Pro tip pre cut, put ur blade down the shaft so u don’t cause any difficulties trying to put it on after the cut if so just sand the end of shaft

Is it ok to just leave the longer shaft if it isn’t hitting anything?

Cut after mounting the blade. If you bur the shaft the blade will not go on. Eliminates extra work.

Personally I would rather cut it to length and dress it down o the end of shaft , that way it will come off easier later

I was about to say the same thing. Chances are your never going to replace the motor again. If you do just get a new blade.

Ima do this for after market evap motors too. I usually just mark a reference point to be safe but this sounds like a better solution plus I keep a grinder in the van

I had to do one today, you should totally hack the extra length off all those threads.

Just a tip. Put the blade on first before u cut. It will sometimes mushroom and will make it impossible to put blade on. U can solve this with a file but either way works.

I use an angle grinder. I can cut it, then use it to clean up the edges so the blade slides on smoothly

Great tip as always Josh!! In a pinch I have used a rolling tubing cutter to score the shaft and then kinda snap it off. It does dull the wheel pretty quickly tho.

You can also add spacers and longer screws to where the top grill mounts to the unit which will raise the shaft up off of the compressor.

Zip disc on a M18 grinder, cuts like butter and you can ease the edge of the shaft where you cut it. I always cut them to length.

Please put your reversing leads on the inside of the unit! The last thing you want is a curious child playing with those High. Voltage wires!

I usually turned the motor on and let it cut off it’s own shaft with a sawzall blade held still

Up the blade on where u need it. Grab ur sawza and cut some slack off. If u cut it first the blade might now go on.

He said mark the fan blade first. You won’t have room to cut it if blade is on. Plus you may damage the blade. You file the edges down then

It’s a total waste of time to do it before putting the fan blade on. If you can’t do it and not damage the fan blade, find another job. I’ve done thousands and thousands myself. It is absolutely doable with the fan blade on. And no one, I mean no one uses a hacksaw. If you don’t have power tools, find another job.

Well... Im one that uses a hacksaw ✋🏼. Ive always found it easier. So is your method the only way? I guess since I've only done thousands and you've done thousands and thousands, anyone that does it differently should start looking for another job. I've never said my way is the only way. Just giving advice with what has worked for me. This is one of the problems with this industry. Experienced technicians being hostile to someone learning or trying to share what's worked for them. Blade on, Blade off, both work fine. Hacksaw, sawzall, both of those work as well.

The main tip is omitted, and that is to never cut the shaft and then put the fan blade on afterwards. And by the way, it’s not a fan blade. It’s a propeller with multiple blades. But, no one calls it a propeller. Anyway, if you don’t own power tools, buy some. No one uses a hacksaw unless they travel back in time to the 1980s before cordless tools.

You can always take a 1in drill bit and drill in the top of the compressor where the shaft hit so the shaft sits inside the compressor.. Helps the compressor shaft spin faster as well 🤣🤣🤣
