on how Child seemed to just be their new "Halo" to show off gore. And... it was partially true. But, they at least did *something* to Klarion. So it wasn't as one sided. They seem to have tried to balance their gore out a bit. But, still are VERY derp with it. The arc was overall just, *very* messy. And tried to pull stuff it didn't earn. ... atop having some VERY shoehorned messages in there... BB has been one of the biggest dumbs so far in the show. Like: You're telling us that he's been like that for MONTHS. And... no-one cares? There's just... A LOT of fiddling with and ignoring established rules of the universe. (Like Fate's tower.) All seemingly just... "because". Maybe they will touch on the backstory and stuff but like... so far: They established stuff. Directly contradict and conflict with said stuff.. and has characters do purely idiotic things to excuse plot arcs that have no reason to happen to begin with, really. I'm just really confused where it is going...

And then fly down from there. 3: While actually risky: They could teleport to the *exact* location of the last teleporter. While I think the arc focused approach is a vast improvement from S3 (I also enjoyed the first two quite a bit), I also wonder about the overarching plot of the show. It's particularly frustrating because the shows creators have said that they didn't write this season with any conclusion in mind and they just hope the show keeps on going. That's nice and all, but seems like it's an excuse to keep treading water while the overall quality still hasn't reached the heights of the first two seasons. So now if it gets cancelled (which I have a lurking feeling it might) we won't even have a proper conclusion despite the fact that they were giving TWO FULL SEASONS after their initial cancellation to leave their fans with some sort of satisfactory conclusion.

I stopped caring for Young Justice years ago. Season 1 was great, just a bunch of teenagers wanting to prove themselves worthy of being called heroes while learning to deal with challenges they may not ready to fight against and figuring out how to work as a team of equally hot-headed and emotional kids with heavy burdens on their shoulders. After season 2 started with a time skip and nearly everything was different, I started feeling disconnected from the show. Season 3 only made things worse by jumping the shark. I couldn't remember who the characters were without their costumes (and most of them didn't wear costumes in that season), couldn't figure out who was the clone and who wasn't, stopped caring for relationships, and the supposedly emotional moments didn't do jack for me. Now that I see your view on season 4, I see no reason to get back to the series. The first half may have been good, but it still has the same issues season 3 was plagued with, and at this point I have been disconnected from the series for so long, I just don't care anymore. Maybe the reason of focus switch on Zatanna arc was Zatanna? Come to think about it: since her late enough appearance in season 1 Zatanna was a pretty good character: she had her interests, she was great addition to the team (now they had proper magician), she had a good drama with her dad and etc. Then in season 2 they completely dropped her development by making her JL member and used as side character. However, in season 3 they attempted to "uplift" her from overloaded stuck of characters they already had. As everything in season 3 it was "normal" or meh at best. And now, in season 4, they (creators crew) finally came back to her fully. And what do we find? Pretty much a mess! Zatanna on moment of season 4 have the same issues she had in season 1 (also lost somewhat of a "charm" she had then), but on top of that she now has some (in my opinion) questionable decisions made like participating in treaking Artemis to "help" her let Wally go. Now we can add to that tricking her students in being Nabu's host and forsakening Mary (because she hadn't cared enough about her from the start, I suppose). Now that she saved her father, what can we say about her? What there's of Zatanna beside daddy issues?

I think Young Justice is a show that gets worse with every season. Not that I think it's bad. I still enjoy Young Justice but there is a noticeable quality drop with each season. I thought season 3 was ok. I really like the first 2 arcs of season 4 and it seemed like this season would actually be better then season 3 instead of continuing the pattern of getting worse. But then the Zatanna arc happened. The only good part about it was Child. I find them to be an entertaining villain but the rest of the arc is a mess. Despite us calling it the Zatanna arc, it feels like she hardly developed or got any focus because we had to introduce so many new characters and jump back between Vandal and the aftermath of the Mars arc. I feel like the only thing I learned about Zatanna in this arc is that she is a bad teacher/mentor. This arc alone doesn't ruin the whole season though. I hope the rest of the season's quality is more similar to the first 2 arcs which I personally really liked. I hope we have a story with the characters from season 3 at some point instead of dropping them like we did with the new team from season 2 in season 3.
